1).. astronomer of the Canadian limine de-
partment under date of Ottawa. November
'-'": On the 2X1 ot September I announced
through the Canadian press that a great
storm would occur in March next; that
it would be felt in the Gulf of Mexico on
the niu'lit of the Oth and being retlected by
the Itocky Mountains would cross this
meridian trom the west at noon on Sunday
March 11 183. No vessel whatever her
dimensions will be safe out of harbor
and none of small tonnage can survive
the tidal wave and fury of this temp st. As
it will blow from southeast the plauctary
force will be sufficient to submerge the
lands on the American coast especially
those bordering on the gulf of Mexico und
washed by the Gulf Stream while the air
currents tor several hundred miles aloug
the cast side of the Itocky Mountain range
owing to the great atmospheric
pressure in these regions will
spread universal destruction. The New
Kugland states will also stiller severely
from wind and lloo.ls. No point outside of
harbor in the area of the Atlantic es-
pecially north of the equator will bo a
place of satefy fur this will be pre-emi-ni
ntly the greatest storm that has visited
this country since the days of your illustri-
ous lirst president. In view of this event
therefore I take the great liberty of repre-
senting to your excellency the advisabil-
ity of ordering all I'nited Slates ships into
safe harbor not later than the 6th ol March
until this storm be parsed.
