Tin Chicago Times. In peaking of the
changes taking place iu the money centers
of the country say: Another thing worthy
of not is the fact that outside ol the three
eastern cities of New York Philadelphia
ami llnston there ia an actual increase in
the volume ot exchanges as compared with
last year. The return) show au aggregate
outside of these three cities of tl-sj.&ftil.'AiO
for the week ending April a agaiust $U."v
4;-'J (I7l tor the corresponding week last
year. The giiu ia small it is true but it is
a nam nevertheless against a loss of about
$:I UUU UU0 for the three cities named. If
the eastern city ot llaltimor also were
taken into the calculation the eastern loss
ami the wesUsru gam would be found still
greater. Comparing the week emling April
2S with the preceding week we Bud that
Baltitnoie and l'liiledeluuia lost nearly
$JU0O.iHX) while the oilier cities gained
nearly $1IIXXU"J0."
Tntae tacts seem to Indicate very clearly
that the weaiern cities are growing in rela-
tive importance quite rapidly ami that the
western and southern parts of the country
are becoming lebs and lest dependent uooii
the east tor manufactured articles and for
eign imports. .New lorn sill! stands pre-
eminent as a commercial and financial ecu
ter. with a volume ot exchanges two and a
half times as great as that of alt other clear-
iag-hmiae citus combined. Hut the com
mercial tendency may be iuferred troni the
fact that the proportion was more than
three to one only one yeur ano. New York
will alw.lys be a great city no doubt so
long as the conditions oi our present cmll-xationexi-d;
but while it will increase ab-
solutely in population and wealth it is un-
questionably destined to decline iu relalivo
importance while Chicago is destined to ad-
vance both ab olutely and relatively.

The trip of Jay GouM and party to the

not return to the east until he shall have
made such arrangements with all roads
that can be used as teeders to the South-

within the bounds of reason. When the
