there may yet be a great outcome in it.

' COL. BOOEKa' SPEECH.
About 2 o'clook Col. 0. M. Rogors was
introduced and took the stand. Tho. snb-
joot of his speech as announced was stock-
raising but he insisted that farming snouiu
go hand in hand with stock-raising. Wo
canuot givo oven an outline of the speech
but only n few rioints. Tho speaker said
he was brought up between tho plow han-
dles; hud roalized an experience of hard
work and poverty in early life. Ho insist-
iin furnmrs should cive thoir families
tho boBt meaus of education in their power
Among these he named newspapers and
magazines. Ten dollars worth of these per
year would ensuio general intelligence in a
family. They woro full of all sorts of valu-
able information from the pons of living
limntliimr man and women. Let the list in
clude a fashion magazine for the wife and
damliters so they might be able to dress with
tnste. aud oratifv that love for the beauti
ful which God had given thorn. "Take my
advice in this" Baid tho speaker "inyest
$ 10 each in the way I have suggested.and if
at the cud of the year you ore not satisfied
with the invostmeut come to me and I will
refund your money." He went on to show
tho lolly of the present system of the ex-
clusive cultivation of cotton which ho il-
lustrated very happily. Some young gen-
tlemen near us were anxious to "call him
out" on the subject of raising small grain
but. were too modest to do so; wo doubt not
he would favor a representation of this sort.
He proceeded to consider the paramount
importance of stock-raising. Said that fine
stock should be made a specialty ffisisted
that cattle sheuld be hotter provided for.
Spoke of the proposed county fair as to bo
located at San Marcos; no other place would
oompare with it for that purpose. He
learned a chartor had boon applied for and
thought the purchase of grounds at San
Marcos was in coatomplatt.on. Advised to
lay aside all local prejudices and unite for
the success of tho movement. Favored the
principle of co operation. Referred to a
$50000 mill which had been built at Den-
ton by subscription ot shares of $5 each
and was proving a fine success. Referred
favorably to the Houston Refrigerator en-
ternrise and advised our people to tako
stock in it &o.
In short Col. Rogors made a good speech
full of sharp and telling points in His
manner of speakintr his Methodist preacher
training seemed to us to crop out quite un
mistakably and we could readily funoy him
marchiug down the aisles at a camp-moeting
calling sinners to repentance amid tho tears
of the sisters aud the omens of tbe storner
sex. But we confess we were rathor "set
back" when in response to on inquiry of
Bro. Bunting as to whether borse-rncing
would be tolerated at the proposed county
fair. Col. Rogers answered jn the affirma
tive and went into a quasi defense of the
custom. To this we must enter our entire
dissent and we trust Bro. Bunting will not
fail to "face the music" with as. We
propose to show at the proper time that it
is a vicious and demoralizing practice es
sentially allied to gambling and having not
the remotest refereuce to progress or im-
provemcnt in agriculture or agricultural
stock raising. This however is not said
by way of disparagement to Col. Rogers;
was in fact the only point be made in which
we did not heartily concur. We regard
him as in general doing excellent work for
our people and as a power for good in the
laud.
We sbonld have said in the start that the
kite of the meeting nndcr notice was Dear

Assembly 'ote(.
We were not half well most of last week
aud wishing to attend the Kyle meeting
had to omit aundry local notes which we
had in view among others some relating
to our Assembly. Beginning in a small way
we are glad to learn tho present session has
steadily grawn in interest and tho favor of
the public as shown in an increased attend
ance. The management have displayed
considerable tortility in devising new at-
tractions. We happened to bo pretent at
tho first camp-fire meeting which prove !
an occasion of novel interest.
Tho sermon Sunday before last was by
Rev. Mr. Luther president of the Baylor
Fomole College at Bolton and was a very
good one In the course of his remarks he
trooed the genosis of our puWio school sys
tem to Martin Luther and the other protest-
ant reformers who devised it pretty much
as we now have it for the benefit of tho
mass of the pooplo who had previously
been kept in ignorance aud hold incapable
and unworthy of education. We hope this
statement relieved the minds of some of our
people who have been stranRoly led to bo-
live that our publio schools were too oa-
spring of infidelity and irreligion
nnrinor the tost week the sessions ot
the Assembly contiuned to grow in Interest
Tho crroat attraction was on Saturday and
Sunday in the discourses of Dr. Winfiold of
Little Rock. He is a favorable sample of
"tbo preachor of the olden time" able.
wittv and eloauent e uttered one senti
ment on Sunday nicht which must have
touched a sympathetic chord in many
heart viz : that through the inflnence and
of women prohibition is yet sure to
prevail. This we steadfastly believe.
C. W. Grerorv. P. J. C. Smith J. E.
Morris and Mr. Reasoner were the first to
stop the Cresset as entered on the tally
sheet of discontinuances by that paper.
Our honest bluff blacksmith friend Mr.
Morris no doubt gave the true reason of all
for stopping. It was not because the pa-
jxt was anti prohibition that it was to be
sufh was a foregone conclusion from the
beginning; but it was because they dis
liked the editor and did not thiuk the paper
worth paying for.
