Earth Only Place
Where Life Exists
Scientist Believes
WASHINGTON. Dt;c. 14. CAP)—
Dr. Walter S. Adtims, director of
Mt. Wilson Observatory, California.,
says that the earth quite possibly is
the only place in the Universe where
lit* can exist.
Astronomers are less inclined Minn
i-formfirly, to believe that there ruty
be life on other planets of the solar
system or on planets elsewhere in
the Universe, he stated in a lecture
at the Carnegie Institution of Wash-
ington. There is little evidence, he
added, that other systems of planets
like ours exist in the Universe.
Repotting latest discoveries about
the planets si the solar system, fyt.
Adams said only two, Venus and
Mars, could possibly support life and
of the two Venus is much more fa-
vorable.
No one has ever seen Venus itself,
but only (he perpetual clouds that
-«urroun,i it. Above this eloud layer,
however, Is a layer of carbon dioxide
gas half a mile thick. This may In-
dicate that plant. life cart exist on
Mars,' since plants live on carbon
dioxide.
warmer than the earth, Dr. Adams
The surface of Venus probably- is
said, but above the clouds it has a
"stratosphere" resembling our own,
with a. temperature 25 degrees be-
low zero.
|No sign °f oxygen, which would
be neeessary to life as we know it
on earth, has been found in the at.-
mosphere of either Venus or Mars.
A visitor from the earth would need
to tnko Ids own oxygen supply. Ve-
nus may, however, have oxygen and
water vapor, also essential to life,
below the clouds.
'That prater that Is frozen in the
polar ice caps of Mars probably is
no more than would fill a large lake,
Dr. Adams estimated, showing that
Mars Is mostly ji. desejrt.
If there is any vegetation on Mais,
he said, It Is probably a primitive
type that needs little 'nourishment
from the atmosphere and can stand
great cold, for even the tropical re-
gions of Mars resell 41> 'degrees be-
low sterO at night. He pictured Mats
