Former Collin County Man Making
Good.
John W. McKinney was here Fri-
day. He is a former tax col-
lector of this county, whose home
for years has been at Anna. About
two years ago he received an ap-
pointment from the governor to the
position of superintendent of some
of the state convict farms. He was
in Wharton county till the first of
the present year when he was trans-
ferred to a 2500-acre farm at Fow-
ler in Hill county, where he runs
the plantation with 157 convicts.
The latter are all young men—sup-
posed to be twenty years old or
younger. He runs the big planta-
tion in corn and cotton. Mr. Mc-
Kinney is off on a brief leave of ab-
sence. Mrs. McKinney came up to
Anna with him where they arc
spending a few enjoyable days at
home and with their numerous rel-
atives and friends.
ilttle Lacy Child Better.
Bun, the 8-year-old son of Mr.
and Mrs. W. W. Lacy, who reside
about a mile north of Altoga, who
was taken suddenly sick while at
school about two or ttlree weeks ago
and who, it was said at the time had
meningitis, is reported to be much
better today. It was a mistake as to
the little fellow having meningitis.
It was a stroke of paralysis. The
many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Lacy
hope for their little son a speedy re-
covery.
Our old time friend, T. C. Martin,
of Loving, Young County, this
state, called to see us for a brief
period last Sunday night. For many
years he lived in this county in the
Westminster community but who, in
Feb. 1904 moved West and stopped
for a time in Wise county. Later
however, he moved still further and
settled In Loving. His father, W. L.
Martin, back In the sixties when it
was too warm to be comfortable
south of Mason and Dixon's line,
carried' a small book In his vest
pocket in which he kept a diary.
The leaves are yellow with age, but
some of the entries are plain enough
to lie easily read even now, and hero
is one:
"Camp Lucky, Jan. 7th, 1804.
The guards will pass W. L. Martin
to Col. Smith's camp and return him
this day.
J. T. VEAL,
Col. Com. 3rd Inf. Reg. T S. T."
Mr. Martin will probably remain
in the county two or three weeks,
visiting relatives, old friends and
superintend some repairs contem-
plated on the old home near West-
minster.
