iiuraed Ml annual Newspaper Directory for
thirty years or more aud those publications
have been generally recognized as authority
aa to the matttcr of nowxpapor circulation.
In tho regular issues of the Direotory they
have inducted all the newspapers published
in the Unitod Bute and Canada. Quite
reoeutly however thoy have iiwued a cou-
donaed list It give only V bent newspa-

practically better because mora conveuiont
than tbolr larger Directory. Four-flftha of
the newspapers of the United Btatog are
practically "conuted out" by intelligent ad-
vertisers who only want to know the bent.
Ilonce the value of the work nuder notice.
The publishers in the preface well says
"It sifts the wheat from the ohaff. It di-
rects tho attention of an advertiser toward
papers which he should and ought to nso
and tends to intercept a portion of that pa-
tronage which goes to publications which
oost gronlly in exooss of aiiy power to bene-
fit which they possess. It takes the general
grouud that tho best is the cheapest."
We ned scarcely say that on this plan
tho Fbke Pukss is given by this book (see
page 158) as tin advertising medium of 8au
Marcos aud Hays county it being Vte only
one on the lint. We respectfully invite the
Attention of advertisers both at home and

Thoro'e a beautiful valley beyoud eartb'iidin
Where orrow ue.er troubks where couieth

Tbe beautitul valley the valley of reat
There are times as the siiuact sides unfold
Their plitterino; was of crimson and gold
Beyond tho bright glow we catch Juat a
gleam
Of glorios that on its fair shores ever beam.
Aud sometimes we enter that roalm In our
dreams
Acd stray through its meadows and by its
clour streams
Whose tnotioulcss waves'sloop on the green
strand
Tbat shuts earth's sorrows from the mys-
tical land.
All flowers that faded 'ucath winter's chill
bligbt
Bloom there in boauty in that valloy of light;
'1 he loved voices crowu silcut to earth all
ring.
In songs that the angels up thoro evor sing.
And there in its midt most fair to boholil
God's glory enoiroliug the oity of (jold;
The Beloved le ds on through Kurdoiis

The redeemed ouos of earth all robed in
pure white.
Oh when shall I enter that valley of rest
Aud cIiihd my lout joys ouco again to my
brcHHt;
And find all the hopos that have fled from
nio here.
And grasp tbe warm hands of the friends
that aro tlear.
Oh valley of brightness lot just a faint rny
Of thy glory steal down and light tho dark
way;
L"t fall but an echo from sougs of tho blo4
Now curing mo uuward to homo and to

Oh vtilley of blessing jmt here at the gate.

TIIE COSTERMONGER.
ONE
OF THR
DENIZENS
MOST UNCIVILIZED
OF LONDON.
To the Street end Bmrrow Dora Tbe
Bute the Regulator of the Coater't
Famllj Stowed Away at NlgUtInvei-
t taction.
I find the present generation of London
costers as a rule to the manner or per-
haps I should say to the stroct end bar
row born. It is rarely a man thus born
And who has carrlod a "shallow" (a flat
basket)' or shoved a barrow from boy-
hood ever sets ont of the business. He
may rise into s green grocer

SSSSSS
a Sunday suit for hlnisolt and "best
dress" for tho "old gal" we have from
the standpoint of a costermonger a plo-
ture of a thoroughly well-to-do man If
not of opulence itself.
Reliable statistics as to the present
number of London costermongers are un
obtainable but I am satiHlled that an es
tlmate of 00000 adults is below rather
than absve the mark. The coster tins
long enjoyed tho luxury of working his
entire family including his wife. Home
life has no charms for him. Ills home Is
on tho streets and his recroatlon ground
rise In the morning he pushes his anoint
little barrow or spurs his stubborn donkey
on to market and is ready to pick up bar-
gains in fish vegetables fruits nuts or
anything else that can be sold ngaln.
And then the object Is to sell. In this
work he presses into service Ids wife or
female companion for the majority of
costers waivo the marriage ceremony and
all tho children that the school hoard in-
spectors don't snatch from him. The
average coster's idea of his duty toward
his family Is to provide for them on the
lowest scale compatible with keeping in-
I 17 at a distance and work them on
tho hiirheat. Tho stuto. to a large extent.
ls the regulator of the coster's family
Now and again it steps in and compels
him to take charge of his offspring it In
tervenes in his gentle pastime of jumping
on the "old woman" and It captures the
budding costers male or femnlo claps
them ragged dirty uncivilized into a
board school and turns them ont "beau
tiful little scholaros." But tbe state is
'"nrsh and harbltrary" be growls "and
costers 'avo no rights In these days of
board schools street improvements model
tenement 'ouses and tne like. '
Pardon the digression. It la not often
that the stook is closed out even by the
united efforts of the family until long
after dork. There is no evening meal no
cheerful fire awaiting the nomad of Lon
don's thousand miles of streets. He and
his wife have taken their bread and penny-
worth of fried fish hot from tho fish shop
at the top of the court and washed it
down with a pint of "three penny" at the
neighboring pub. The children have
lapped up thoir meals in the same man
ner like Gideon's hosts as they marched
along. And if the night does not end In
gin drinking fuddled heads and perhaps
Jn blows what are the closing scenes!
The whole family tucked away In some
vile cellar or room In what is known as
"Coster's district." The barrow covered

n.ive you ever enjoyed an idligator
huntf If yon have not my experience
may be Interesting llefore starting out
I was told that alligator hunting was an
exciting Hport I found It particularly so.
The other day we chartered a . steam
launch for thp trip. Our party consisted
of live who had never seen an alligator la
his native homo nnd the captain of the
launch who was an old sportsman in al-
ligator bunting. We were armed with
good rifles and had a full supply of am-
munition; Our destination was Lake Cy-
press and Cypress river where reports
said the alligators were plentiful. This
trip across the bike was very fine nnd in
tho course of an hour wo arrived at tho
mouth of Distan canal which connects
tho Cypress lake with Cypress rivr and
Is about ton miles long. It is cut through
a country of rich tropical growth. In aa
hour and a half we reached a smollor
lakn and on tho opiioslte side was tho
wished for Cypress river. Our trolling
line bad resulted In a fine mess of flsh.
Finding a good camping ground wo
landed built a Are aud began coo lng tho
catch which with our other stores fur-
nished an excellent meal.
Wo then pushed our way up the river
and wore soon amoujj tho alligators. The
first we saw was a good sized creature -over
eight feet long and I am not likely
to forgot it for some time. The animal
lay apparently asleep on the bank among
tho tall grass and palmetto bushes. Tlifi
captain raised his rlilo and blazed away.
Ills aim was good and the ball struck the
right eye. 'Instead of making for tho
wator as wounded alligators generally do '
the creature lay quite still. We nil be-
lieved it dead and working tho boat to
shore wo leaped on tho bank with a shout
of victory. One of the party nnd myself
caught tho prize by the tall and endeav-
ored to full It further up tho bank while
wo bailed our companions. Hut the alUV
gator was not dead. With one flip of the
tiill it sent us heels upwards in less time
than It takes to write tho fuct. The rcs$
of the party began to beat a hasty retreat
toward the boat while I was picking my
self up.
A ItUS FOB DEAB LIFE
At that moment the cnptnln shouted tf)
run for dear llfo as we hod "hit a hornets'
nest" The alligator was a .female and
was nursing a nest of young. Tho rest of
the party got safely on the boat but aS I
was nearest the wounded alligator her
sound eyo soon detotted me nnd the chase
began. With wide open mouth bristling
with sharp teeth she made for mo and I
took to my heels. By some means tho aria
Imnl got between the boat and nip and my
retreat was cut oil. I was not long In dis-
covering that I was on a small island
Tho alligator appeared every moment to
grow larger and larger to my distorted
vision. I was fairly cornered and at lost
took to the water forgetting in my fright
tbat an alligator is as formidable In the
water ns on land. As I dashed into tins
river Mrs. Alligator was close npofi me.
I expected every moment-to have those
wldo open Jaws shut about my body.
Thero I stood up to my waist In the river
and within six feet of me was the mad-
dened alligator ono eye running with
blood the other like a burning .coal. ' I
could have shot her easily but found that
my rlilo was not loaded and all my am-
munition was lu the boat.
I was in despair and considering wheth-
er to swim to the boat or club my rifle and
fight when I beard a ri lie crack followed
quickly by nnothcr and the alligator woe
a corpse Tho party then landed built a
a fire and I dried my clothes while tho
others ato their dinner. Bomehow I did
not have much appetite left. We re-em?
barked and started for more alligators. I
did not leave tho boat after that but with
tho rest did some fair shooting. We
killed nine piled aH the carcasses in tbe
row boats behind the launch and took
them down tho rirfr to our first camping
ground. There with an axe we cut oil
all the heads and burled them. They will
bo left in that place until the teeth which
ore valuable rot out when they con be
secured. The captain took off all the
hldos with which wo presented him for
the use of the launch. Klsslmce Cor.
