Prof. Marks has organized a singing
class of thirty to practice sacred music in
the Methodist Church. A most desirable
undertaking.
The health of the city is much inter
fered with by the unusual prevalence of
chills colds and some cases of pneumo
nia.
The wcathor continues sunny and
braceing with now and then a suspicion
of a norther net at all agreeable to those
who work outside.
The volume of travel through here
continues biisk the number of arrivals at
ths hotels being considerablo and in
cluding a large number of "prospectors."
Work on the Texas and l'aoitlo Kail-
way bridge continues to go forward rap-
idly. Ties and iron are ready for track
laying here and the first spike will soon
bo driven.
The general business of the city has
been very brisk this week the movement
of cotton being however only moderate.
To-day being the field day in town for
our country friends business will as usu-
al be briskly.

war the severest ever known. At a sLatioa

Mysteries of the Campaign Unraveled
From the Naw York Suu.
Some of the mysterioB of the late presi
dential campaign are in prsoess of rapid
unravelling. The Sun called attention a
few weeks ago to some significant tracts in
connection with the eleotion of Judge Mer-
rimon the Conservative candidate for
governor of North Carolina to the United
States Senate by Kepublioan votes In the
legislature. We nave now another step in
that remarkable transaction in the bring
ng forward of Senator John Pool of
North Carolina for a cabinet appointment
and his support by Sonntors Morton Scott
and others of the inner administration
ring.
North Carolina was the first stale to
hold an eleotion after the presidential
nominations were made. It was all-impor-
ance to .the; administration to carry It.
They failed. The legislature was Con-
servative by a large majority and Mer-
rimon the Conservative candidate for
governor was clcoted ; but after a week'B
delay to doctor the returns he wns coun-
ted out. Tho effect was felt in Maine and
n the Oclober stateswas nevor counter
acted and in the event accomplished tho
result aimed at the defeat of Greeley and
the election of Grant.
The frauds by whioh Merrimon was
counted out were hardly denied. But
when the legislature assembled though
he had a strong case and a friendly court
he offered no contest ilis law partner
was appointed solicitor-general by the
president. The senatorial election took
place.' John Pool was a oandidate for
re-election bov. Vance was nominated
by the Conservatives. Thore was a bolt in
the Conservative ranks and for several
days no choice. Then John Pool withdrew;
the Republicans went bodily for Merri-
mon ; ho was elected and John Pool tele-
graphed to the president that it was a
great triumph and had strengthened the
administration. And now John Pool is
expecting a cabinet appointment and is
supported by Morton and the ring mana-
gers who understood this whole plot from
the beginning. .
One other fact of siguifioanco and it
can be stated still more briehy. It was
aqsolutely necessary for tbe administra-
tion to carry Pennsylvania. It was car-
ried by frauds which the friends of the
president themselves confessed were un-
paralleled in their magnitude. Only one
man was proseouted for illegnl voting. He
was convicted and sentenced to eighteen
months imprisonment rretidmt Grant
pardoned Aim latt vtik.
Charles i ranois Adams was right when
he told Thurlow Weed that his own nomi-
nation would have made no difference in
the result. It made no difference who was
the candidate. The Credit Mobilier par-
ty meant fe carry the eUction. Tbey did

their respect and appreciation of the great

about 4:30 o'clock the German brass band
in front breathing solemn music followed
by the Schentsens with arms reversed

filled with mourners friends and admir
