"What are you jfoin? to do with it now vou

Mallison never tned of his daughter's interest-
ing impulses which led her into all sorts of ad-
entures. "I'm jroinjr to keep it in my room and maylw;
;t will luitur me jrood luck" was Jane's answer.
That nixht when she went to l-d she placed
the purple dipper ' ledsp aUne her Ixireau
hii1 thought of all the pood iuck she would like
it to brmjr her.
"I wonld like if uu please" she said to it
"an increase i i salary n the next month ar..

tho the purple nhpper anl its dainty toe
ever so slightly as tho promising to see what
it rould do Hlxuit it.
Some weeks went lv without anything btart-
lingly hnpiH-ning and Jane had almost forgotten
what she had expected the slipper to do for
her when one day her emphner asked her if
she would like to try the work in another de-
partment lie said he had tcn watching her
work for some time and found her so ouiek
of derision and notion that he thought he would
like to give her a chance at soiiu'lhing letter.
It hhe found bhe could do the work successfully
they would he glad to iiuiease her salary con-
' biderahly.
That night hhe was triuniplu.nt. "See. she
.uiJ to her family "didn't 1 tell you the purple
blipper would bring me good luck?"
So busy was he fitting into the new jxs.i-
tion that she forgot for a time the other thir.g
she hoped the purple slipper would do for her;
that was. to enable her to go to a business col-
lege to take a course that would fit her for a
belter position and much higher salary in the
future. 1'or Jane wan a business woman to her
finger tips and was not sorry for the financial
disaster at home that had forced her into the
business world as soon us she graduated from
high school. i!ut she realized that she must
have special training along her chosen line of
work which so far she hud not been able to
take.
Just lout a year after she had rescued the
purple dipper fioin the trash luirrel she had
a day's holiday from the office. This she put
to good Use ly clearing out u trunk in the attic
to hunt for some old clothes which she felt sure
could be lipped upait and made over for the
. inter.
As she took out one newspaper wrapped peck-
age utter another her eye was often taught by
the headlines and she aued now and then to
lead a bit. Then as sh unwrapped the very
package he was after her attention wa at-
tracted by this advertisement in the lost and
found column:

That evening she put on her hat and pietty
new coat nnd took her dipper down nnd 1'i ik' d
at it mournfully. Then wrapped it catefuilv in
paper and st ilted out to icstoie it to its owner.
No one could have been iiioip surprised than
was Mr. Tompson at the i el urn of Hip slipper'
after a year had elapsed since its disappearance.
Jane soon found herself seated comfortably
in fiont of a cozy fire whilp she explained to
thp delightful old gentleman just how she h id
happened to have the slipper. Confidence fol-
lowed confidence as they talked. Mr. Tompson
told her that the slipper had belonged to his
wife who had kept it a4 a teminder of an un-
usually happy time in her life. After her death
he had always kept it. too. and had Uen very
unhappy to think that thru the carelessness of
a new housemaid it had been thrown away.
Then Jane told him gayly how her fan.i'.y had
laughed nt her for bringing it home and how
she had kppt it for good luck and how it really
had brought her some. From that she wer.t
on to tell him of her work and before she knew
it she h.id told him alotit her wish to take a
course at a business college.
A few days later Mr. Tompson called on her
mothtr Mid asked permission to pay for the
ripsiied course arid stated his case so nicely
that she was obliged to consent lealiiing what
it would mean to Jane.
And Jane when her employer had crowi.ed
her heppiness by tehing her that a position
wor.ld he fpPii foi her as soon as slip graduated
s;:id again trii.mpi'.i.tly to her family. "There!
Oidn't I tell you that purple slipper would

AMTKNT ROMANS HAD DOLLS
Manv of our little girl friends received dolls
for Christmas presents. It might interest them
to know the history of the doll which dates
back to the days of the ancients.
There is a pretty leg-end to the effect that
dolls were first recognized in the branches of
the tiees of the Harden of F.den. The earl. est
authentic records however seem to go back to
the days of the Unmans when they made
tpiaint. sphinx-like jointed dolls from ivory-
patterns which modem dollmakeis have since
copied.
That the Roman children had their dolls
which they offered uj to Venus when they
grew older was vouched for on one occasion by
the historian McCaulay.
There is ample evidence that the use of dolls
aj an assistance to the operations of the young
mind dates from the most remote times. Among
the native tri!es of Africa it was the custom
of a married woman to carry a doll with her
until they had a child when the doll was dis-
carded. kings were wont to play w ith dolls ami talk-
ing and walking dolls which even today are
regarded as novelties date back a century. At
a French exhibition held in IH'd dolls which
could say "Papa" and Mamma" were exhibited
and three years later dolls which could walk
were shown in the shops. It was about the
same time that dolls added to their many ac-
complishments the power to open and close
their eyes.
