Mr. R. M. Weyms the minlDg ex
pert who Is at present in this country
or the purpose of inspecting the
chrome mines in this vlolnity paid
this office visit yesterday and enter-
tained us with exciting stories of the
far west where the reckless oowboy
contributes to the entertainment of
encroaching civilization and where
the murderous Indian doos his level
best to render uneasy the lil'o of the
venturesome settler. Mr. Weyms has
an inuuiateaequainunce with the wild
and lawless region mentioned and is
there widely and familiarly known 11
the Irish lord. In the co-Las ol con-
versation ce related to us ti.0 follow-
ing story of au Indian raid wiuuh took
place in Arizona during the late In-
dian troubles in tnat Territory and to
which he was an eye witness: imr.
ing this outbreak of the Indians the
settlers in the neighborhood of the
White Mountains suffered considera-
blyiromthe frequent ravages of the
WTiite Mountain Indians. Murder and
arson were prevaleut and iiuwlirrania
were ruthlessly mastawea. Wmie
these scenes of horror were beintr
enacted ouo of a Btill moil
gloomy character was beiuu
carried out at Fort Apache. At
sunrwe on a pleasant Sabbath mom-
ing the red devils made the hour
hideous with inU yells and diuohai ue
of musketry. Inspired by a transient
rise in their engage they rode within
200 yards of the )ort and ktpt up an in
oessant tire from their guns doing
however no serious damage. Thov
then rode off in the direotlou of
beveuty-mile Hill where some Mor-
mons were chopping timber for the
government. Here the work of mur-
der was actively taken up. The fiKiit
that eusued must have been a fourtul
and stubborn one as nuariv
loO cartridge shells wore louuu
by the side of one of tuc
Mormons named Pauetson. Two
hundred yards Irom l'attersou wj
found another doad mau-a Mormon
also-and between the dead bodies uh
a weu-beateu trail that had been made
by a dog that had belonged to Patter-
son. The faithful animal had kept
watch over the oodles fighting away
the cayotes and other animals for
nineteen days without food or wator
Whon found by the pack-train which
went to bury the bodies the dog was
in such a weak condition tiial he had
to be laaned im a mule and carried
to the fort where lus
lorlou condition enlisted the
bj mpathies 01 Mrs. General Carr wno
gave him the best attention. He soon
became the pot or the regiment the
Sixth Cavalry and retained his place
until the company was ordered out of
Arizona when he lost his Hind mis-
tress and was transferred to the care
of Messrs. Stewart & Norton post
traders at New Fort tirant where he
can be seen at all times standing guard
over their butcher uiiop.
"It was during this raid that the t?at-
lant Captain Heutig of the Sixth Cav-
alry was killed and so horribly muti-
lated." Ex.
