ence to-day eaused by the reception of

Clinton B. Fisk.

colored witnessed the hanging of Bill
Kelly. A passing train frightened a
horse and stampeded about one thous-
and persons. (Several were hurt.
Little Hock May 8. Itst night a
party of twenty-tive Baxter men un-
dertbecommaud of Lieutenant Welch
took passage ou the steamer Hallie
which was in charge of Captain Sam
Houston anil his brother Kit HoustoH.
Their object was to Intercept and cap-
ture one hundred and sixty stand of
arms belonging to the Industrial uni-
versity which were sli pped on a Hat-
boat from Fort Smith Wednesday in
charge of six men. The Brooksites
heard of this expedition and started
Colonel John Brooker with his regi-
ment of two hundred colored men on a
special train over the Fort Smith rail-
road to intercept the b at at Palermo
twenty miles above thecny. Brooker's
party arrived there before the
Hallie (rot Into position and as
the boat came along fired on ber.

through his clothing. Dr. Dale who
was witli him received u slight wound
in the leg. Biiscomb Leigh who wus
wounded In Hie leg is badly hurt. J)lm
Meyers pilot was shot through the
breast and twice through the leg. He
Is thought to be mortally wounded.

Tuo Fort Smith trains have been
stonned bv the Brooksites to prevent
any more Baxter men from reaching

reported to-night that trains on the
Cairo and Fulton railroad arc to be
stopped for the same purpose. Tlie
mails were prevented from going south
by the Brooksites last night. There
has been unusual activity in both
camps to-day and several arrests on
both sides. Notwithstanding the car-
tel a largo number of members of the
legislature uru here already and unless
prevented by the Brooks party by
force there seems little doubt that
there will be ujuuruni in both houses
on Monday. There is talk of them
meeting ut some other point in tlie
state outside the state house. The lat-
est reports to-night state that four were
killed on Brooks' side during the at-
tack to-day and a number were wound-
ed. Brigadier General Thompson and
Colonel Fowler of the Brooks forces
were captured at Clarksville yesterday.

special from Little Kock to-day says:
At noon the picket tiring ceased and
a general engagement was prevented
by Colonel ltosu sending across the
river a detatchment of United States
troops under command of Lieutenant
Morrison who murcneu uis men ue-
tweeu the two opposing lines where
they are this moment.
The result of the light is known to
have been one wounded on Baxter's
side and one killed and one wounded
ou Brooks' side.
King White commanded the Baxter
forces in person his movements being
directed by General Churchill who it
seems made tlio move to prevent the
capture of an expected train on tlie
Cairo and Fulton railroad bringing a
number of tlie members of the legisla-
ture and u comnan v of men. The leg
islature is now in session at the Hinkla
block Governor Baxter having re-
voked so much of his martial law proc-
lamation us refers to their assembling.
Governor Baxter has positively in-

Little Hock May 12. The regulars
yesterday took all the arms at the ar-
senul to pieces to prevent either Brooks
or Baxter's troops from using them.

Colonel White of Baxter's force

After skirmishing forsome two hours.

river and stopped both parties releas

Four of Baxter's men were reported
killed. Two of Brooks' men were
killed and two wounded.
The clerk of the circuit court swore
iu the members of the legislature.
The regulars have throwu up a barri
cade across Markhum street.
Colonel ltose has telegraphed Gen-
eral Shermuu for a coinpauy of regular
cavalry.
Washington May 12. A reply has
been received from Brooks declining to
accede to the terms proposed by Presi-
dent Grant through tlie attorney gen-
eral. The question will be the subject of
cabinet consultation to-day. It Is very
probable that the general government
after having exerted Its best influences
for the preservation of peace and re
storing polieal Harmony at Lltlle
Kock will now decide definitely on tbe
case and that means will be taken to
have the decision enforced against any
opposition.
In the house a resolution waa onerea
by Mr. Nunn of Tennessee and re
ferred to the judiciary committee for
the appointment of provisional gov-
ernor of Arkansas.
A resolution was offered by Mr. Fort
