Washington June 15. The 11111 Investi
gating committee met to-day. Coleman
counsel for Muroh called attention to a re
quest heretofore made upon UllPs oflloe for
all papers relating to extra work performed
by Bartlett Robins A Co. upon the New
York postoflice and Intimated that this re
quest had not been complied with Thomas
for Hill replied that couusel bad not spe-
cified what particular papers were required
and the charges were not sufficiently detin
ue or explicit.
Coleman replied that the charges and
specifications were as definite and specific
as would be required in the indictment tu
half of the states ol the uuloo; that an in-
vestigation of his character should open
the doors for the fullest light upon the offi
cial acts of the defendant. Ho would there
fore renew his ren nest and would ask the
committee to make an order on the archi
tect for the production of all papers relat-
ing to extra works performed by Bartlett
liootns A uo. upon me mew xorx post-
otUoe; also copies of all contracts made by
tuem.
After further argument and without rul
ing upon the questlou the committee re-
sumed the examination of Stelnmeth In
connection vfjsh the charges of fraud and
corruption tu tne construction of the Phil
adelphia poatolnce.
Ou the conolutlon of Bteinwlls' testimony
the question arose whether the oommlttes
and deteuse would admit that some axoess
relatively existed In the cost of other pub-
lio buildings erected under Hill or sbonld
tha Drocutlon rereat their proof with ex
pert testimony as to each. Alexander ot
the committee suggested as the same pnn
olnla would extend to all the build
logs It would seem to devolve
on the prosecution to connect Hill
with the fraud charged In this alleged ex-
travaganoe in the erection of the Philadel-
phia building. Ocleman replied that it
might be as bad a principle to steal $50000
aa J'2000000 but the defense might say as
to our building "We admit extravagance
but you bave not connected Hill with any
fraud." The prosecution were able and
proposed to prove that the same extrava-
gance mismanagement or fraud was
shown In connection with all the buildings.
and that the contracts continued to lie
male after the supervising architects
had been repeatedly warned and advised
of their unfairness to the government. A
