Canninf Club Girl Writ
About Har Work.
On a beautiful fternon one day
lust spring our school at Monroe was
! visited by Miss Milie M. Mnlsey of
'Lubbock; nd she talked to the school
I about the canning club. Her talk
nounded so interesting that 1 decided
to Join the canning club for I wished
I to learn sewing and canning. I se-
lected 1-10 acre in the renter of my
mother's garden because it was easier
ito irrigate as it lies south of the pool
'sloping to the Southeast. The fcoil is
j chocolate sand and I planted it in
jtomatoe only. The soil was in good
'condition after the snow last winter
I so I had it harrowed and laid off and
j I planted my tomato seed in the
! drills. On March 7th I had two loads
j of barnyard and henhouse fertiliier
I scattered over my my ground. Pret
ty soon my plants came up and I
thinned them to about three feet
each way then I had them plowed
twice and I hoed them twice and wait-
ed for the tomatoes I pruned them
very little as this soil bakes less if
it is shaded I did not support my
vines with stakes. The worms appear-
ed on my tomato plants about the
'lOth of June. I picked the worms off
several times and I saw no more
worms until the 12th of September
when 1 found a few more.
For market I used only the nice
smooth tomatoes using the culls at
home.
One time when Miss Halsey and
Miss ('ruddock met with our club at
Monroe they gave us a lesson in sew-
ing. As it was my first attempt to
new I was slow to learn. After the
'sewing lesson we stood for a picture
which was nut good.
I Another time Miss Halsey came
to our home and instructed me in
'canning and making my club apron.
I We enjoyed her very much.
I Cp to the IKth of September I
have gathered 1.326 pounds of to-
matoes. Have used 1!U pounds at
ii'mm- unviMK iHFiii ! riunin ivi
which 1 received $20.65 My vines
are still bareing. My exhibits are
ready for the club rally at Lubbock.
I am very glad I joined and thank-
ful for all I have learned and the
pleasant club meetings.
