General Passenger Agent Turner of
the Texas & Pacific is a wioe awase
man and has by no means forgotten
this ena c.f the lice evtn if it is a long
distance from Dallas. He is about to
improve the car service by putting a
chair car oa between Fort Worm and
El Paso and is to make a special
feature of advertising the town in the
new folders the road is getting out
each month. Mr. Turner has arrang-
ed with Dr. Yandell to give El Paso an
extended write-up and if aoy one is
able to do tbas with easy grace it is
Dr. Yacdell. O-ie solid page of the
last folder gotton out by the T. & P.
passenger department is given to El
Pa o; and not merely from Mr. Turner's
words but from his acts is is evidtnt
that in the 1 & P. El Paso has an ap-
preciative friend.
Mr. Turner is in correspondence
witi connecting -lines relating to the
Sunset Limited and rather thiuks that
the servicemay continue until May 1.
The tran has proven a marked suc-
cess and will .certainly be cont:nued
another season. While the rush west-
wards has decreased eastern people
will shortly bein turning iheir fac-s
boiueward and the eastbouud Subsets
will bo heavily patronized. Mr. Tur-
ner says the increase ofjpaaseoger busi-
ness over the T. & P. generally has
been very marked and the promises
for the future are encouraging.
Ban Away.
Louis Hammer and John Caldwell
started down North Oregon-street today
from wnere they were working on Mr.
Atonsttin's new residence in Mr. Hum-
mer's business waoa. Suddenly the
horse took fright and ran away. Mr.
Hammer guiued him as best he could
across the S. P. trajk ad down past
the federal building to Texas street.
But seeing that the animal was beyond
coutrol Mr. Hammer turned him di-
rectly into tue Cui-rie block against
which the whole outfit went to smash.
The two men were thrown out and
the wagon frame broke in two while
the horse lay kicking his harness 10
pieces in the wreck. Help speedily
came and Mr Hammer kw found to
nave escaped with a badly jammed and
cut right hand. But Mr. - aid well was
not so fortunate. His left arm ws
disloca. ed anl fractured near the
wris;. He was assisted quickly to
Pollard & Kel y drug store and then
10 Dr. Justice's oliije where his in-
juries were attended to Mr. Hammer
said he turned the horse into tbe budd-
ing as he was beyond his control and
thought that was the best thing to do.
Tfce animal t scaped ii-juries of any
account.

Fruit Sained.
E. Stanhope a veteran Michigan
fruit raiser has been examining the da-
mage done by yesterJay morning's
cold snap and finds that all the fruit
in tbe lowlands have been nipped by
the frost ana are gone "see Here"
he said to a Herald representative
today cutting otr-wuh his knife a num
be- of apple and peach buds from pick-
ings he held in his hand. See thos
black centers in the stem immediately
beneath the buds? Well tha nerve of
the incipient fruit has been killed
by the frost and although the
buds and blossoms may look all right
now they are dead to a certainty. 1
have been down a-nong the orchards
and find the fruit as far as it i out is a
failure. But this is only in the low
lands. Up on the high lands the frost
did not go and the fruit there is safe.
Up in Michigan we never think of set-
ting out fruit on the lowlands it is al-
ways high up."
Mr. Stanhope feared that the extent
of tbe damage was greater than was
expected.

the facts of the Maine disaster to ao in-

that if tbe American government re-

The immense sweep of American
naval preparations for war has im-
pressed tbe European statesmen and
it is now rea'ized that the United
States are getting ready to dal with
Spain without asking permission of
any rtber government in spite of the
boasting of the Spaniards and the
thrrats of the Spanish press. The re-
ports made by Spanish naval com-
manders to the Minister of Marine
show that it will be impossible for
Spain to send a rquadron across the
Atlantic which could arrive on tbe
American coast with any coal on
board.

wing of congress. The object of the
president in inviting these two mem-
bers to a conference was to fully out-
line bis policy to them and to learn
from them the sentimentof the senate.
The prrs'dent was told that a majority
of the senators favor Cuban independ-

sentiment for direct intervention. No
attempt would be made to force bis
hand. Senator Gormai sid un'es it
should appear that his policy lacked

congress and the American peiole At
the first sign of weakness Mr. Gormai
added congress undoubtedly would
relieve the president of further respon-

Holland's New Invention.
John P. Holland tbe inventor of tbe
subma-ini wonder beiring his Dime
has a new kind of torpedo-b -at whi'-h
has been highly approved by the
United States government. It is a
submarine torpedo-boat which can
with impunity stand up against the
biggest battle-ship afloat and setd it
to the bottom with dynamite or a tor-
pedo. .
Inventor Holland's plan calls for a
ship about 220 feet long with a speed
of twenty-five knots. It will have a
turret with 15 or 16 inch am or or as
heavy as desired. The turret will have
several rapid-fire guns and will be the
only point the opposing ship of war can
attack-.
All the rest if the ship will be sub-
merged about 5 feet deep enough to
be safe from any projectile. In tbe
bow and stern nd if nenesiary on nirt
and starboard tbe torpedo bo it will be
cupplied with dynamite guns and tor-
pedo tubps.
