President Ripley Talks.
E. P. Ripley president of the Atchi-
son Topeka & Santa Fe gave much
additional Information concerning the
plans of hi road and settled so far as
possible several mooted questions says
a San Francisco dispatch.
As regards a positive decision as t)
the Santa Fe optica with the Valley
road Mr. litpley aid:
"A decision has practically been
reached already through the action of
our directors but will be confirmed at
the annual meetloff of stockholders to
take plsce at Topeka on December 8."
"When and bow will the Valley road
stock nolder. who have already placed
their siock la escrow be paid?"
"They will be paid on or before Jan-
uary 1 in cash. Those who have not
already come in representing about
2400 shares will be allowed a reason-
able length of time In which to deposit
their shares but the offer will not bo
held open indefinitely.
"We are compelled by positive agree-
ment to pay all stockholders who come
in before January 1 full pr value for
their ic'.
"Should any of the stockbold ?rs de-
cide to put tbelr stock in escrow they
will hold It as if we had not come into
the matter at all and get dividends on
it if any are earned. Their stock
will not be consolidated with ours in
any event in other words so far as its
stock is concerned tne Valley road
must always remain a separate organization."
"How about your proposed arrange
ment with the Southern Paciao for
the use of its tracks between Mojave
and HakersQeld?"
"Nothing has been determined as
yet. It U still in the air with propects
against it. 1 do not even know when
it wilt be further considered. "
"Have you come to any conclusion as
yet in regard to your terminal facili-
ties?" "I have examined the whole bay and
water front on both sides but am not

affair for some time to come.
Tbe Pooling Business no Good
"I would like to see the supreme
court of this state abolish the pooling
system" said a railroad official yester-
day. "The supreme court of New
York deemed some time ago mi puui-
ing was illegal and abolished it in the
suite. It would give all oi us a Deiter
chance if we were free from the re
striction imposed upon by the laws or
this combine. I might say that the
laws are unreasonable in the extreme
a may ai verse circumltances confront
us In conducting the passenger end of
our road which cannot' be overcome
without conflicting with ' the laws of
the combine. I do not think that you
oan find a dozen rauroaa-tomciais in
the state of Texas who -.favor a con-
tinuance of the combine." y
Surprised Their. Friends.
Clay Wall an old-time' engineer on
the G. H. and Miss Carrie Baker re-
turned from La Luz yesterday man
and wife. La Luz is tbe home of Miss
Baker and she went the -a about a
month ago on a visit. A week ago Mr.
Wall made a visit there and neglected
to tell his friends for what purpose he
was going. Some of the boys say that
they bad an idea but did not express it
and nothing more was thought of the
matter until yesterday when they re-
turned united in marriage. The bride
and groom have many warm friends in
this vicinity to wish them tbe best of
everything in future life.
Sparks Front the Engine.
With all the passenger' trains we
have entering 1 Paso none of them
arrive after night. t
T. J. Lattner is switching in the
t bgin work this evening.
The expert is expected from California
and bis duty will be to arrange tne
machinery lor tne new plant which is
intended to purify the water used by
the G. H. on this end of the line.
Word has been received at the offi
ces of the Mexican National railway to
tbe effect that frrm this date United
States health officials from tbe marine
hospital department will be on all pas
senger trains between baitiuo ana
Laredo. No trains stop at Monterey
and doors and windows are locked
while passing through that city.
There is no danger ef fever or delay
to nassenpers from this city and it is
expected that the quarantine will soon
be raised as Information bas been re
ceived that tbe fever is rapidly dying
out. Two Republics.
THE NEW SHERIFF.
PEYTON J. EDWARDS COUNTY ATTORNEY.
Boone Will Take Hold Tuesday If
There Is no Hitch District
Clerk's Deputy.
Sheriff elect Boone will probably be
indicted into office next Tuesday. He
will receive his certificate of election
from County Judge Harper Monday
and as Frank SimmonB is very anxious
to turn over the office to his successor
there will be no unnecessary delay
about tbe matter.
It has not yet been announced who
will be Boone's deputies but it is un-
derstood that Jim Dwyer will get tbe
position as jailor formerly held by J.
C. Jones and there is a strong tip out
that deputy sheriff -Ten Eycfc will not
be removed from his present place.
He is perfectly efficient and thoroughly
familiar with tbe routine work of the
sheriff's office.
It was semi-officially announced be-
fore the primaries were held that no
matter which of the two candidates
for district clerk was elected Miss
Mattie Ba'rlow wouldjretaln her pres-
ent position as deputy.
Alderete will be compelled to em-
ploy a deputy who understands bow to
properly conduct the intricate business
of the office wh'oh requires
great care and skill and Miss Barlow's
many friends among the legal frater-
nity and other citizens would most
likely resent any steps by the new
clerk tending toward removing her
from the position she has neld so long
and filled with suoh eminent satisfac
torily to all concerned.
Small Pox Eliminated.
There is at present little if any
smallpox prevalent among the Mexi
can population of the city. Instead of
increasiug and becoming epidemic
with the advent of cold weather as
was feared it looks as if the dread
disease bas entirely disappeared from
tbe city.
Officer George Haro'd who circul
ates continually among tbe Mexican
inhabitants in endeavoring to weed out
the criminal element says he has cot
heard of a single care for weeks.
Diphtheria and scarlet lever have
also entirely disappeared although
whooping cough is still prevalent and
throat disease which tbe doctors
term tonsllitls has recently been going
the rounds among the juvenile popula
tion.

A Walk Away.
There was a Mexican team of horses
tied to the telegraph pole near the
Santa Fe depot yesterday and tbe
switch engloe in making the rounds
came very close to them. One of the
horses was awakened by the noise of
the train and told the other that the
train was coming and after talking
over the matter awhile the two con-
cluded that it would be a good excuse
for tbem to break loose and look for
something to eat and they did so. The
one next to the po'e gave asudden jerk
and the twine with which they were
tied gave way and they were as free as
their owner was the day before elec-
tion. Tne wagon was very heavy and
the hordes concluded not to run but
just walk fast and they started north
on Santa Fe street in the direction of
a livery stable. This is where the poor
be&sts made a great mistake. They
should b ve gone -faster because the
owner and several friends who were
sitting on the depot platform observed
the actions of the wayward plugs and
Immediately started In pursuit. After
a hard run the team was captured and
returned to the pole where they were
tied with two cords instead of one.
Wild and Wooly.
A hackman crazed with election
fluid made things very lively at the
Santa Fe depot Tuesday night. He
was not satisfied with the position tak-
en by the rest of the conveyances so
he concluded that he would place Lis
hack on the platform. He did so and
ftosltlvely refused to remove it. A te-
ephone was sent to the barn where
the hack belonged to have someone
sent down to take care of the boister-
ous individual. A messenger was hur-
ried to the scene by the hack owner
but tbe drunken driver refused to give
htm cbargeof it. The hack was taken
to tne baro regardless of his objections
but he followed and when the barn
was reached he pulled a knife and was
in the act of carving the man who had
tbe audacity to take thehack from him
when Mr. Cold well proprietor of the
stable appeared on the scene with a
good heavy club and "persuaded" the

point.
The Mexican Central switch engine
yesteraay iook 48 transfer cars across
the river. Tbe transfers are very
neavy at present.
The Santa Fe last month handled
22500 cars . in Albuquerque. One
afternoon there were-nlaeteen trains
sent out of that point east and west.
Tbe Santa Fe peoole claim that tbe
full extent of their Pullman service bas
been engaged out of Chicago for the
next three weeks on the flyer. Very
gooa li true.
The Flyer from the west arrived on
time yesterdey but was delayed here
ten minutes owing to the fact that it
was found necessary to change one of
tbe couplers.

He will leave over tbe Santa Fe for
Denver Colorado.
Passenger travel into Mexico from
this point is very good. The lower
berths of the Pullman are all taken
when the train leaves' here and the
first and second class coaches carry
great many passengers.
