THE JEWISH MONITOR
Friday September 24 1920.
Anti-Defamation League Acts
An all day meeting attended by
representatives of the Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis the Coun-
cil of Jewish Women- the Executive
Committee of the B'nai B'rith and
the Governing Board of the Anti-Defamation
League was held in Chicago
Sunday September 5th lasting until
11 p. m. The Central Conference of
American Rabbis was represented by
Drs. Leo N. Franklin Felix A. Levy
and Jos. H. Stolz. Mrs. M. L. Purvin
represented the Council of Jewish
WoTen. The following members of
the Executive Committee of the B'nai
B'rith and of the governoring board
of the Anti-Defamation League were
in attendance: Adolph Kraus Juijge
Samuel Rosenfield Professor Gotthard
Deutsch Rabbi Eugene Mannheimer
Sigmund Livingston Judge Philip
Stein Julius H. Meyer Dr. Gerson B.
Levi Dr. A. D. Weiner A. B. Seelen-
. freund Leon L. Lewis Dr. Harry A.
Kraus Henry Monsky Gustavus Lo-
evinger and Hiriam D. Frankel.
A complete report showing the pres-
ent status of Anti-Semitism in Euro-
peon countries and in the United
States was presented by the Secretary
of the League together with a state-
ment in detail of the various steps
already taken to counteract the effect
of the vicious Anti-Jewish propogan-
da now being carried on in this coun-
try. A program designed to mitigate
so far as possible the efforts of those
who are endeavoring to stir up racial
animosity was adopted and the various
steps already taken by the executives
of the League were approved. The
committee had before it for examina-
tion the Dearborn Independent arti-
cles as well as articles from other
magazines and newspapers of a sim-
ilar nature several Anti-Semitic
books recently published- one contain-
ing nearly five hundred pages written
by an eminent historian in which the
Jew is blamed for the failures of the
Peace Conference another being a
new version on "The Proctocols" de-
fiimed for American consumption and
containing one hundred and fifty pa-
ges of garbled quotations from Jew-
ish authors intended to demonstrate
the authenticity of the document nu-
merous magazines articles and news-
paper clippings and a complete set of
the material emenating from the Eng-
lish Anti-Semitic Bureau as published
in The New Witness National Re-
view The London Times Moming
Chronicle The Spectator and other
English publications and as reprinted
in the American and Canadian press
v as presented to the committee for
examination.
The following resolution was adop-
ted: Whereas it has been ascertained
that a publication known as "The
rroctocols" containing a vicious hoax
intended to arouse hatred and preju-
dice against the Jew in the United
States has been given wide distribu-
tion in this country as well as in Eu-
npean countries; and
Whereas we have learned that cop-
ies of that publication have been sent
to public libraries newspaper offices
members of congress governors of
States mayors of cities and other
public officials throughout the Unit-
ed States; and
Whereas such literature may. if left
unaswered create a condition entire-
ly unfair and unjust to three million
patriotic law-abiding Jewish citizens
of the United States in spite of the
obvious fictltiousness of the attack
and the general reputation of Ameri-
can public officials for intelligence
and fairness;
Therefore Be it Resolved That we
the duly appointed and authorized
representatives of the Anti-Defamation
League Council of Jewish Wom-
en Central Conference of American
Rabbis and the Independent Order of
B'nai B'rith do hereby express our
sorrow at the unprecedented move-
ment now in progress a movement so
un-American that we are loath to be-
lieve that it emanates from American
sources or that it can weaken to any
great extent the religious and racial
tolerance of our felloW-Americanjs.
Nevertheless we believe that the ef-
ficient propaganda methods used by
the enemies of Judaism in this coun-
try who are apparently backed by
large capital may give an entirely
false and erroneuos impression of the
true standing of the Jew in the Unit-
ed States and that it is our duty to
take all proper measures to answer
in as efficient a manner as lies with-
in our power the slanderous charges
now being circulated; and
Be it further resolved that the
Anti-Defamation League which for
seven years has been dealing effect-
ively with all exhibitions of Anti-
Jewish discrimination in this country
and which by its conservative proce-
dure has secured the confidence of
American Jewry in its ability and
power to handle tactifully and cour-
ageously every situation which has
arisen be commended for the steps
already taken in off-setting the de-
famatory propaganda of our enemies;
and
Be it further resolved that the
League continue its activities by giv-
ing the widest publicity to the truth
concerning the Jew and that as one
of the means to this end articles by
leading historians and educators clem-
onstrating to the non-Jew the slander-
ous character of the propaganda now
being carried on by our defamers and
the base motives of those who are at-
tempting to create Anti-Semitism in
the United States be sent to those
who are receiving the Anti-Semitic
literature."
Thereupon Professor Gotthard
Deutsch of the Hebrew Union College
was authorized to select a committee
of which he shall be Chairman com-
posed of men of recognized authority
regardless of religious creed to an-
swer the false charges emanating
from tho A nil Semttis r'ique and
publish the same from time to time
in pamphlet form. Professor Deut'h
thereuprp on ho!ialf 'f the Antl De-
famation League presented an article
prepared by him exposing the hoax
which is being foisted on the Ameri-
can public in book known as "The
Proctocols." It was ordered that the
article be published and distributed at
once. It was also decided that when
the scries of articles is complete that
they may be published in book form.
