This is the spirit of this new
wonderful energetic organization.
This is the spirit of the men who
compose it. This is the spirit of
the. times in which we Jive and the
history to be written long1 after
those three patriotic citizens are
things of dust remains to reveal the
wonder of their efforts but in the
meantime they will see Lubbock
grow and their business prosper
while the history is in the milking.
The progTam at the Thurduy's
meeting was interesting throughout.
Raleigh Brown and his orchestra
were there adding ltiuic to the.
feast and merriment to the hearts
of their bearers.
F. L. Klctt a new member of the
lub was chairman of the day and
under his guidance the meeting was
interesting the program being out-
lined on both un enlightening ami
amusing plan.
The more serious discussion was
that of Itr. J. T. Krutgir. who made
a splendid address on "What I con-
sider the greatest achievement in
Medical Si len. e in recent years"
which was designed to make us
think of the great value to us of
our fellow men and of what great
serviie we should be to those with
whom we are associated. Of those
he commented on were the discov-
erers and inventors of various meth-
ods of combating disease and mech-
anisms for diagnosing cases princi-
pal of whom was the inventor of
the X-Hsy. a very intereting dis-
cussion on which was made. The
medical science is getting so wide
in scope that no one man is ex-
pected to learn it all. and that
specialists have found that to take
up one part of the human body and
learn that so well that more effi-
ciency l learned.
Miss Ktila Mae Craves gave a
very comical and interesting reading
that was absolutely true to life that
truly entertained her hearers.

The consuming of foods during
office hours is calculated to create
pep or influence. Teptomlsm is haz-
ardous. This conclusion is estab-
lished by the sad fate of a young
man which i. reluted in a letter he
wrote to an editor as follows:
"I am a young man 4 years old.
Being of poor but honest parents
I like many another young Amer-
ican was very anxious to succeed
in business. Therefore when I lie-
cepted a position with a wholesale
grocery tn-use in a nearby city I
determined that if I failed it woidd
be through no fault of my own.
The sa'ary to start was slight but
I was assiired by the manager that
there was pk-n'y of room for ad-
vancement .
"I huikVJ down to W"rk and be-
gin; to ca-t aVout f r by which

the organization ard at the same
time bet'e-r my fortunes. N.'iMrul-
ly I read a great maty periodica!'
and my eye was attracted by cer-
tain of the ad--.
"Toe oms th;t appealed to me
especially were those urging me to
use cer'ain foods etc. since they
wire guaranteed to give me more
pep and efficiency in my work. De-
termined not to overtook any bet
and swayed perhaps by an unfort-
unate fundness fur sweets I de-
termined to try the things niention-
ed. "Well it might not have been so
bad if I had confined my eating to
the dining-rr m table hut most of
the ads urged me to keep the deli-
cacies in my desk and eat them con-
tinuously. One ad showed a meet-
ing of a board of director. The
most forceful person in the lot was
standing with a paper in hii hand
and demanding whether the rest of
the directors had had their iron for
the day. It urged all business men
to est raisins. Another dip!ny as-
sured me that every commercial per-
son of any importance kept a pai k-
age of dates in the drawer of his
de-k where they could 'i; instantly
consulted if he felt fiitiiT.ie coining
on. Still another page induced ine
to boy a nuanti'y ef yeast and made
me eat it when 1 could think cf
nuthirg ele to do. Another com.
iRiiy was kind enough l) ct forth
a schedule by which I could most
efficiently gtude my trim .hewing.
Though it was npir.t office rules
and alluring ad made me uok cig-
arettes l y proxirg that a business
man who didn't ue this particular
brand would cnmple'e'v I"-! caste.
Kor the same reason 1 took to ap-
ples chocolate peanuts fitrs and
Kkimo l'ie keeping them of course
filed by a system of my on in a
certsln" top drawer of my desk.
"After about a week of this in-
tensive efficiency eating. I bei ame
suddenly ill and had to leave the of-
fice for home. The doctor raid it
was acute indigestion and made ine
stsy in bed for two days.
I can see now thnt I might have
averteil disa-ter if the advertise-
ments had directed no t.i keep my
rwip.producing' foods in a lewer dek
drawer instead of an upper. But
it was not to be. On my return to
the office I was told that the "Old
Man" wanted to see me. The rea-
son he wanted to see me' was to dis-
charge me. It arpears that when
1 left my office I had a couple or
Kskimo Pies on file in the top draw-
er. During the night the. room got
so hot with the windows closed that
the Ties melted and ran down with
the remilt thnt they unwittingly
canceled a number if non-cancellable
contracts that were in a lower
drawer.
"I ask publicity of this untoward
occurrence not because of th in-
justice with which I have been
treated but in the hope th-it it may
prove a warning to some other
young man whose chances may be
damaged in a like manner."
