full text of address of welcome
delivered by Mrs. J. T.. Whitmore to
the Scurry-Fisher Institute..
"It is Indeed an enjoyable privl-
lego I hnve this morning of Vepre-
Kcnting the Mothers' Club at thU
good meeting and bidding you wel-
come in Its behalf.
".Mr. Perkins has ashuredly niadJ
you feel that you are gladly receiv-
ed in our city and I know now that
he whs placed on t!:e program for
the same purpose that wo attach a
ta'.l to kite just to make It f?o and
lie baa very kindly left nothing for
me to say but to tell you that the
Mothers' Club welcome you most en-
tlniHlastlcally and bids you God's
speed In this noble work and hopes
that year by yeaV It will be enlarged
enobled and exalted.
"The club feels much honored to
receive a recognition in this the be-
ginning of a groat educational week.
I am glad that tnta organieatlon Is
g.-tinlng recognition from our teach-
ers our county superintendents and
our state educators.
"Only last week Dr. Kllis of thi?
Department of Education of the Uni-
versity of Texas in an address to the
Dallas Forum declaVed that the pub-
lic school system of Texas is in great-
er perils than at any time in his
recollection and It is due to shortage
of teachers brought about by inade-
quate salaries.
"Dr. Ellis made out a strong case
and his solution of the problem is to
raise additional revenue in some
manner thereby increasing the
teachers' salaries generally and to
do this he has asked the 200
Mothers' Clubs in our state to urge
the Governor and legislature to ar-
range lor a state educational rally to
consider the matter. He admits by
this suggestion that our Mothers'
Club is one of the sfrongeht factor
in our educational machine today
and I wish to say to you teachers that
we are going to throw our unstinted
and united efforts into thin rally and
by another school term you will bo
receiving decent salaries.
"Too long has the teacher been
considered a necessary evil and hav-
ing been a teacher myself I speak as
one who knows. In my memory
and I am not old when a stranger
came Into our midst and someone
chanced to ask who he was the an-
swer would come back. "Oh! he is
Just a school teacher' which meant
that he couldn't be of much interest.
However I am glad to say the scenes
are shifting and some of us at least
have come to realize that the tearh-
e is the greatest benefactor of the
human race and every place and
every nook is being opened to them.
"The man that holds in his hand
the throttle that guides the ship of
every nation and may I not say the
civilized world Is just a school
teacher Woortrow Wilson.
"And now that we are learning to
appreciate the teacher her great
work her ability It is high time
for serious thought and action and
tln Mothers' Clubs ait. bent on ar-
ranging their force hi your behalf.
j I believe It will not be biiiIhh l
take the opportunity on this occa-
sion to tell you what a Mothers'
Club 'really is.
"It Is a movement the foundation
of which is the broadest and deepest
and safest we know once we ap-
preciate tho connection between the
home and the school a mothers' club
In every community Is Inevitable
and it Is the honor of the mothers of
tho United States that this vital con-
nection has been placed In the lime
light and Is commanding the vigorous
support of the press and of women in
every progressive community. In
jarent-teacher meetings full free and
friendly discussion establishes tho
relations that ought to exist between
the parent and the teacher. The
mothtV Is made to see her vital op-
portunity In shaping the child's des-
tiny and the teacher is broadened by
learning the conditions In the home.
Consequently the parent and the
teacher form a common understand-
ing each teaching the other soma
vital truth that both ought to know.
Much time Is saved friction is avert-
ed between the teacher and the pupil
and unkind t feeling and complaint
against the teacher is made Impos-
sible. "I'll tell you patrons and teachers
we need to know each other bette'r.
Too long has it been the custom for
panmts to ace their dilJdren in
school and think their duty done.
We get out of a thing only that which
we put into It and the parents need
to throw themselves Into the details
and the interest of the school as well
as their children. If the financial
interests of the patrons of the
schools had 1 their headquarters at
the school buildings under the
teaching foYces the teachers would
be overwhelmed with devout nnd en-
thusiastic patrons. Now that soema
strange doesn't' It for of course we
value our children above money
but we have not been taueht the Im-
portance of co-operating with the
teachers in their training.
"There is In the heart of every
boy and gh'l the raiLVyo of a god
or goddess if the father mother and
teacher will only bring it out. So
my teacher friends as the uudders
of human character the future
hope of our boys and girls and build-
ers of civilisation as tlm salt of
tho earth I m:nln welcome you
heartily und wish you n:i enjoyable
and profitable wu.'k hi our little city.
