TO OBSERVE SAFETY
FIRST DAY AT FAIR
XUtu' Cngtiti Oij Onliilid-Pitil-Jill
Ulkl EiMili Fill illiriiiil.
' Recognising the Importance of the
afety firit movement the Slate Fair
If Texas has designated Monday Oct.
16 as safety first day at the 10)7 ex-
position and special obeervanca of the
day will be arranged. The annual
meeting of tbe Texai Safety Firit or
gsnuation will be hold In Dallas Oct
16 and 16 and tt Is expected that a
large number of the members of this
organisation will be on hand for the
meeting.
President R E. L. Knight has also
. A announced that Friday Oct. It) will
' .ttt aside a Mothers' Congress day
at'tWMOlT fair. In conference with
officers of the congress President
Knight wss told that there would be a
large attendance and that the meeting
of the congress would be made one of
the features jf the fair.
Secretary W. H. Stratton announced
that plans havo been completed for
remodeling the dairy barns where the
dairy cattle are oxhibited and when
the dairy demonstrations are held. The
entrance to the blulding will be rebuilt
to make the front much more attrac-
tive and the Interior will be rear
ranged and improved giving wider
aisles and other conveniences lack of
which has heretofore proved somewhat
of a handicap.
Interest In County Kxhlblta.
Particular interest is being shown
this year in the county exhibits and
Correspondence on file In the secre-
tary's office Indicatea that a greater
number of counties will exhibit than
. aver before. Bountiful crops through-
out practically every section of the
Stat have given almost every county
wonderful product to display and
largo numbers of counties-are taking
advantage of these opportunities.
This coupled with the fact that free
exhibit space Is offered In a com-
' modious well-If eh ted and well-ventl
lated building will undoubtedly make
the county exhibit of great value ac-
cording to Secretary flt rat ton. One
section of West Texaa haa signed
up for mors than twenty counties and
Others are expected to enter
Prealdent Knight is particularly en-
thusiastic slxiut the amusement pro-
gram which haa been arranged for the
11)17 fair.
"We are looking forward to enter
taining between I.Z&O.OOG and 1600.
000 people at the 1017 fair" President
Knight said "and we want to be pre-
pared to satisfy perfectly all of these
folks. Last year it will be rem em-
bered the attendance at the State
1 Fair was a little over a million. With
the bountiful crops of the present sea
aon and these crops bringing higher
prices than was aver before known
there Is going to be a period of great
prosperity throughout Toxas. The
people are going to have more money
than ever before and they are going
to havo a good time on part of the
surplus. This means to my mind
that they are going to flock to the
v State Fair in numbers such as have
never before been dreamed of and that
attendance records of the pent will be
smashed to smithereens."
WAR 8PKCTACI.K IB PROCURED
FOR FAIR.
Advance notices' of "The Wsr of
Nations" to be shown at the State
Fair of Texas Oct. IH to 28 proclaim
this the greatest pyrotechnical display
ever created and one which may es-
tablish a standard for years to come.
"Many thousands of dollars have
' been spent in building the settings for
this gigantic fireworks display" R K.
I: Knight president of the HUle Fair
aaid. "Patrons of the 1917 fair will
witness a spectacle as beautiful as it is
extraordinary.
"No thought Is more uppermost in
the minds of the American people to-
day than the terrible struggle across
the sea and the entranre of the
United Statea into the conflict brims
us to a realization that our sons and
loved ones may soon be in the very
thick of the fighting. With this in
mind the creators of "The Wsf or Na.
tions" has tried to bring to us in
America a portrayal of the spectacu-
lar side of the combat.
"By the immense crowds which at-
tended last year it was clearly demon-
strated that patrons of the fair are
highly In favor of high-class fire-
works. Recognising this we adopted
the time-honored principle of the fair
k av management or looking oniy lor me
"VYN-eat to be procured and In "The War
fot Nations'' it Is our judgment that
we have selected the greatest oispiay
of the kind that haa ever been of-
fered." Intereat In Encampments.
In addition to the nightly display of
fireworks a program of events has
been arranged to be given before the
grand stand each afternoon and night
during the fair. Feature acts from
aome of the largest theatres of the
world and circus numbers that have
pleased millions of jieople have bern
procured to make up a program of
two hours.
The encampment for farm hays
and girls are attracting much atten-
tion from rural districts and arc ex-
pected by those in charge to prove
big drawing card" for the I1M7 expo-
sition. Five hue. I red hoys and J.r.O
girls will be guests of the State Fnir
and In addition to receiving invaluable
educational service will be awarded
priies of material worth
The offer of free exhibit spsce and
Increases In prlies to be awarded are
expected to bring to the 1917 fair the
largest number of county exhibits yet
lilted." Correspondence already on file
with Secretary W. H Stratton indi-
cates that a number of counties wht-h
hsva never yet shown their arodwU

FOOD TRAINING CAMP
AT STATE FAIR URGED
I f. I IiijMTindmllteif Irm.l It
Seminal Ourfag tSi Wsr.
The Stat Fair of Texaa to be held
Oct. 16-2H has tendered its services
to itrcsiUent Wilson as a food train-
ing ramp to assist the Government in
its efforts to increase crop production
and reduce tho waste of food which 1
known to be enormous.
"Our directors offer the services of
our fsir as a food training camp'
wrote President R E. L. Knight of tho
State Fair of Texas in part to Preei-
dent Wilson. "Military training
camps are bein gestabllshed every-
where in the country where men in
Increments of half a milion each
are to be taught the principles of mili-
tary tactics. However as you havo
pointed out many times there Is Just
as much responsibility for tho success-
ful prosecution of the war resting
upon the shoulders of the 100.000.000
persons In private life as there is upon
the men who are called to tho colors
for It is essential that working Ameri-
ca labora hard to furnish our allies
with food and clothing.
"The men whom you are calling into
service are being concentrated in cen-
tral military training camps because
It is found to be much more efficient
to train them in that way than by es-
tahjiiihng camps in every little town
or village. It appeals to tho directors
of our fair that there is just as much
necessity for calling the great rank
and file of food producers and food
users Into central food training camps
for a short course in the more effic-
ient methods of food production and
food conservation. It could hardly he
done now for the Nation is working
hard to rare for the crop already
planted but If wo could hold such a
food training camp during the lull
following the harvest season wonder-
fully efficient instruction in food pro-
duction and conservation could be
given;
To Raise More Ure Stork.
"To make this food training camp
unusually instructive an effort fs be-
ing made to Induct breeders of pure-
bred live stosk to exhibit in larger
numbers of such type and breeds as
will assist the Nation In meeting the
demand for more meat milk butter
cheese leather wool and horse power.
Manufacturers of farm machinery are
being urged to exhibit all of their
latest models and improvements that
farmers may learn how to produce a
maximum crop at a minimum effort.
All the territory tributary to our fair
is being scoured to find superior speci-
mens of the varieties of grain vege-
tables fruits forage crops and corn
best suited to our soil and climate
that encouragement may bo given to
the production of as much of these
crops as possible.
"Since the economical use of food Is
of Just as much importance as the
production of food our woman's de-
partment Is to offer a series of dem-
onstrations and lecturers by food
specialists of national and local repu-
tation to Instruct wives and mothers
how to prepare and conserve food
and check the extravagent waste of
food for which our country fa con-
demned in every other country in the
world. In an effort to enlist the chil-
dren In the cause of food production
the work of children in the schools
and fields is to be exhibited an dem-
onstrations of interest to children are
to be conducted.
"Our board of directors sincerely
trusts that the National Government
mindful of the good which can b done
at such a food training school will
operste to the fullest extent In fur-
nishing lecturers demonstration and
exhibits to assist the fair In accom-
plishing the mission it has under-
taken. There could bo no better way
of reaching the people In this terri-
tory with Government propaganda
for the increased production and con-
servation of food."
