CHAPTER XVI
"Sit clown," began Clive Clcos-
paugh in a new, commanding voice.
"I want to lalk lo you."
L.ianc obeyed abruptly, astonished
at Hit: change In his manner.
"My mother's gone for a drive,"
Clive said in prelaee. "I made sure
of that—didn't want to be inter-
rupted. Lock here, the situation is
this. You probably don't know it
but I am tied to mother's apron
strings. Haven't a cent in my own

glanced at him timidly now and
again across the delft dowl with the
late roses, the waxen candles in
their silver holders.
"—Louis XIV," Mr. Williams was
finishing some argument magister-
ially. "I always said thc piece was
definitely in that period."
In a daze Liane listened, watched,
crumbled bread. Dimly she knew
this night marked a crisis in her
life. She seemed to be moving, act-
ing in a dream. She had the sensa-
tion of having spoken these words,
made the!:c self same gestures in a
previous existence.
When the long, pompous meal fi-
nally was ended the four sat In the

cups of eggshell fineness.
"You children run off amuse each

r.l' decision had come she wanted to
push it aside. Fut she fallowed him
meekly.
Clive twiddled the dials for a mo-
ment.. then turned to her with an
abrupt movement.
"Well, let's have it," lie rlcmnndcd.
"Tell me what you really think of
me. I know I was no end of a iool
to have asked-you what I did today.
I afk your pardon."
Car/: nodded, like a spent child.
"Y u'll promise to stop worry-
ing?"
"I'll try."
But Liane knew the promise was
a half-hearted one. She thought
suddenly. "If 1 were a prospective
daughter of the house mother would
accept Mrs. Clcespaugh's hospitality
without question."
It was as If a way had opened to
her, dawdingly clear. There was
nothing else for her to do but ac-
cept Olive's preposterous proposal.
That would justify her mother's
presence in the house indefinitely.
She stood locking down at the
lather made. He left everything to pale face, the hollows and shadows
mother, stipulating that i was to hi the thin checks. Hadn't she said

The girl did not answer. After
a moment he went on.
"That's why I wanted to talk to
ycu," blurted out Clive embar-
rasvcdly, " I have a plan which
concerns ycu. D'you want to hear
about It?"
Liane nodded, her thoughful eyes
on his lowering lace.
"Look, you'll probably think I'm
all sorts of a fool but it's no harm
to talk It over'. Tine thought ,1s

He stirred impatiently. "You

Liane agreed that the prospect
was agreeable. She dressed with un-
usual care. Her old white frock, fresh
from the cleaners' hands, seemed to
have taken on a new lease of life.
She spilled a few drops of Jasmine
on her handkerchief. When she went
In to sit with Cass over her alluring i
supper tray her mother said, fond- !

someone had given you a million
dollars."
She said quietly. "It's I who must
ask yours, t was stunld and school-
girlish. I've been thinking It over."
"You've reconsidered?"
She nodded. She could lint quite
trust her voice.
"Gnotl girl." Liane stifled the hys-
terical laugh which rose to her lips.
Was there ever so quaint a wooing?
Clive fumbh'd with liis impecca-
ble tic.
"We've got to make some sort of
show of being pals, at least, before
we spring it on mother."
"Of course. I understand that."
She was demure.
"Look here." the young man said,
giving her a 'lirew glance. "This will

You're nothing but a kid. 111 play
it according to the rules."
Rhe was mystified. She said. Tell
me what to do, and I'll do it.
"Why, it'll bs nothing but the
regular thing." he said. "Going about
together, sending flowers and what-
not. Mean to bay you've never been
bcaucd before?" aslifd
ishing young man.
Liane shook her head.
"It just Isn't reasonable," Cllvc
objected seriously. "A gill who looks
like you—"
"What — what do I lnok like?
cried Liane, struck by his tone.
• Oh, a sort of glimmering dryad."
She put her hands to her hot
checks. There was something about
the young man's gaze that set her
to blusing.
"You don't have to say tilings like
that." she told him.
He turned moodv again. Strange,
incalculable young man! In a voice
suddenly cold and expressionless lie
said, "Of course not. Sorry. I won't (
offend again."
Liane, sensitive to thc change in
his mood, caught him up abruptly,
"Oh, but you misunderstood — I
didn't mean—"
Clive said, "It's to be kept on a
Etr.'ctly business basis. Isn't that
what you meant? Eight. Sony I
transgressed."
Oh. well, she thought, If he's go-
ing to b:1 mulish about It. let him!
She stole a side glance at thc mutin-
ous profile.
"Lei's see, could we break it to
them in about three — say four
weeks?" Clive asked a few moments
later.
"That will be all right," Liane
agreed.
"Well, how's for darting rltf'ltf
now wiih a bit ol dancing*" the
young man wanted to know. He
tinned thc dial.s and presently the
throb and Ival of a far off dance
orchestra entered the room.
He held out his arms.
The young girl, after an instant's
hesitation, slid into them. Ah. but
she hadn't known he would dance
like that! She had danced with Van
Rcbard and had loved it. She had
been joyous dancing with Chuck
Desmond but never before had she
experienced this fluid perfection of
motion accomplished by the born
danoiivr man with wings on hit>

this particular tune with tills partic-
