PAYMENTS
ARE BETTER
Collin county has something to bo
prouil of in the way her citizens
have paid their poll tax this year.
Not that the increase is so very
much greater than last year,or any
previous year, but because the pay-
ments ltuve been regular, showing
the spirit of a desire on the part of
i he tax payers to exercise their rl^flft
as free sovereigns.
A great many or the boxes of the
county have shown a decided in-
crease, while a very few have shown
a decrease. The decrease is ac-
counted for only on the theory that
probably quite a number have moved
away, and their place has been taken
by others who had paid in other
counties. . '
The total number of polls paid in
this county for the current year
reached the satisfactory iigure of
7,079. Added to this are the ex-
empt ions, which amount to 1.4-1.
This, of course, compose the num-
ber of "unders" only. In addition
to this there will probably be about
800 or 400 "overs" In the county
who are not required to secure an
exemption certificate. This will
leave an approximate number of 8,-
423 to 8,523. From this number
should be deducted about seventy-
five. for cancellations—receipts
which had been made out by mis-
take, marked void, and ro-lsBUed.
This will leave a grand total of
8,3 10 to 8,44(5 bona-fide, legal voters
in the county, which is about from
100 to 200 more than last year,
when the oilicial report gives the
number for that year of 7,872, actual
payments.
Following is the complete list of
the payments covering the forty-
three boxes in the county:

Blue Ridge and Celina are prob-
ably the banner boxes of the coun-
ty, population considered. It is an-
nounced in the Tax Collectors oflice
that last year, not a tract of land,
nor even a town lot went, on the de-
linquent list from Blue Ridge, And
for this year, it is announced that
every man in the Celina precinct
was supplied with a poll tax receipt.
After a thorough search, one lone
man was found late Wednesday af-
ternoon, and he was warned that
unless he hustled to the collectors
office,at once, he could not borrow
coffee, molasses or corn meal rrom
his neighbors a single time during
the coming year. Tills terrible
throat had the desired effect, and
the poor fellow lost no time in
reaching the office and applying for
the coveted scrap of paper which
meant so much lo him for tlie twelve
months to come. And lie was happy
only when he had been waited upon
and had the little slip safely tucked
away in Ills inside pocket.
Outside of the three largest towns
In the county—McKlnney, Piano
and Farmersvllle—Weston was the
banner box, with Mine Rldgo run
nlng a very dose second, there be-
ing a difference of only four In the
number of payments.
Considering the general conditions
of the country. Collin county has
made a most commendable showing
In the matter of poll tax payments
for the year 1012.
The number of clly poll tax re-
ceipts Issued for (ho current year
show an Increase of seventy-nine
over the number issued last. year.
The records In the oflice of City As-
sessor and Collector Forest Hoard
rdiow thnt a total of 724 receipts
were issued from his ofllco up to
midnight of January 31. Last, year
the total number reached G45. This
Is a most satisfactory showing for
the city of McKlnney, and is an evi-
dence that the citizens are taking a
little more interest in the welfare
of their town. This number does
not Include the "unders" and
"overs " of which there will likely
he more than one hundred.
