Supt. War J on the Coal Question.
Supt. Ward of the coal department
ai xiiarojr oi tne xexs A; r'acilic ar-
rived yesterday from the east ar.d is
iu toA'n for a uay or two. Mr. Ward is
bav:ug no trouble with his men on ac
count of the big strikes up north and
in ine easi. Uu tbe contrary his svm
patbies ari rather with tne men for
ne sayo their wages bave b en cut so
that in ma-iy places alia mau can earn
is six bits per day sj-nd only three cents
is at tbe disposal of a housekeeper to
feed ner laimiy on fur eae-h meal. So
it bas corne to be a questieu of strike or
starve. Competitiou is ihe occasion of
th.s as tbe operat ors have been cuttinc
under each oth ir :o get business; and
lusieau ui cuttiag on tne pronts they
cut tbe decrease oil" tne men's wages.
Mr. Ward said bis men would gen-
eraily average $2 per day so there was
uo c jmpiuiuc as to tbe company s store
the operatives were able to buy there
cheaper tuan tbey could elsevrhere as
was evidenced by tbe fact that people
declined to trade at stores some dis
tance away as it was cheaper to trade
at the coal company's store. The
present output is from 500 to 800 tons
per day witu about 1200 operatives at
wora-. AO there was no kick corainir
from that quarter and tbe trouble that
occurred about a year ago was oc-
casioned by aa agitator who was fired
out of the country. Mr. Ward thought
that the opouing up of the Salado coal
rields in souttieasteru Xew Mexico
would result in the Tnurber coal b-jiua-
shut out of this market on account of
the oOO miles haul for the Texas coal
The T. iSc P. coal department was
starting iu to imke brick as there are
extended and hue deposits of the best
cia in tne immediate vicinity and
there is every prospect for securing a
desirable market.

THE IMPORT i XT QUESTION.
The scientists have stuiied o'er dis-
tinctions wondious fine
Concerning the four seasons and the
equinoctial line
They bave called in mathematics to
discover past a doubt
When summer comes in smiling and
capricious spring goes out.
But the roses nod disdainfully and sun-
beams laugh in scorn
At these labored calculations whose re-
sults a-e so forlorn
For they know as well as we do that
the true transition mark
Is the signal from the drummer for the
music in the park.
For the blossoms erlanca but coyly and
the trees withhold the shade
Which will bend in soft luxuriance
when the opening number's played;
And the birds are but rehearsing for
the welcome they wiil sing-
Ween the bandsmen take their places
to eclipse the carroling.
They're waitin? for the trombone's
bas. the piccolo so shrill
The warble of the clarinet the flute's
ecstatic trill
Nature hal's to join the chorus and
impatiently we bark
For the signal from the drummer for
the mnsic in the park.

Benito Juarez belongs the credit of
promuiwat.ng the reform laws of Mex
ico which are proving o beneficials to
the peoole of that re public. His mem
ory is reerved by rich and poor alike.
Aithi-ugh Uemto Juarez wsa a pure
ilex;can. his grea'.ness did not lie in
his prowess in wur but in his ability
as a statosrran. He wus far ahead of
che times and marked the path for a
great southern republic.
Orrin'9 circus will show in Juarez
this wrek beginning Thursday the 22
and coutiuuiug every niut until Sun
t"i?-f& Uh-ZSsi vte&7
day when two 'shows will be given af
ternoon and nigbt. People snouid not
mistake Orr n'e circus for a common
Mexican circus. Orrin brothers are
old and experienced showmen and
have built up one of the finest cir-
cuses in Mexico and in getting tog-ether
the troupe some of the finest attrac-
tions of the United States and Eu ope
are employed. Orrin's circus remains
in the City of Mexico during the win-
ter and spring and travels through the
repub'ic duringthe summer and fall.
The attractions are of the highest or-
der and minus the managerie the
show is as good as any of the larger
circuses that travels through this coun-
try. There are no fake side shows and
sure thing games with the circus.
The telegrams sent in by the Big

The removing of politics from the
present fire department has caused a
ho xl to go up from the old politicians
who always used the department as an
entering wedge to olhie. One by one
the srokes are being knocked out of
the El Paso Boss' wagonette.
"MITCH" AFTER A DIVE.
Justice Rridgers has moved his

power behind the tbrone.
For several days pjsttue dance hall
