Ho attended the Chicago Conven-

run roughshod over tho progressives
and ho learned the points. Ho hur-
ried from there to Daltlmore and
found the Chicago machine already
set up and In operation. In the first
skirmish the NcbraBkan fell under
the steam roller but he quickly ral-
lied and fronr that day forward he
manipulated the machine himself.

For several days tho people here
as well as elsewhere have ben wait
ing and listening for reports from
the Democratic National Convention
in session at Ilultlniore and from
day to day the reports of a deadlock
gave people a tired feeling.
It was recognized from the start
that it was war to the knife between
the progressives led by W. J. Bryan
on one side and the conservatives un
der the Influence of Tammany and
the big Interests on the other.
It was a war of giants. HryaVi
served notice that the country would
not stand for tbe nomination of any
but a progressive and therefore
Harmon was seldom mentioned In
tbe conventon.
For awhile Speaker Clark was a-
head In tbe voting but the fact that
Wlllluui R. Hearst was one of the
managers cast suspicion over the
brilliant Mlssourlan. Then when
Murphy Ryan and Belmont and oth
er celebrated magnates showed a
leaning to Clark the Bryan sword
cut keener than ever.
Bryan refused to compromise and
the harder they fought him the
brighter gleamed bis armor.
The papers that came Tuesday
told that Indiana had gone to Wil-
son and Illinois would probably do
the same and soon afternoon on
Tuesday Mr. Yenrgln received a tele
gram from his son Lovlck Yeargln
of th Dallas News which said "Wil-
son nomnated on 46th ballot."
Brynu has planted his beel on the
neck of the Tammany tiger and bas
knocked out tV plutocratic wing of
the party in the forty-sixth round
This rciiulf. Is apt to put. a quietus
on the Roosevelt movement and the
lines will now be drawn between
Taft and the big Interests on one
aide and Wilson and the common
peoplo on tbe other. Of course we
will bear bow the election of Wllfi'm
would brlnK calamity on the country
and iniiuy eastern democrats (so-
culled I will vote for Taft ns they
did for McKlnley but It Is not pro
bable (hut New York can control
(enouch of the progressive country to
offset the states ibat will certainly
go for progressive America. It Is to
be a hard fought campaign between
plutoiracy and the common people.
While ss iH'fore said It may be
exH'cted that many democrats In the
east and souih elsewhere will trans-
fer allegiance to Taft but it Is be-
lieved that vastly morn of the hither-
to Republicans will renounce th old
party and Join forces with progress-
ive denioi nicy and 1 tint Wilson will
lie eleelod by un oerwhe!n'lnn ma-
jority. How Thin?

Pure Ballot or Pel Miiiitf Country
Judge Terrell says tho original
election law that bears his name did
not contain the plurality nomination
nor the pledge to bind a voter In th
primaries to support a corrupt nom-
inee In tho general election. He says
these provisions have been put Into
It by political machinery.
He says thut two years ago Col-
quitt was nominated for governor by
a plurality vote altho' the combined
vote of tho other candidates footed
up CO 000 more than Colquitt hence
he is a minority governor.
He says the law never intended let
fores a voter to pledge himself !
support a corrupt nominee.
In closing bis urltclo Judge Ter-
rell snyR:
This suggests an amendment .to
the law which should require every
campaign orntor who is not a candi-
date himself to purge himself of cor-
rupt motives by on oath to the effect
that he has neither been paid nor
promised nor does he expect nor
will he receive any reward for bis
speech but Is Influenced alone by
what he believes to be public good.
VnlenH we can keep the ballot pure
freedom will perish and the sooner
we realize this the better. The broati
est freedom of speech must be pro-
tected no matter how absurd the
speech may !. but the hired assas-
sin of the election franchise i-niplov-ed
by wealth and depraved spcciil
lllffrcsts must be jiinz.dil.
