AN ENTERPRISING CONCERN
The Colorado Fuel And Iron Com-
pany's Works at Pueblo. Colo-
rado. Through the kladnesi of E. P.
Brown toe genial eeaeral agent of the
Colorado Fuel & Iron company the
Herald 1 able to reproduce a icture
of their extensive works at Pueblo
Colorado from which the public can
draw a fair idea of it magnitude.
There are hundreds of employes in the
various departments of this concern
and the products are shipped to all
points of the comptsa. Their
report shows that they are away be-
hind in tilliog the orders already on
hand aad every tfTort is being made to
6eo uro sufficient help to work the de-
partments to their full capacity Mr.
Brown in conversation with a Herald
reporter yesterday said that the works
at Pueblo were only a portion of this
company's Interest. "At Cerrillo
N. M. we are turning out from 90 to
100 car loads of coal a day and
are behind with our orders at
that pofnt The company is call-
ing for 300 men and you may say that
if this number report at Madrid N. M
which i only three miles from Cerril-
los they will be immediately put to
work. Work is guaranteed this num-
ber at fair wages. At the company
mill at Pueblo" continued Mr. Brown
"we have a rail mill a bar iron mill.
and a ca-t pipe mill In fine running
order. A rtructural and plate mill Is
nnde construction and will be com
pleted abut February 1st. This
department like all the others
under tbe control of this
co en pan y. will be supplied with
all the modern - equipments and will
control a large trade. Mtchlnery is
arriving dally and is being placed In
poiltloa so that it will be ready to
operate soon after the building is com
pleted. We are In a position to com-
pete with the world in our lines of
trade and this company have the
means and ahlllty)to press their interest
to tbe front.'
leg eays that Pete was shaking
hands with everyone regardless
of nationally ln-.tbat city yes-
terday and told Mm to inform his
friend in El Paso .that be would be
here this evening with the best engine
on rail earth or any . old place. The
Mexican Central boys are preparing to
give him a grand reception. Some of
the boys think that Pete will have a
hard time convlnciagithe rest of the
engineers that his engine is the best on
that line. - '. .-v.
Some Chance Yet.
In an interview yesterday regard!nr
the possibility of running a special
train to Alamogordo on Thanksgiving
day Superintendent Greig of the E.
P.& N. ; said: "We are wimng to
do what is right and met those who
wish to go up to Ala
mogordo on that day with what
consider a fair proposition
If we can get a party of eighty people
we will make the fare two dollars for
the round trip. I do not think that
this number can be secured but if they
can. we win oe more tnan wining to
furnish the train and hold it there
until after the party shall have
indulged in a dance. We could
not bold the regular train and
inconvenience our passengers who
wish to return at tbe regular hour.
That would neither be business-like
nor fair. I will telegraph to some
people at Alamogordo at once and find
out what they think of the matter and
if they will interest themselves in It.
It would be a very pleasant trip for tbe
young folks and if they will execute
their part of the arrangements we will
see that no delay is caused on our
part."
gine srtuck an iron of this kind on a
curve the whole train would have been
ditched but being placed on straight
track the wfceels of tbe engine pushed
it to one side without any ' harm being
done. In the opinion of a great many
the iron was placed there by
some boys but the company will
thoroughly investigate the matter.

Pete Kirk's Pride.
Pete Kirk has been in the employ of
the Mexican Central railroad for the
oast twelve years and is at present
running a passenger engine between
Juarez and Chihuahua Mexico. Like
all other engineers Pete loves
his engine better than be does
himself and I continually looking
to her welfare. A snort time
ago the officials found it necessary to
put Pete's love the 122 In the buck
hop to receive a general overhauling.
She had done excellent service with
Pete a hr protector and the company
was willing to gire her a rest but Pete
was not. lie could not entertain the
idea of havlntr to part with her for
even a short tlmo but was Induced to
do so by hi intimate rtllroad friend
The enrin was placsd In tbe reoair
shop and remained there for several
da?s but Pete never neglected to visit
the shop evry tim he arrived at the
other end "f the division. Wednesday
he was notified that "be was ready for
a trial trip and Prte jumped ith joy.

A Prosperous Future.
"Do you know" said a railroad of-
ficial yesterday "that the Jarllla min-
ing camp will prove of great financial
benefit to El Paso in the next year or
so. Machinery for mines is being ship-
ped there almost every day. I am ac-
quainted with several who have gone
to that place with a view to investigat-
ing and probably investing. They have
all spoken well of it " Some of them
are located there and the rest intend
to. The mines are located only 40
miles north of El Paso oa the E. P. &
N. E. road and It does not take long to
visit there. The place has not enjoy-
ed a boom but has maintained a steady
growth ever since the first prospector
arrived there. I have a greit deal of
confidence in the future of this o mp
and feel sale in predicting tnat tnere
will be a thousand people there within
the next twelve months."
A Business Point.
The u. tx. depot presented a very
lively scene yesterday afternoon. It
seemed as if all the passeoger trains
arrived at once and excitement ran
high. No 19 from the west was three
hours late on account of three freight:
cars being off the track near Yuma. !
Arizona. No 20 from the east was 40
minutes late on account of the stormy
weather. Tbe S. P. was about ready
to pull out for tbe west and in steamed
the flyer. The place presented a very
lively scene for a time but the yard
men worked like heroes and handled
the rush very creditable.
A Branch of the "Cork-Screw" Line.
Work will soon begin on what will
be known as the timber branch of the
Alamogordo & Sacramento Mountain
line. Superintendent Hollister sends
word that he has completed the Ala-
mogordo line and will probably start
on the timber branch some time early
in the week. This new line which
will be about two miles in length will
extend from the end of the Alamogor-
do line into the heart of tbe timber
country. This line will save hauling
the logs any great distance by wagons
and it will be extended farther into the
timber as convenience demands.

Whether or not tbe iron was placed
there with the Intention of wrecking
