Tho importanco' of that portion
of tho United States producing tlio
noblo metals upon which depends
in a groat measure our r.ational sol-
vency and tlio ability to restore tho
present depreciated paper medium
to a specio basis suggested to Con-
gress tho advisability of procuring
rolinblo statistical information of
tho gold and silver producing re-
gions. An act was accordingly
passed July 28 186'G making ap-
propriations for that purposo in ac-
cordance with which tho Secretary
of the Treasury appointed Mr. J.
Ross Browno to tho districts wost
of tho Rocky Mountains and Mr.
J. W Taylor to tho cast. Mr.
Browno in his ronort of 500 pages
devotes to Montana perhaps a doz-
en lines and Mr. Taylor in his pam-
phlet generously bestows nearly
