POLITICAL COBBUFTIOX.
Now developments as to the mag
nitudo of the Star routo swiudlos aro
rapidly giving it the proportions of
the inf iimous Whiskey lung of Grant s
second term. It is but rooently tho
administration of Hayes was held up
as a model by Republican partisans.
Yet this Star Contract Ring lived and
moved and had its being right under
his cyo and it is quite impossiblo
that he could not have boon cognizant
of its operations. It moving spirit
was one Brady a trading politician of
Indiana a pet of Grant and Morton.
He was assistant postmaster general
under Key the hitter being his tool
and Dorsey one of his boldest co-
workers. The plan was to get up or
forgo petitions for an increase of mail
service all over tho country raising
the appropriations tc ton or one hun-
dred times thoir former status. Theso
they would by thoir own pcculiur
mothods manipulate through Con
gross the various parties to theso
frauds on the people dividing the
spoils.
It to sUtod that Postmaster Gon
cral Jam os has already saved $400-
(XX) to the country in the lopping off
of useless star routes. AU honor to
him! We trout that Giirflold will
continue to sustain him and not go
back on him as Grant did on Briscoe
in the Whi&kcy Ring investigations.
If ho wore of tho base Btanip of Grant
there would bo a great temptation not
to oontinuo the present investigation
for it is a well known fact that Dor-
sey tho groat star-route thief carried
Indiana for Garfield by tho profuse
expenditure of money most likely de-
rived from these swindlers on tho
pvhhe treasury- After tho election he
received full credit with that result
and was honored with a banquet as a
testimonial to his services. Grant
presided at that dinner and among
the gneeU wcr Hamilton Futh cx
secretary of stato under Grant; Ches-
ter A Arthur Vice' President elect ;
Henry Ward Beerher and other dis-
tinguished Republicans. Grant Ar-
thur and Bcechcr cnlegixod Dorwy
and Lis methods and ths entire
crowd made merry over his fraudu-
lent operations which as well as hi
star routs transactions ought to con
dga him to the pcniUntiary.
Wo rejoice that so far as has yet
appeared the administration is bet-
ter than the modes by which it eatoe
into power and is determined to do
its daty tlx cooiitry.
Personal I'olaU.
Quit inadvertently we failed to
mention in our notice of lust woek
among the editors we met on
the "Sunset" Pr. Yundoll of
die Seguiu Times Ho improMHod
us as one of tlioso frank
outspoken downright men whom wo
ire apt to liko. The following sain
plo of his quality wo clip from his last
woek s issue
Oh for a (rood aetivo liar of two
and twenty or thereabouts."
We wero heniously unprovided at
the Press Association fcu I'm kins
mav lie faster and more artistically
than some of the editors wo mot but
for off hand lying on occasion they
would crowd him. The first good
healthy liar we met was one "who
did not care to make anything out of
his paper just lot it run itself aa he
had other business." He had over
1700 subscribers several years ago
and tho inference was many more
now. He runs a twenty four column
weekly. We wanted to give him tho
cake at onoe but doferred to the
superior judgment and experience of
Bridges until we oould near some
others.
Tho next one we overheard. He
had been running a weekly only five
woeks in a not thickly Bottled county
had not solicited any subscribers and
bad already five Hundred and twenty.
We wore now bent on hearing all
of thom aa it was hard to decide be
tweon those two.
The next one had not been running
very long and in a county where there
was a paper estabusnoa wnon ne com
meneea. He but for some trouble
about not getting his office completed
would have had thoiuaud subscrib
ers. In less than two hours after
words ho tried to borrow a dollar and
a half from us. We agreed that he
took the coke and a large part of the
cake basket.
TUSIIIKGTOI LETTER.
Wasbimotok D. C May 181881
What to most ridiculous seems
most fitting to Republican action just
now and tho resignation of Senators
Conkling and Piatt does not strike
one who has watched the course of
Republican Sonators for two months
past as in any respoct strange. Thoir
re-election or thoir defeat would not
surprise ma Thoir party has boon
kept alive for years upon the actual
payment of money for votes the ex
change of offices for influence an ab
surd affectation of superior virtuos.
Senator Conkling has soon his state
with a clear majority of 50000 for
Hancock throw its electoral voto for
Garfiold and ho knows the influences
which brought that result about and
he thinks ho is.'as much tho master of
affairs now os when ho traded with
his honest Democratic irionds in
Now York city six months ago. Ho
is clearly mistakon. Ho can ruin tho
the Republican party in the Stato of
Now York and in tho country but at
tho beginning of an administration
and against that administration he
cannot control the party. In his
present strange fight with Garfield
and Blaino ho unquestionably has
tho sympathy notwithstanding Lib
personal unpopularity of nearly ov-
ery Republican Senator. Ho will get
the votes of only throe or four on the
Robertson nomination however. It
is patronage that will beat him as it
was simply patronage that causod the
final trouble after Garfield's inaugu-
ration. Of tho final result of the
quarrel thero is of courso no certainty.
An administration is strongest with
its party the first year stronger in
the second than in the third and
woakost in tho fourth unless there is
a chance that the President shall be
reelected. This trouble with Conk
ling whatever its effect may boon
his own future makes a re-election of
Garfield impossible. Tho frivolous
and unworthy subject of the disagree-
ment tho mere application of spoils
to politics are getting to be fatal to
tlio Ronublican party also as well
to the party's chief.
Tho Senate will adjourn tomorrow
or noxt day first confirming Robert-
son and rcioctinj? Chandler. I have
in a previous letter discussed Chand
Icr'a chances of confirmation and bis
fitness for tho position of Solicitor
General- WhUo nothing soomod
to be clearer than the duty of Dom
ocratic Senators to voto against con-
firmation in tlio case I'm told there
were two or more oi mom wno uau
agreed to abstain from so voting.
The resignation of the New York Sen-
ate ira wakes ouuurmationiiniDObsible.
Durinir the last session of Congress
almost every citisen of the District
asked that aome plan be adopted for
the improvement of the river front of
the city.
Two facto are allowed vii: That
tho harbor waa rapidly being destroy
ed and that the health of the District
people congressmen and visitors
was in peril Owing to local dis-
putes as to methods nothing was
done. Tho illness of Mrs. Garfield
again calls attention to the fact; des-
pite what her physicians say alniot
every one bclitves her sickness wholly
or partially due to the malaria which
at taut giving aaningum a uaa rep-
utation among cities. A Senate Com
mitteo has lately enquired into the
subject thoroughly and will make an
official report on the 4th of March
when Mrs. Hancock or some other
equally worthy wife of a Democratic
1-reaxknt shall become the first lady
of the bad. Dm
