A WOUU TO Ol'K NEIGHBORS.
We are very sorry that the journals in
our growing promising and wide-awake
young neighbors to the cast and west of lis
such as Fort Worth Terrell and others are
so studiously attempting to create tho be-
lief that tho Herald and Dallas do not re-
joice in their prosperity and do not want
to see them assume tlio dimensions and Im-
portance of thriving und populous cities.
Tlicy do us gross injustice fur wo have for
them nothing but the kindliest of lecliiigs
and wisli for tliem nothing but the brightest
of futures. I'lidcr such circumstances we
regretted to notice the following remarks
by tlio Terrell War : "The town of Kauf
man will never do any good or. in any wise
bo in tlio way ofUullas but Terrell will be
come u city when she getB tho Central
branch and be 11s troublesome a rivul to us
0(1 the cast lis Fort Worth is oil tlio west."
Dallas Ilr.uii.i). 'The above paragraph
liny never havo appeared In the columns of
tlio Jlr.u.w.ii but that is just
what it means by studiously ignoring
Terrell and ns studiously bringing Kiuil-
nuin so prominently before tin) public in
connection with tlio Central llrancli. Tlio
course of tho llr.u u.ncan be interpreted in
no other way and wo should think that It
was getting high time for the citizens of
Kaufman to kick against the iujudicioos-
ness of their friend Its jealousy of Terrell
has caused the 1Ikkai.ii to over do the
thing to such 1111 extent that the biggest
fool in all Texas c an plainly sec the rutin; of
itscour.se and tho result will be an injury
to Kaufman." The Star is correct in its
statement that 110 such paragraph us tlio
one attributed to us ever appeared in our
columns and wo must inform our friend of
the Ktar that wo never dreamed of "stu-
diously ignoring" any one town or ".stu-
diously bringing forward" nny oilier in all
north Texas. Wo havo always
regarded Terrell us one of the
most prosperous go-ahead attractive und
promising towns in our sect ion of
the stato and the Star us one
ol the newsiest most pushing read-
able iiinl ubly conducted papers in any
of the towns surrounding Dallas and will
ever he rejoiced at the growth and continu-
ing tiuvess ol cither. There am several
splendid little cit'es ill close proximity to
Dallas with bright futures before them
witli about equal ehanees hi the race
and the 11 1 11 1 if only trusts I lint their
loudest expectations may be realized. Wo
recognize the tin t that whatever will build
up Terrell Cleburne Wuxalinchic Mo-
Kinney Fort Worth and other towns
perhaps will redound to the ultimate
pre. lit nt Dallas. Wo have long sinee
learned the lesson that nothing wits ever
gained by pulling down a neighbor or fret-
ting oneself to death over Hie success of a
rival. A town like an individual must
succeed only through its own individual
merits und advantages and though these
are slowly recognized often they never fail
of making themselves known at lust. It
is sn witli a newspaper success conies only
from a dignified and impartial bearing and
a poor paper never yet grew into a good
one hy abuse or from the failure of
a rival. Such reflections us tliee
tlio dictates indeed of common bus-
iness sense have always led us to guard as
best wo could the interests and hope for
the future of all North Texas and the press
of our section. As neighboring towns forge
ahead so must Dallas il site would keep in
the van and us journalism around us im-
proves so must the IIkiim.h if she would
continue to lead. Kvcrytblng at lust de-
pends upon merit and personal effort and
jealousies spite ungenerous rivalry loss of
dignity abuse or whatever elso Is a depart-
ure from the common suggestions of busi-
ness und reason only operate as weights
in the race of life. And so In the
growth of Terrell and all tho towns
within a radius of one hundred miles from
Dallas wo ran see nothing but Increasing
benefit to our section and as a consequence
ol hone ami promise to Dallas. If Terrell
bus superior advantages to Kaufman they
will ultimately carry her abe.ul und noth-
ing we might say could prevent it and vice
versa. And if Fort Worth has greater at-
tractions than Terrell they too will In
time win recognition and reap the legit!-
m ite and merited reward. Hut nil must

would first reach the goal. Whatever their
future the UiiiM.ii und Dallas have for
them all only the kindest wishes and wonts
ol cheer.
