Destroying co r Worms. A few years since
1 destroyed cut worms from a field of corn af-
ter a method somewhat similar to the one men-
tioned in the last Agriculturist. I hitched n
horse to the forward wheels of a light wagon
then took two rake handles cut them just four
inches longer than the dinmeier of the wheels
nnd tied them across the wheels so that when
I drove over the field there would be a smooth
track made by the impression of tht wheel for
the worms to travel in. and a succession of lit-
tle pits for them to fall into made by the pro-j-Ming
rake handles. The next morning on
going over the ground I found I had caught
thousands in the pits. They all died in llie
i-un before noon. .If it had rained the earth
would have fallen upon them and they would
have lived. I think five lo eight inches too
deep; one and a half or two inches is the pro-
per depth. Agriculturist.

Deceased Cattle Death as a Pbeventa-
TrE of Contagion. An alarming and very fa-
tal disease has mnde its appearand among the
cattle of Massachusetts. In many instances
whole herds are infected. The worst feature
of the disease is that no cure for it has yet been
discoveied and when the cattle become affec-
ted they have to be slaughtered ot once in
order to prevent contugion. At the session
of the last Legislature a number of Commis-
sioners were appointed to superintend the
slaughter of diseased cattle ; to condemn them
etc. They now have their hands full for
scarcely a day passes that one or more herds are
killed. At North Brookfield on Tuesday after
a heavy slaughter the bodies were interred in
the orchards and fields in large numbers. Up
to this time the whole number of animals kill-
el had been 103 valued it wns said at $5000.
As the whole appropriation was only $10000
and 100 fresh cases were reported the commis-
sioners decided to stop the slaughter till the
Governor could be consulted. . Other districts
nre equally at bad and the loss throughout the
State will be immenre.
