the lllack Canyon of the litinniaon. For a
long distance the w alls of syenite rise to the
Mupendous height of .'!00i) feet iiiul for

the survey is successful and 'lie Denver it

line when completed will cost about $60-

$2.1000.000 leaving lor tho company but
$15000000 which 7000000 ncres of their

One of the most singular features of east-
bound trullic the last four months has
been the immense shipments from Missouri
and Kansas of apples. Train-loads have
been shipped Irom Missouri to iNow lorK.
Over 1000 car-loads went east over the
Vaiulalitt nnd lully that ntimii.'r ovpr tho

loads went to Indianapolis. They
are shipped lrom points on the
Missouri I'aeilioantl the Atchison Topeka
Santo Fe in bulk to New York nt a cost
ot about 30 cents per bushel and to Indi-
anapolis at a cost of only 1" cents per
bushel. Four hundred anil fifty to ftoo
bushels aro loaded in a car. The mild
weather of a few days past has largely in-
creased the shipments. A general freight

In his recent inaugural uddress as presi-
dent ol the Institution ol F.neineers and
Shipbuilders in Scot land Mr. J. Held gavo
some interesting notes on locomotives. The
llrst engines of the old tliirnklrk & Glasgow
railway which was opened about the year
182!) weighed from 8 to 0 tons They had
11-inch cvllnders and wheels of cost iron 4
feet in diameter with a workluR pressure in
tho boiler of 60 pounds per square Inch.
Tho Uarn kirk engine used to tuko a train of
three carriages weighing 7 tons gross at an
average speed of 10 miles par hour between
Glasgow and Garlsherne. When Hie old
line 8 miles In length was merged Into the
CaiedonlBn railway now comprising a sys-
tem of about 870 inllos the power ol the
engines was greatly increased nnd at this
day there are express passenger engines
worlclotf over tho same Bround havll.g
17-inch ami IB-Inch cylinders and wheels of
7 feet and 8 reel in diameter ana weigning
In workinu order from 35 to 4.1 tons. Those
engines take a gnus load of U0 tons at a
