VOL. XXV
THE TERRIBLE WEATHER.
The terrible weather which has pre
Tailed ia this region sines early fall
while it has worked unalloyed evil
directly yet is not without it Won of
profit for the future if only wo are
wise enough to appU ' . We in Texas
are not alone so far as the bad ejects
of this evil weather are concerned In
Illinois Iowa Indiana and Missouri
the corn of the last season is quietly
rotting in the fields because the farm-
ers cannot enter them to gather it
The loss of this entire crop here would
certainly he a disaster bat there ling
the principal crop it is much more
grave. The circumstance taken all
together is a moat practical and power.
ful illustration of the soundness of the
principle of diversification and teaehes
that no farmer can afford to tie himself
to one favorite crop. We here in Tezaa
have lost much of our corn much cot-
ton and have had our preparations for
next year's planting greatly retarded.
Uowever with all theae drawbacks we
have saved an immense wheat crop and
though clogged and deferred by the
unprecedented wet weather yet buai-.
nees has not been destroyed. It is true
we will not realize the full benefit of
the past season's operations hut still
no very great distress will result. The
atiliction falls heavier upon our mer
cantile and manufacturing interests
than upon the farmers.
Perhaps if claims now due from our
merchant and others were pressed at
once many would be forced to suc-
cumb who if a little leniency is mani
fested will come through without loss
to themselves or totheir creditors. This
fact becomes very apparent when we
reflect that in four or five month we
will be selling and handling another
great crop of wheat Right here we
wish to say that because planting has
been retarded especially that ol fall
wheat the wide-awake farmer will sup-
ply himself with spring wheat and just
so soon as a plow can run at all will
be busy putting in the ' seed to
make good as far as iossible
the deficit which must result if
some such measure as this U not
adopted. It cannot be urged to a i.fteu
or too strongly upou lae attention of
the farmers of Tex. They have never
yet been found behind when great ex-
pectation have been formed of them.
They are out of debt have money aud
provisions with which to muke a crop
and the schemes of improvement hich
were inaugurated and in progre&s based
ujhjo the vast profits of last season's
operations must be.deferred. But this
suspension need only be temporary and
cau be resumed like mercantile and
manufacturing enterprises wh n wheat
comes into market in May June and
July.
The deplorable condition of tber.ds.
caused by these incessant rains suggests
the necessity of some scheme of im-
provement which will do away with
the evil or at least to ameliorate its
worst e fleets in a measure. We are
loreed whether we will or not. to grapple
with he idea of either ilacAdamising or
plunking tbem.Our principle roads could
be planked readily and cheaply. This
work should be done by tuecounty . and
not by private enterprise. Every av-
enue of trade so far as the people of the
county and the city are concei ned
should be free. We doubt if tu :h a
system of toll roads as prevail in Ten-
nessee and Kentucky could be main-
tained here the people would use
use tbeia only in such weather and in
such limes a we are having now. We
usually have nine or ten months weath-
er in Texas when our natural highways
are the finest on earth ; so a system of
oils would be unprofitable for a far
greater part of the year. Let us have
free plank roads or free MacAdamited
roads free bridgc-a and place as fen- re-
strictions as possible in the wav of our
local trade. This system is full o' fu-
ture promise for Dallas and all other
Texan towns situated as we are. Would
that we could impress the lesson upon
the people.

DALLAS TEXAS; SATURDAY JANUARY 12 187b.
has Governor Throckmorton filled
important positions and bore important
trust at the behest of Texas and to-
day there does not live a man within
her borders or oa the earth we verily
believe who can truthfully .urge a sin-
gle valid objection to the choice we
make on any account ability integrity
or devotion. We know Texas welL
We have carefully studied all her idio-
syncrasies and we can truthfully say
that the qualities enumerated above
always determine her choice and not
mere personal or geographical consids
erations. And in no county are such
qualities more certain of their ultimate
reward.
The only subject of regret to us with
regard to this nomination is that Gov-
ernor Throckmorton notwithstanding
all bis eminence and all the responsi-
ble positions he has filled while it
speaks trumpet-toned for his honesty
and purity is by no means a rich man
and perhaps his private interests de-
mand that he give his business some atr
tention in the future. This we know in-
clines him to reject the nomination
but this iaone of the cases and one of
the junctures where private inclina-
tions and interest must give way before
those of the public and we have most
sadly misjudged our man if he dots not
look at the matter as we do.
It is something in these daysof bargain
and sale with all the wonderful oppor-
tunities presented in congress and out
of it for a public man to be able to
challenge the closest public scrutiny
into his every public act without fear
of a single fact contained in honest his-
tory. This Governor Throckmorton
can do and his friends are proud that
it is so and the people of all Texas ac-
cept it as the best of all possible guar-
antees of an honest administration of
her government if it is coufided to his
care. We thank our Waco friend for
his frank manly and just tribute to our
distinguished representative of the
third congressional district.
Wk are at a loss to find out how the
holding of a non-political office would
disqualify any man from holding a po-
litical cilice. We did not know that
the holding of one political oflice placed
the party in the line of succession for
another. All these things are taught
by Tux Dai I. is Hkkald which does not
think that Mr. Lang the head of a non-
political order should accept a political
i tljcs. Will Tne Herald exclude ttie
body as weil as the head of the grangers
from political otiice? Are a man's po-
litical privileges and righu to hold pub-
lic office impaired by his connection
with a non-poltHcal order? Lastly does
the holding of an otfioe ia the latter
preclude him from holding an office in
the former ? Fart Worth Standard.
Mr. Lang has no signiticj.nce save as
the head of the grange ilia warmest
admirers do not claim anything else for
him. If he is ever governor ot Texas
it will be because he is the grand master
of that order. One of its most loudly
proclaimed tenets is abstai nance from
political icterf'erence as an ordes. "The
force of the principle lies in the applica-
tion on t" as Bunsby would say. Let
the Statuiard make it If a man dis
charges one political trust acceptably
the inference is that he will another.
The head of the ord r is representative.
His public and private acts have more
significance than a private member.
We are proud to say that many of otlr
best officers are unofficial grangers. If
Mr. Lang wants a political office let
him come down to the ranks and rely
solely upon his own merits and not
upon any prominence given him because
of his being the bead of the great farm
era' order in Texas We know enough
of the sentiments of the grange of Texas
to assert that if Mr. L. were to publicly
announce his determination to seek the
nomination for governor he would be
deposed. - .
Tueke are numbers of men of sense
in the north who without understand'
standing exactly how the thing can be
done really believe in the existence of
a determination in the south to force
the government to pay for the slave
liberated for all property destroyed
during the war and to pension the
soldiers of tne confederacy. To uiet
the fears of the careless reader of the
Fourteenth amendment a bill ha been
presented at ttus session of congress
which confers upon the court of claims
all jurisdiction over claims which may
be constitutionally paid and as this
court is wholly made up of northern
men and republicans at that and
most of them radical republicans it is
ikelv the country's interest will be
well looked for after the bill passes. It
is not the south that is trying to re
open questions aauneeted with the war
but agitators at the north.
