I desire to publioly express to seve-
ral friends my profound gratitude for
the kindness they have shown me in
aiding me to obtain an appointment as
a Cadet at the U. S. Military Aoadomy
at West Point.
The honor comes to me immediately
through the houorable gentleman who
is the Representative in Congress of
our people.
Other gentlemen have used their
influence in my behalf. To all these I
tender my sincere thanks; and it is
with regret that I refloot that the dis-
tinguished statesman to whom I owed
the first nomination for the cadetship.
can never on earth receive from me
any evidence of the grateful emotions
whioh he inspired.
I shall hope by my future course to
prove not altogether unworthy of the
confidence whioh my good friends have
shown in me in intrusting to me the
benefit and responsibilities of such an
appointment.

our county sent off eight boarders to
the Huntsvillo hotel. On Thursday
night the Colorado river rose some
four feet must have rained above.
Last Saturday we had a show of fine
stook cattle and a few horses; consid-
ering that the roads are much washed
there was more of a show than could
be expeoted. Next October I suppose
the whisky ring (Bell Punch) will be
fully established.
Query: Will it exercise exclusive
privileges to the dealer or bear hard

It appears that the late Legislature
had more regard for the dogs than the
drummers for while it took the tax
off the first it put it on heavy on the
latter. As the dog tax was appropria-
ted for school purposes the tax on
drummers ought to be employed also
for the generarsohool fund. The poor
children being soon deprived of free
schools they have at least the benefit
of the fleas that the numerous worth-
less ours will scatter and it will keep
the children busy scratching and little
time for young and old to reflect on the
Governor's school veto. Let the
youth grow up in ignorance and in
time we can expect hopeful Legisla-
tures and a larger representation at
Huntsville.

The reader of general literature is
aware that during the past two or three
years there baa been a revival of in-
vestigations or disousaioos touohiug
the nature of mesmerism and animal
magnetism. It must not be under-
stood that mesmerism had been sutler
ed to drop out of human recognition
altogether because it did not appear
on the surface of literature in a con-
spicuous way until the outbreak of tbe
controversies whioh have occupied no
small amount of the attention of soon
men as W. B. Carpenter and A.' It.
Wallace Professor Crookea and oth-
ers because a large number of persons
in Europe and America were mean-
while quietly applying it in different
ways but mainly to the alleviation of
painful ailments and cure of diseases.
Now and tbea some faots would oreep
out but their mysterious nature baf-
fled the scientist and he in his pride
wss disposed to relegate the whole
subject to the domain of ignorance or
charlatanry.
A great deal is. known concerning
the processes and utilities of magnet-
ism but very few praotioal serviceable
treatises have been published and this
notwithstanding the prevailing curiosi-
ty of the publio and a large existing
demand for information.
One of the latest and in every way
the best is a work just brought out by
Messrs. 8. It. Wells & to. ruDiishers
of New York oalled Practical Instruc-
tion in Animal Magnetism. Trans-
lated from the French of J. P. F. De-
leuze. A work of over 600 pages.
A careful examination of this ex-
tensive volume warrants us in saying
that it stands alone among treatises in
print as a clear exponent of the prac-
tical application of magnetism written
by a French physician of extensive
praotice and wide knowledge. It is an
exceedingly careful and minuto account
of the modes of procedure to obtain
the somnambulistio condition and for
the application of animal magnetism
to tho treatment of disease. Dr. De-
leuze's suggestions seem to meet every
oase that is likely to ooour and all the
known pbases.
A hint or two as to the plan of deal
ing with the subjeot in the arrange
ment ot tbe Dook may pornap give
the best idea ot its nature In tbe
beginning the author considers the
principles of magnetism and indicates
the various processes employed in
magnetizing. He next supplies razor-
mation concerning tbe auxiliaries ny
whioh the foroe of magnetism may be
augmented. Next ho treats of som-
nambulism and the procedure of tho
somnambulist. Then he discusses tho
precautions that a patient should take
in choosing a maa.netizer ; further on
the application of maguetism to various
diseases and its association with medi-
cine. He does not overlook the dan
gers of magnetism and bow they may
ha nreven'ed. furnishinc suggestions
on the method of developing and
strengthening the magnetio power in
in one's self and what agents would
aid in the acquisition It must be seen
by the reader from this cursory view
of the points dwelt upon by the auth-
or that the book is the result of no
littlo reflection as well as experience.
The ample Appendix is valuable sta-
tistically furnishing as it does a num-
ber of interesting illustrations and in-
cidents from the experience of Amer-
ican magnctizers and physicians of re-
pute This book will be found of great in-
terest to the general reader and of
special interest to all who are interest-
ed the subjeot. Copies are sent by mail
postpaid on receipt of price $2.00 or a

tents and description will be received
