Careful attention on the part of a
dairy man during the two weeks that
follow a calf's Idrlh will often mean
the ultimate addition to Ills herd of
i large, well-developed milking cow,
instead of a sickly, undersized stunt*
•d animal. The problem of raising
calves is today a more complicated
one than when it was customary to
Iced a larger amount of whole milk.
Tin- dairyman will therefore find it
to his advantage to take the best
possible cure of Ills calves from tin

pall, K to 10 pounds of milk ii day,

The feeding times should be as near-

is advisable lo feed more than twice

constant; and to insure this, scales
should be used as variation lends to
gel the digestive organs out of or-

should be taken to prevent any di-
gestive disorder, as all such trouble
hlndoi-H tin growth and development
of the animal. Cnlf scours Is the
most common indication of this con-
dition.
The following-named precautions,
to a great extent, tend to prevent
scours:
I'-eed regularly.
He sure that the milk is always
sweet and warm.
In feeding use only clean pails.
Feed the calf a little less than It
wants.
Reduce the amount of milk one-
half if tlti animal becomes sick.
The amount of milk fed can lie
gradually increased until at the end
of the second Week the calf receives
from II to 1 r. pounds of milk a day.
At this time the gradual substitution
of skim milk for whole tnllk may
commence. Hay and grain should tie
placed before the calf lit this period,
and It will lie found lo nibble at them
a little. At the end of the third week
the substitution of the skim milk will
be complete. By slow changes the
