A f tr thA Crxfnftrc.
The Mercantile club of St. Louis haa
a meeting the other day.and it seemed
ma u c- j jo
in tne uoiiea aiaieg oau an luiorrai w
the assemblage. Their object was to
organize against the ticket scalping
business claiming that it has injured
the railroad business and indirectly
damaged to a certain extent all other
kinds of business but their own. It
was the best attended meetirg held in
St. Louis for years and great interest
was manifested. It was shown where
fraudulent tickets bad been issued by
ticlct brokers and eold to innocent
purchasers. Two people traveling on
there fraudulent tickets were detected
on the liig Four road and the conduc-
tor demacdfd that they purchase two
more genuine tickets. Tnis they re-
fused to do and were ordered from the
train. It is said by the best legal
authorltv in the United States that
the li.g Four bad a perfect right to de-
mand pay for Its services. It was
belog defrauded by the ticket scalpers
for the passage of two people. This
kind of work is going on all the time
all over the United States and the rail
roads are getting very tired of it and
If possible they propose to stop it.
A Vigorous Kick.
There has been considerable com-
nlaint heard of late on account of the
G II. passenger train No. 19 blocking
the road crossing on Kansas street. A
crentleman who wis compelled to
drive his team over the rails yesterday
made a vigorous kick and called the
attention of the bystanders
to the ' fact that the engine
monopolized all the street
crossing excepting about a foot and a
half. He did not complain until he
had jolted himself over the rails and
became thoroughly hot. He said he
would like to live in a country where
they never knew what a railroad was
like. He fluehed with rage when he
said that all railroads were good was
to tear up the country and rob and
kill people and said that he knew
back in Kansas where a rail-
road engine killed three people
In one week In his own county. The
bystanders sneaked away one by one
until finally the farmer had the whole
field to himself. He looked at his
weather-worn horses for a minute or
two and then proceeded on his journey
north on Kansas street shaking his
head in a very threatening manrfer.
A Railroader's Prayer.
O. Lord! now I have flagged Thee
lift my fit from off the road of life and
plant them safely on - the deck of the
train of salvation. Let us use the
safety lamp of prudence make all coup-
lings in the train with the strong linlc
of Thy love and let my
headlight be the Bible. And
Heavenly Father keep all switches
