the night of Tuesday April 20th. to
the night of Mondav April 19. The
change was made in consequence of
Manager Walker suddenly serving
notice from San Antonio that he had
contracted with a show for
that week after he had ver-
bally given the night of the
20th inst. to the McGinties. The
advance agent of the show who is in
town says he made no contract with Mr.
Walker and has given up Mondav
night to the club his show beginning
the following night. The agent was
very genlemanly about it and wanted
to do the fair thing. Mr. Walker's
action is not at all understood and par-
ticularly after his previous agreement
with the club.

We the undersigned chief and as-
sistant engineers of the Southern Pa-
cific company's steamer "Amado-''
with which we have baen connected for
a number of years certify to the etlic-
iency of the Zucker Med col egg in ex-
terminating cockroaches. These pests
have been a great source of annoyance
on board the vessel and nearly every
known remedy has baeu tried with
little or no effect. Several weeks ago
we obtained about hilf a doen of the
above eggs and placed them in the
worst infested part of the vessel. Im-
mediately the insects commenced to
disappear and now these places are
entirely freed from them. We believe
that by using more of the eggs the
insects would be exterminated from
every part of the vessel
Yours respectfully.

point. Mr. Dillon has the backing of
tbe ect're state republican organiza-

An indeppndent democrat was tell-

'Among other things.'" said he "a
great many prople don't know that
Judge Magoffin was an out-and-out
Cleveland gol -bug until th- day of the
historical nomination of William J.
Bryan the man of the people When
the judge read of the almost unanimous
nomination of that illustrutious citizen
to lead the democratic hosts he almost
busted a buttonolT trying togetin line.
Most people whom be knew out seldom
condesended to speik to he would stop
on the street and t -11 them how gld
he was over the g'orious event. He
would be careful tu state he always did
believe in silver. It was both pitiful
and ridiculous to hear him Everybody
knew he was making a dead run for the
colUctorship in cMse. Bryan successful.
But I'll tell you the dear old demago-
gue would have needed tbe assistance
of a horde of machines to straighten
himself out at Washington had Bryan
reached the White House."
'It is really amusing to hear tbe
heelers talk about who and
what they control"' said a democratic
railroad man last night. "Now thera
is one Bendy who. it Is understood has
impressed upon the 'powers that be'
the belief that he has a st?el ring in
the nose of every man that works for
the S P. that he can get their votes
for Morehead's machine ticket for a
few kegs of beer and the persuasive-
ness of his own impressive personality
just like get the Mexican vote for the
silver sheckel. Then there isone Wal-
lace another whose shoulder are
burdened with influence (?) from the
same source. The (ineer thing to me
in the whole aff-tir is tbat though the
democratic mich:ne ba-s always firmly
and decisively rebuked every political
aspiration that has shown itself among
the railroid men these same railroad
men are still bilked into believing the
machine ticket is a 'good thing' and
I needs 'shoving along.' Every railroad
man who has tried for political honors
has got io in the nck hard aud sharp
too. The democratic heelers and all
kinds of political shysters h ive ued
the railroad men as a brickbat to knock
plums off th-i tree. I don't s'ippo-ia it's
necessary for me to tell you I'm against
the machine ticket."
'"Gentlemen you all remember when
we organiz d the El Paso Progressive
association down at the court house
a few years ago. don't you?"
said a democrat to a crowd of
his fllow-s last ni'ht. '"You all
remember that it wis a very enthusi-
astic meeting- aad we were going to
actually do something for the 'own j
Well you all know that in an evil mo-m-nt

'Quien sib. for chief of police: Isaac
Archer for niarht captnii; Ben Ca'.lin
for ci'y secretary and Tom Bendy for
scaveng r is the ticket ligu-ed on If
the machine carries in tomorrow's el--c-fon"
said a laboring man today.
'Archer control the Mexican votes (?)
Catlin has the edge on certa'n gam-
blers and Tm Bendy carries ihe
Southern Pacific railroad shop vo'e in

binations the machine ticket put out
last Monday ought to surely hi sat
upon hard at the polls tomorrow."

s.id a second ward carpenter this
morning "andinwit developes that
Burtou is Foiug to be knifed to save
the h-iid of tbe ticket." The carpenters
should resent this by knifing the whole
machine.
The working men have been wrest-
ling with the two tickets in the field
for several dys and h v at last come
out announcing that they favor any-
thing to beat the ma-jhine and moss-
backism. Judge Magoftin'o friends say he is
going to build an elestrio street rail-
wav. It will bo run on the same plan
as "the San Antonio street belt line.
There will be ample accommodations
on the line for people living al ng the
route to bring in a na'e of alfalfa and
trade it for syrup and sox.
"It has developed that thera was
more in the railroad franchise movr-
ment than was at lirst anticipat-d ."
said a second warder this morning.
'Things have been kept very quiet bui
it has leaked out that there was a 'ben
on' when the machine changed candi-
dates for aldermaa from the first ward.
Of course the franchise will not affect
the first ward but if the machine ticket
should be elected th second ward will
be a nt work of railroads similar to
the railroad map of El Paso as it ap-
beared in the cartoon in the Hekald
last Saturday."
Some people think that Juds-e Ma-
goffin wants to ba elected mayor lie-
cause the salary will he'p him pay the
Chinamen who work in his garden and
orchard.
It is said that some of the custom
bouse force will be out working for the
democratic ticket tomorrow. That's
good. It will serve to make room in
the custom house for good republi-
cans. 'Use the knife freely cut evervthing
out but save the head of the tick-t" :
said the darns' machine b ss to the ward ;
heeler as he started them out to i
begin their last night's work with the j
voters.
I
"Look. Burton and probably Milt j
Robinson will lie ko'fed to the hiltj
tomorrow to save the head of the tick- ;
et" said a democrat this morning.
"Everything will be done by the ma-
chine to save it from defeat."
With the repub'ican vote solid
against Ihem. with the labor vote
against them w th the independent
demo-. ratic vote against them and a
1-ght Mexican vote the machine is
thinking it has not got such a walk over
as it at lirst anticipated. The republi-
can ticket is leading and only deals a jd
a strong knife will save the machine
ticket from defeat tomorrow.
Each machine ward heeler will work
with a club up his sleeve to kill off some
other machine heeler who has grown
too prominent io machine polities.
They will knife etch other as well as
knife the machine's candidates for
aldermen to save the head of the tick-
et. George Wallace's partner may not
be able to t!e;tver the goods he prom
ise i George if he would come to El
Paso and op.n up a joins office holding
law office.
'The arguments of tho machine
candidate's triends is that tbe m ichioo
ticket is composed of heavy tax payers.
Tne wot king pe pie want to get a
chance to vote f-jr men who are not
heavy tax payers and see if it won't
nave the way to make soma tax payer
in their ovn ranks. The heavy tax
payer has been running the city too
long and the laboring man wants to
get a chance at the wheel" said a la-
borer this morning.
