Men's, women's tenni
successful in H.O.T.C. play
Troy Ci.akkson
Spurts editor
The Texas Wesleyan men's and women's tennis
teams turned in a strong showing at the Heart of Texas
Conference Tournament April 24-26. Wesleyan placed
second in men's singles, women's singles and men's
doubles.
Wesleyan's Deependra Chhabraa started the tourna:
merit with a bye and easily defeated his first opponent
6-1 and 6-3. Sean Reno from Texas Lutheran fell to
Chhabraa in the third round 6-0 and 6-1, setting up a
Ram against Ram semifinal with Glen Hadley.
While Chhabraa won on his side of the bracket
Hadley took care of his St. Mary's opponent 6-3 and 6-
0. The win put Hadley one victory from playing his
teammate for the right to go to the tournament finals, and
after breezing by his third round opponent the match was
set.
The victory belonged to Chhabraa as he shut out
Hadley 6-0 and 6-0.
Chhabraa earned a trip lo the finals but lost the
championship in three games. Chhabraa won the first set
4-6 but fell 6-1 and 6-4 to Texas Lutheran's Orlando
Galvan.
The women's singles tournament also saw a Ram
fall in the finals. Brooke Hodnick took her first round
bye and ran with it. Hodnick defeated Vicki Hannasch
of Schreiner 6-1 and 7-5 in the second round and took
three games to beat St. Edward's Tracy Cannon 6-0, 3-6
and 7-5 to advance to the finals.
St. Mary's Becki Garcia handed Hodnick her only
loss in the tournament 6-3 and 6-3 giving the Rams
another second place finish.
In men's doubles Chhabraa and Hadley teamed up
,to take on the rest of the conference and came close to
winning it all.
After a first round bye, Chhabraa and Hadley
defeated the Texas Lutheran team of Jose Casares and
Carlos Merino in three sets. The Bulldogs won the first
set 1 -6 but the Rams rallied and picked up the next two
sets 6-1 and 6-4. The Lutheran team had a tough first
match thanks to the Rams' Dustin Viktorin and Jon
Novotny who took the Bulldogs to three sets.
Wesleyan defeated their opponents from Schreiner
in three sets 1-6, 6-1 and 6-4. The tough win gained the
duo a berth to the finals. Chhabraa and Hadley could-
n't overcome the powerful team of Jean Noel Said, and
Oscar Gonzales from the University of the Incarnate
Word. The Rams lost 6-4 and 6-1.
Elisha Stanton and Hodnick went the farthest, in
the women's doubles tournament for the Rams. After
beating Schreiner 6-3 and 6-0, the Rams fell in the
quarterfinals to eventual tournament champions Lili
Ramirez and Kristi Rodriguez from Texas Lutheran 6-
4 and 6-4.

were earned. Wesleyan's defense committed three
errors leading to 3 unearned runs in the Rams 4 run loss.

of the season which led to 2 unearned runs in
Wesleyan's 6-5 loss. Starter Justin Vandiver threw 6.2
innings.allowed eight hits and 4 earned runs.

Wesleyan's Lady Rams softball team has reached the regional playoffs for the second year in a row
and have a chance to win the conference title.
Troy Clarkson
Sports editor
• The Lady Rams softball team will continue
their quest for a national championship on May
1 and 2 when they take on the Heart of Texas
second place team St. Edward's University and
they have asked for support from the student
body.
The first two games will begin on Friday at
3 p.m. at Sycamore Park and the last two games
will start at 1 1 a.m. on Saturday in Keller.
Contact the athletic office for directions at ext.
'4210.
"We would love for a bunch of fans to show
up. This probably will be an important series
for us," said senior Sandra Madrid.
The series could decide the conference
championship if Wesleyan does not sweep
■Schreiner on April 28 and 29. Wesleyan had
already beat Schreiner once before but the last
three games were rained out. A sweep would
give the Lady Rams the Heart of Texas
Conference championship outright.
Even if the Rams do sweep Schreiner the
St. Edward's series will determine the Lady
Rams final national ranking which in turn will
determine their regional seed and possibly a
national's birth. Wesleyan is currently ranked
16th in the nation and have clinched a regional
berth for the second year in a row.
"People should come out and watch. It
ought to be a good series we both have good
teams,'' said first baseman Christina Fernandez.
