It would b9 well for the officers to
keep a strict watch cn the da-ice halls
ad see that they are carried on in a
legal manner. A gentleman reported
last night that a number of voung boys
have begun frequenting these places of
late and cut up all kinds of capers at
the dances. The old hardened sinners
who frequent the dance halls cannot be
injured by the company they come in
contact with at such places but it is
the b ys who become regular actnd-
ants of the dives who may have their
lives marred or who mny commit some
broach of the pca'-e that would put
them under - the bin of decency all
the balance of their days. It would b
well for the police to chase all young
boys out of such places.

Dawson N. W. T. .Tune 23 1897.
"My Dear Mother: We landed here
about two weeks ago and as tha first
steamer is going to leave tomorrow I
hasten to write to you. We had a very
pleasant trip down the river. At most
places the river was high and the cur-
rent swif l. I stood at the sweep for
3(5 hours. The last 200 miles we ran
without a stop and never rowed just
lloated. Ninety-six miles were run io
14 hours. We called our boat Il'inois.
Had a name at least and she waa gtod
boat for she ran th rapids like a duck
never took any water but we bad her
covered with canvass when we ran the
Grand Canyon. It is J of a mile long
and we ran it in less than 3 minutes
MaDy lost their outfits there because
they did not understand how to manage
a boat in swift water.
"There is no t'me to meditate but
act at the instant tnd keep cool and
don't get excited or one may knock
asrainst the wall and break his boat.
No lives were lost on the rive- this
trio but one was drowned on the Klon-
dyke this morning by trying to row a
boat and fell in. One man was killed
by bis companion ac: idently. A sub-
scription paper was circulated and $3.-
500 was raised for the widow.
"I will not go to Circle City but will
stay here in Dawson as nearly all of
Circle City has moved here. The min-
es have' turned out much better than
was expected. Some claims took out
from $150000 to $200000 It don't
look possible but I have so much gold
here now that a few thousands is but a
little sum. Some have their dust in
sacks and biking powder cans pi'ed to
the ridge pole of tbeir tens others put
it in 50 gallon oil cans. About 3J tons
of cold will leave on the first two boats
"One young man who came here the
tame time i did (last year) naa cot
pnouirh money to buy his winter's grub
It required eight men to bring his go'd
down from the mines last week. Some
panned out over SOO to a pan (that is
about two sbovelluis.l i. wo men snov-
el?d in $20000 in one day. I saw where
two men who were freighting down
to Circle City last winter cleaned out
lOOoz or $1i00 for four days work. 1
enclose a small nugget with quartz
which I took out of the paD they had
the dust in.
"Wages have raissd to $15 per day
That is what I have beeu getting. 1
was offered $400 a month to work with
the pack train but 1 want $450 or I will
do something else for summer. There
will be plenty of work and I have no
doubt they will py more than that this
winter.
"I have the promise of a lay on a good
claim for this winier and if I can get
enough men 1 will have some of the
yellow metal mt self next spring. The
claim that 1 loc'tted last winter com-
ing out has done nothing but a half in-
terest in a c:aim eight claims bjlow it
sold for $1000 last winter as we were
going out and it is estimated that $1-
000.000 wiil b : taken out-f it. I would
not believe it myself until I saw how
rich those mints were. There is no
doubt it has no equal on the American
continent tod:y.

ber or October delivery.
Stockman: The Ariz na' cattle feeder
who joins some other ration to alfalfa
is the man who will most quickly fat
the best beef. Alfalfa is sweet and
nutritious but a little Lay and a little
sorghum and a bait or so of beets will
help.
Williams News: C. J. Babbitt shipped
12 carloads of cattle from Ash rork to
Kansas City Thursday and Cattlemau
Shafer sent away several cars. Mr.
Bibuiit returned to Williams today to
make a shipment from this point.
Bisbee Orb: Selling off the cattle
recklessly for years ha had its natural
results and far sighted buyers see a
reign of scarcity ahead. It is all very
nice to have big fat steers predomina.e
in a herd but it is an anatomical
impossibility to produce calves fiom
steers. Cattle will be cattie for some
time to come and there is bound to be a
scarcity until by natural increase
tbe deficiency ol mother stocic is
supplied.
Stockman: Up oa the Verde three
years ago a cattleman became disgusted
with the business and sold his brand at

the succeeding season even at the
low prices near.y returned the pur
chaser his money; through tne sale of
the steers alone and now no has a tidy
bunch of cattle in prime condition and
several thousand dollars more than
the purchase price "to the good."
