AX UNFOUNDED RUMOR.
Much Excitement Caused by a Repirt
that Caples and OToriunra
were Killed.
A report was circulated around the
city yesterday that Dick Caples and
John O'Connor had been killed down
atCasas GranJes. The Herald re -
porter followed the cose up and it
dwindled down to a point where it said
that Caples aud U Connors were in a
shooting scraps with other parties but
were uninjured.
This morning the Herald reporter
found one of Mr. Caples' men who had
just come io from the front wbo said
be was wi'h Mr. C-iples yestfrday
morning at 8:30 at San Ppdro acd there
was no trouble at the canto and tha'. all
tbe men had been paid off and left. He
said Caples was goirg-to Casas Gracdes
tbat day. The train going south passes
San Pedro at 5 o'clock and arrives at
Casas Grandes at 6:41. There are no
houses at San Pedro and nn people live
nearer thau five miles off the siding
but there is a telegraph office there and
word would have been Sf-n io imme-
diately if anything bad happsned.
Last nig'it tbe train dispatcher of
tbe Com-litos route Mr. S. E. Leon-
ard sent word to this side of the river
to Mr. Caples familv that there was no
truth in tha report of Mr. Caples being-
injured. The story probably originated over
the fact that at a mine near Casas
Graades yesterday three men got into
a dispute and a shooting followed wbich
resulted in the deals of one of the par-
ties implicated. This was probblv
telegraphed in and some party indus-
triously circulated the report that
Messrs. Caples and O'Connor were in
the fight; thus frightenirg the?e rr ens
fam lies and relatives to such an extent
that they were thinking of going to
the front and seeing what really was
the matter.
Tim L)oo who is a brother-in-law
of Mr. Caples came in from the front
last night and knew nothing of tbe
trouble out there and did not believe
anything had occurred.

The County Election.
Not one person in one hundred knew
that there was to be a county election .
today. It was advertised according to
law in "tbe official newspaper." But
the said "newspaper" reaches so few-
people that the town generally did not
know there was to be an election of
! any t'no. xnis snows tne Deauty ol
. cbosing an advertising medium that
j h3 DO circulation and which very few
people ever Si e or thin k of.
Thre was no balloting at all in ward
1 as V. W. Mills the presiding judge
at the last election is absent from
town and tbe tally sheets left with Al-
derman Scott were not opened. In .
ward 2 there were just seven votes cast
by 1 p. m. and tbe judges were puzzled
to know what to co with themselves.
In ward 3 there were just five votes by
1. p. m. and in ward 4 the polling -place
could not be found. Samuel
Schutz said he bad spent some time in
trying to locate it but bad - been un-
successful. No one in at Slack's could
tell where it was and along San Fran-
cisco street no one could tell; and even .
one of the ward 4 judges at the last
election declared he did not know.
The proclamation said :
Now therefore. I James R. Harper .

ty Texas in pursuance to the said or-
der of the commissioners' court afore-
said do hereby order an election to b9 "
held on the 6th day of July A. D. 1897
to determine whether there shall be .
levied upon the Droperty within the
county of E! Paso by said commission-
ers court a road tax of fifteen cents on
tbe ona hundred dollars worth of pro-
perty of said county in accordance
with the constitution and laws afore
said.

Two prominent citizens on an errand
of mercy down Utah street this morn-

women of the baser sort as they

citizens with difficulty rescued them-
selves. Quite a number of Christian Endea-

northern routes will return east via
