Carnarvon Wales July 15
The most interesting event ensu-
ing on the coronation is to occur
on July 15 namely the investi-
ture of the young Prince of Wales
amid quaint Welsh surroundings
and at the very birthplace of the
first English Prince of Wales. Ed-
ward son of King Edward 1 and
Queen Eleanor.
Jt Tradition connect d with the an
eient Welsh castle of Carnarvon
where the ceremony is to take
plait says that after Edward the
First's conquest of Wales the
Welshmen refused to obey any
prince appointed by the king as
regent of the principality unless
be was born on ita soil. Queen
Eleanor shortly afterwards gave
birth of a son in the eastleof Car-
narvon and thereupon the King
calling the chiefs of the Welsh na
tion together aakedthera whether
they would obey a prince nomin-
ated by him as he was compelled
to leave the country. They replied
iu the affirmative on condition
that the prince was a Welshman.
Edward thru named his own son
born only a few daya before and
the Welshmen were satisfied.
The prinee was afterward shown
to the nation or as many of them
as could get near enough to see
him. from what is known as
Queen Eleanors gateway.
It is from this gateway of the
castle" which had been prepared
for the purpose that the new
princeof Wales after his investi-
ture today shows himself to his
nahjs ll who are to gather to the
nvtr of 15.000 or 20.000 in this
vicinity.
The king Jud queen with the
young prinee areto travel from
