to 921348318 or an average of over
one million dollars per day.

Today Texas is celebrating' the an-
niversary of the declaration of inde
pendence of the Texan republic March
2 1836. It is the day in Texan history
which the equivalent of 4th of July in
national history.
The project to buy Cuba from Spain
can be allowed to eluinber without Iocs
to the United States until the naval
commission now sitting on the case
of the 6inkintr Maine reports. Tbe
commission may point out a better
method of freeing Cuba than by a pur
chase.
The cause of f rte coinage is not be-
iog materially improved by the trifl-
ing fact that gold is coming into the
country in large quantities at New
York San Francisco and other ports
and that the gold in circulation dur
ing the year has increased more than
$30000000.
The calamity wails of Mr. Bryan
and his friends will scarcely be appre
elated in his own city Omaha where
it is just announced that a $2000 char
ity fund has been on exhibition for the
relief of the needy for a whole month
and there have not been a sufficient
number of applicants in that time to
absorb it.
Mexican sliver dollars which on
January 1 1891 were worth 83.7 cents
are today worth 45.5 cents. United
States silver dollars which on January
1 1891 were worth 100 cents are worth
today 100 cents. That is the difference
between free coinage and the system
now in use in this country and which
the republican party is unwilling to
exchange for that under which Mexi
can dollars have fallen nearly one-half
in value in seven years' time.
That accurate barometer of busi
ness bank clearings continues to show
a marvelous improvement io coodi
tions. The total bank clearings in the
United States for the week ending
February 19 were $1524588524 against
$1214728997 for the preceding week
and against $955' 35. 768 in the cor
responding week of the preceding year.
This is a gain of 60 per cent last week
over the business for the correspondiog
week of the precedirg year.
In appointing Mr. Dillon to the col-
lectorsnip the president has followed
the wishes of the voters of the republi-
can party and the principle of local
self government is vindicate!. For the
post office ninety per cent of tbe peo-
ple republicans and democrats re-
quested the appointment of J. A.
Smith. The voice of the politician has
been louder than the voice of the peo-
ple and by a series of compromises
among the politicians Mr. Campbell
was appointed. The people expect a
business administration in tbe post of-
fice and will see that th?y get it or
their voice will be heard from here to
Washington.
The London Statist one of the
ablest and best known financial jour-
nal in the world says "If Mr. Bryan is
elected in 1900 and if a silve-ite con-
gress should be chosen a panic would
follow more severe than has been wit-
nessed in any part of tbe world for a
very long time." To which the Globe-
Democrat adds that of course is tbe
judgment of an overwhelming majority
of persons in the United States also.
In fact Bryan himself in 1896 acknowl-
edged that bis election at that time
would precipitate a panic but he said
it would toou end. The fact that near-
ly everybody believes Bryan's election
would have this effect is the chief
reason wby neither he nor anybody
who represents Bryaniam can ever be
president j

Praises Our Bailroads.
The Ijondon Times has just conclud-
ed the publication of a series of articles
on American railroads in which its
correspondent has bestowed unstinted
praise upon their equipment and
punctuality as a contrast with the
oabitual tardiness in England. The
Times correspondent thinks the Amer-
ican excellence is due to one man con-
trol. Commenting on these facts the
Times urges English railroad men to
take a lesson from America abolish
the absurdly weak locomotives and
also increase the size of the trucks.
Continuing the Times says: "As to
the one man puwer we do not s-hare
our correspondent's enthusiasm. It is
all riitht when tbe man is a good man;
but many an unfortunate English in-
vestor has bitter teason to regret boss
control."

Those Dreadful Sores

Healed -A Wonderful Work.
"For many years I have been a great
sufferer with varicose veins on one of my
limb9. My foot and limb became dread-
fully swollen. When I stood np I could
feel the blood rushing down the veins of
this limb. One day I accidentally bit my
foot against some object and a sore broke
out which continued to spread and was
exceedingly painful. I concluded I
needed a blood purifier and I began taking
Hood's Sarsaparilla. In a short time
those dreadful sores which had caused
me so much suffering began to heal. 1
kept on faithfully with Hood's Sarsapa-
rilla and in a short time my limb was
completely healed aud the sores gave roe
no more pain. I cannot be too thankful
for the wonderful work Hood's Sarsapa-
rilla has done for me." Mrs. A. E.

Biggest Waiting1 Room.
The New York Central is expending
SoOO.000 on the tirand Central station
to New York and when the work of
reconstruction is completed the wait
ing room will be the largest in any
railway station in tbe world. This
room will be 200 feet long by 100 feet
wide and 50 feet in height. All the pas-
senger and baggage business of three
roads is to be transacted in it. It will
occupy nearly all the space at the
south end of the present train shed.
The entrance will be in Forty-second
street through a foyer 45 by 35 feet.
There are to be two rooms for women
oae 34 feet square and ithe other 30
feet by 20 feet. Just off the rotunda
there is to be a general waiting room
80 by 30 feet. A smoking room 59 by 30
feet is also provided.
Tbe biggest Chicago waiting room
would merely occupy one corner of
this i-pace. In fact tbe waiting
rooms of nearly all tbe railways that
run intJ Chicago Boston Philadel-
phia! is Bulfalo if put together would
ot occupy much more space than the
new one nearing completion. In order
to enable passengers to get direct to
tbe tiaios without passing through the
rotunda access will be had through the
preseot incoming station on the east
through a vesiibute ten by eight feet
and from the west in Vanderbilt ave-
nue through a foyer 65 by 31 feet. Tbe
new station will be five stories high
and the entire structure is to be fire
proof. Nineteen trains can occupy the
shed at one time.
For Sweet Charity.
For the first time on record a dram-
atic representation is to be given
within tbe walls of a Catholic cardi-
nal's palace. The announcement is
made that at the request of the Catho-
lic Social Union the general commit-
tee of wbich include many members
of the nobility Sir Henry Irving has
consented to give esrly in May next a
presentation of his play "'The Water-
loo Veteran" at the a-chbishop's
bouse in Westminister the residence
of Cardinal Vaughan. The cardinal
has given bis consent to the pro-
gramme and will bimself be present on
the occasion. The affair will take
place in the large reception room at
the palace where seats will be provided
for 350 people. The price of the tick-
ets which will be issued to private
subscribers only has been placed at
ten pounds each so that the perform-
ance will net the charity the magnifi-
cent sum of $17500. Sir Henry Irving
will be assisted by Miss Ellen Terry
and the members of his company who
usually take part in the presentation
of "The Waterloo Veteran."
