This immense line with its terminus two
or three years ago but 80 or 60 miles west of
Dallas in now TOO miles further on with Its
nreseiit terminus at Kl Paso. It is one of
the great highways of the continent and
the chief line in the Oould southwestern
system. The road owns an immense
mount of rolling stock of every descrip-
tion hn t thin boa ever been found inade
quate to handle the tremendous business of
the great and growing couutry tnroupn
which the line passes. Duringthe past row
months of the present year and last full an
immense amount of corn cotton cattle
wheat and freight of every kind has been
hauled and the travel bus been proportion-
ately large.
The mileage now controlled owned and
operated by the Texas Pacific company
may be briefly set forth as follows : Tex-
arkana (the initial point of the road con-
necting with the Iron Mountain system) to

it is generally known to principal points in
oil directions; Marshall Texas to Shreve-

For operating conveniences the system is
divided into three divisions viz: Eastern

Shreveport to New Orleans which will be
in full operation in a few weeks from pres-

traffic has been maintained between the lat
ter named cities by agreement ot tne
Texas & Pacific company and the
Morgan line. The connections of the
company are at Texarkana with the 8t.
Louis Iron Mountain & Southern and the
Bt. Louis tiarrow guage: at Jefferson with
the East Line & Red River; at Longview
with the International & Great Northern
and Sabine Vallev: at Mineola Willi the
Missouri Pacilio and the International it

Gulf; Colorado & Santa Fe and the Texas
Trunk; at Fort Worth with the Missouri
Pacific the Gulf Colorado & Santa Fe and
the Fort Worth it Denver City; at Cisco
with the Texas Central; at Sierra Blanco
with the Galveston Harrisburg & San
Antonio: at El Paso with the
Southern Pacific to all important points in
New Mexico. Arizona. California and else
where and with the Atchison Topeka &
Banta Fe. Besides the above named rail-
road connections the many stage lines
diverging from the line along its entire
length make close connections with trains.
These advantages together with its splen-
did steel-laid road-bed modern equipments
and successful management render it need-
' less to say that this great Uanscontinentul
hiirhwav. traversing as it does with its nu
merous tributary lines the very heart of
the richest portion of Texas
is in full possession even beyond the ami
ipatioDS ot the most ardent projectors and
friends of a business heavy remunerative
and rapidly increasing. The construction
of this road has tended more to develop the
hitherto unknown resources and possibili-
ties ot Texas than perhaps any other ele-
ment In the history ol the state. Up to the
time ol its extension to the Rio Grande the
entire west of Parker county except in
rare instances was given up to grazing;
with practically no thought or hope even
among the most credulous of becoming
anything else in the near future. Now in-
stead of large herds roaming over tne face
of the country and as a natural conse-
quence a very sparse population can be
ceuiuii cu-iued fcuuia ft ilh kui tolla-
ble surroundings producing cotton corn
small grains vegetables and fruit and a
population of intelligent and prosperous
people. Stephens Callahan and adjacent
counties are noteworthy examples where
but a year or two since they oould but
enumerate their population oy the hun-
dreds. Now the figures will reach well into
the thousands and a steady and rapid in-
crease in progress. Much of thfe is due to
the liberal policy of the land department of
the mad nnder the management of Com-
missioner A Drama. Experimental farms
have been established at various
points along the line which have
proven eminently successful and demon-
strated beyond question the capability
of the sou or this nitberto-beueved un-
productive region to be among the very
best for reneral agricultural purpose. A.
result bighlv sattafactvry and astonishing
to many of tbe old settlers of the country
who never tested tbe soil baa been demon-
strated by this year's efforts of the farm-
ers. To giv an idea of the rant quantity of
lands owned by the Texas Pacific com-
pany which are now In market at prices

East Line Bed Klver Kallroad.
A more accurate name for this road at
present would be perhaps the Jefferson
Narrow Gauge branch of the Missouri Pa
cific as it has within the last year been pur
chased by Jay Gould and made part of th
Missouri Pacilio southwestern system. It
Is now completed and trains are running
from Jefferson to McKinney a distance of
154 miles and through the counties of Ma-
rlon Cass Morris Titus. Camp Franklin
Houklns. Hunt and Collin. A' branch ol
the line is projected to run to Dallas from
Sulphur Springs In Hopkins county. The

tionate number of passenger coaches. Last

Having recently been completed to McKin

Increase in traffic of all kinds and increased
importance of the line may naturally and
rationally be predicted during the present
and coming seasons. The principal sta-
tions on the road are McKinney Oreene-

of tbe line being turned into a broad gauge.

running ths line southeasterly from Dallas
through ths Texas pineries to

as it must In lime be it will be
to Dallas one of tbs most important roads
in her railway system. Difficulties of one
kind and another arose among Its original
or first directors and projectors and the
mad is now in the bsnds of a receiver.
When these disputes are settled and the
right parties get s bold of it It will undoubt-

than sufficient to pay tbe running expense.
