There is a touchiog story of the fa-
mous Sninuol Jolipson whioh has
had an influence on many a boy who
has heard it. Samuel's father Mich
ael Jolioioo was a poor bookseller in
Litchfjeld England. On market day
he used to carry a package of books tn
the villao of Uttozcter and sell tliem
from r stall in the. market pluee. Oue
day the bookseller was sick sod asked
his son to go aud sell the books in his
place. Samuel from a silly pride-re
fufed to obey.
Fifty years afterwards Johnson bo-
came the celebrated author the com-
piler of the ' English Dictionary" aud
me of t!ie raost distinguished soholurs
in Enoland but he never forgot his
act of unkiodness to his poor hard-
toiling father; so when he visited Utt
osetor he determined to show his sor
row aud repentance.
He went to tbe market place at the
time of business uncovered his head
and stood here for more than an hour
in a pouring rain on the very spot
where the book-stall used to staud.
'This" ho says "was an act of con-
trition for my disobedience to a kiud
father."
The ppcclai'leof the great Dr. John-
son stauding bure-headed in the storm
to atone for the wrong done by him
fifty years before is a grand und touch
ing one; there is a representation of it
(in marble) on the doctor's monument.
Mnuy a man in after life has felt
sou ething harder and heavier than a
storm of ruin beating upon his heart
when he remembered his acts of un-
kindness to a good father or mother
now in their graves.
Dr. John Todd of Pittsfield the
eminent writer never could forget bow
when his old father wus very sick and
sent hint away for medicine he (a lit-
tle lad) had been unwillinjc to go and
made up &. lie that "the druggist hud
not got any such medicine."
Tbe old man was just dying when
little Johnny came io and he said to
niin: "My boy y.our father" puffers
great pain for want of that medicine."
Johnny started in great distress for
the medicine but it was too late. The
father on his return was almost cone
Ho could only say to the weeping boy:
"Love God. and always speak the
truth for the eye of Uod is always
upon you. Now kiss tue once tuore
and farewell."
Through all his after life Dr. Todd
often had a heartache over the act of
falttehtKrd aud disobedience to his d)-
ing father- It take more than a
shower of raia to wash away the mem
ory cf such tint. Dr. Todl repented ;
of that s;a a thousand limes.

By the droppiug out of a sin-
fie letter the Book of Common Pray-
er once went to press with the sen-
tence "We shall a If be changed in
the twinkling of an eye." transform-
ed into "We shall all be hanged in the
twinkiintr of un eyo.'' A poet who
wrote "See the pule martyr io n sheet
of fire" was startled to see his line
chauged into "See the pale martyr
with his shirt on fire." Peihaps t-uch
trangressions are as pardonable as those
sometimes made in other professions
as the story of tbe minister who was
asked to read tho following notice
will show: "A lonu having goue to
sea his wife deairestho prayer of the
church ; and by the misplacing of a
comma in roading it gravely told .the
oongregatiou that "a man having gone
to see his wile desires the pruycrs of
the church."
There are cny number of old. steady
and innocent looking gentlemen in
this city who notwithstanding their
age get up early very early to go tu
market. Their market house is the
