"To obtain pnwor yon must have strength. We
hevnd attuiui-d this In the peculiarity of thu frame
l efore alluded lo vnd iu the ue of a bar in the di-
rection und on a line with Ihe heavy sire) stringing
under the "over strung I a." This bar pn. suing
brnealh the atrf niiitr und running diagonally from
the front riiilit-lmiid roruer. to tbo back leli.hnnd
corner of thoci.no gives strength where moat need
cd and where utnst ot her pianos fall ; in fact it might
not inaptly tortucd the aplno or buck bone uf the pi-
ano. "They slaid In tune longer than other pianos to
effect which we are again enabled by the peculiar
elmpe of our Iron frame to use abort pins so that the
piano Is strung close lo the wrcst-i tank j thus al-
most doinjr anny with a leverage sirain on the tun-
ing pin Mblch hi some pianos is ut least three-
quarters of an inch nbnvo the pin causing the pin
to loosen and often bringing It In contact with the
Iron plate. The construction of tho wrest-plank
Iiri nlso a great advantage ovor those of other pianos
In lioing formed nf four sections of hard wood laid
horizontally nnd firmly glued and fastened the grain
of each section crosr-lutr. the grain of tbe one next to
it In a different line or direction. So that the tuning-
pins have the pressure of the end wood against thorn
In every direction making It Impossible for the pin
to loosen Itself as it dons where it has a pressure
against thesidosof the grain as it has in all other
pianos. This too prevents the splitting of the
wrest-plauk.
"The construction of the case and the combina-
tion of the iron frame therewith we bIho claim as
being new and improved. The left lower end of the
frame being imbedded or set in the solid wood or
we believe fto use a technical term) butted against the
wrest-plank at a point and on a line just Inside of
the line of the tuning-pins by which means first
great additional strength Is gained seeotid the
frame being so sunk In the wood allows tho string-
ing (as before described) lo be cloae to the wrest-
nUnk and third the great desideratum so long
sought for for the trade a full irou frame without a
possibility of the tuning-plus coming in contact
with It is gained.
'OuraurafTe arrangement Is another great im-
provement effected in a simple but suHrior manner.
A hollow Ur cast with the frame and opening on
the under side and exivrrrilng along the lino of Ihe
tuning-pins has fitted into It a reversed wooden
b rid go in which the bridge plus are Inserted. This
reversed bridge being a trifle lower than tbe wrest-
plank gives an upward as alsoa side-bearing to the
itrinxs and by this admirable arrangement an
agraffe Is obtained that gives a firm position to the
strings that no blow from the hammer can displace.
A similar plan on an Iron bedding baa loeti Iwfore
at torn p ted but alwavs In connection with the com-
plicated under-dam ere which invariably become
displaced and out nf order.
In the Arion Piano we ue Ihe French damper
universally acknowledged aa the heat acting from
their own weight alone. They are firmly hinged
and can more neither to tbe right nor to the left but
only In the direction reqnlred. Thus it will be s'-en
that oar agraffe arrangement Is complete not only
In itself but in all ita connections with other parts
of the action.
"With other agralfce now Innse there are eeTerai
dlfflrnllfee that cannot remedied. Urst tbe wire
strings run through an eye in the tep ef a acrew or
pin and must At the eye exactly or It will create an
unpleasant buxxfngeound. The same difficulty Is
apt to occur when from constant nsing tha strain
npon tbeetrlnz lessens In Its site or the constant vl-
brat Ion on tbe Inside of I be aye wears tie eye larger.
The oerew or pin. too. for the same reason (con-
stant vlbratioi on It) will at times become looae and
cause an nnplenaant jarring to the chorda. None of
IheeediaadTantagearan happen to Ihe Arion agraffe.
We have abovr given Mr. Manner's claims nr the
snnerlority of the Arion Piano Portee and his objec-
tions lo other pianos. In nearly hts own word- and
he waa very ready to take ns throughout the factory
and explain all the different depart men la of ft lo
W had a fair chance of jnd(tin of ita mcrita and
think the claims of the Arhtn are well baaed. Ills
at IrftSt one of the very best pianos before tbe public.
