nounces as the result of the recent bond
election that the work of changing the
entire sewer system of the city will be-
gin at once; also the erection of tbe
city's electric light plant. Ex.
President A. R. Moore of the To-
bacco Growers' Association of Houston
received a letter from President Mc-
Kioley today saying if he made a
eouthern trip he would stop in Houston
as tbe guest of the association. Fort

Tne penitentiary board was in ses-
sion at Austin approving the monthly
reports of the financial agent and sup-
erintendent. Tbe euprintendent esti-
mates that tbe flood in the Brazos bot-
tom has entailed a loss of. 8150.000 to
the state penitentiary forces.
A letter was received by the govern-
or from the iSimmons Medicine com-
pany of St. Louis stating that they had
mailed Instructions to all tbeir custom-
ers in Texas to send $1 to the governor
for the flood sufferers. There have
been 10000 of these letters mailed and
the money is expected to come in very
shortly.
Great exoltement was occasioned at
Athens on the 15th by the discovery of
a fiendish crime and the arrest of a
man charged with its commission.
It was tbe poisoning of two children
by a man who is said to have been
holding improper relations with a
woman well known here and desired
the children put out of the way.
This crime coming so soon following
the lynching of the Humphreys and

greatly deplored by the good citizens
as tending to give to Athens a reputa-
tion which is not deserved by the form-

Professor William Lipscomb who
was shot down by John T. Carlisle
Monday night in the First Christian
church has died. The remains will be
shipped to Nashville for interment.
This is theaseventeenth killing in Dal-
las .this year. The feeling against
shootlsts is becoming Intense. Fort

The negro rapist and murderer who
has been hunted for in the Cuero
neighborhood for five days was found
near Yorktown. Ordered to surrender
be advanced up on tbe officers with a
drawn butcher knife and was shot
down. Coroner held an inquest on the
body whioh was buried where it fell

Merlda have all been insured for $500-
000. During the past month there were

The public schools at Charco Redon-
do near Cerralvo have been closed for

ing to cross an arroyo swollen by the
rains was swept away and drowned.

It is proposed to erect monuments of
Juarez and Escobeda in the San Pablo

A woman named Magdalena Baque-
dano who makes a business of kidnap-
ping children has been arrested and
jailed at Merida.
Two department stores are projected
for the City of Mexico. This means
heated competition in many lines of re-

Ground is being broken for the coc-
struotion of a new bull ring on the lot
across from the Indianilla track at tbe

A Spanish sympathizer in Chihua-
hua who tore down and trampled on
the American flags with which the
plaza was adorned on the 4th was fined
$10 for his fun.
The oil wooden gas lamp posts in
Mazatlan are being removed and the
wood will be used to consume the garb-
age and dead; animals that abound in
the suburbs. Ex.
It is reported that a company of en-
gineers have arrived at La Paz Lower
California to search for a treasure said
to have been buried near there and
which is rumored to be worth 815000
000.
The other day near Bacublrito the
men taking out olay for the manufac
ture of bricks came across the remains
of a mastodon but through ignorance
of the value of their find destroyed all
except the tusks.
On the first the Yucatan bank show-
ed assets of $8471969.98 and had of Its
bank-bills In circulation $3637280; and
the Mercantile bank showed asssets of
$2733472.11 and had $1437787 of its
bank-bills in circulation.
' The recent heavy rains about Ures
extinguished the fire In the brush
which has burned over an extent of
country 4 kilometers long. During the
recent drouth in this district over 2000
head of cattle perished for want of
water.
Governor Ahumada on behalf of the
city of Chihuahua has made a contract
with the Jewell Filter company of
Chicago for the erection of a filter
plant to purify the water used here for
drinking and cooking purposes. En-
terprise. Tourists at Merida have been pro-
hibited from photographing the ruins
in this state without obtaining permis-
sion as In clearing the ground for
their views they have greatly Injured
several of the views in question. Mex-

There is a project on hand in the
state of Guanajuato to ereot a monu-
ment in honor of the father of Mexican
independence Miguel Hidalgo at the
Vicente ranch municipality of Abaso-
lo where the good and great pries c-
bero was born. President Diaz as well
as tbe governors of the different states
are willing to assist in this patriotic

Several photographic views of the
Chapultepeo military academy are be-
ing taken with the purpose In view of
sending them to the Paris exposition.
The handsome buildings the elegant
departments and the military boys
drawn up in parade style have all been
taken and will no doubt add greatly to
our exhibit there next year and will
how that Chapul'.ppec is one of the
best military academies in the world.
Near Guadalahara Sebastian Cama-
cho owner of tue Arenales ranch near
Zapotlanejo has been arrested on sus-
picion of complicity in the murder of
Don Candldo Flores whose body was
found in the road near the Estancia ha-
cienda. Camacho Is a cattle thief and
a noted bad oharacter. Luis Gonzalez
who burned the house of some protes-
tauts several years ago is also impli-
cated and in being hunted down. Mex-

The department of war has acoepted
the offer of the citizens of San Juan
Teot huacan which placed at its dis-
posal a tract of land to build a new bar-
racks for a regiment of cavalry. Col-
onels Alejandro Ordorica and Manuel
Blazquez together with Lieutenant
Colonel Gonzales Suarez were com-
missioned to examine the grounds.
They went to San Juan last Sunday
and have reported favorably on the
question of aooeptlng the grounds.

The recent growth in the collections
at tbe custom houses has been phenom-
enal and for the fiscal year whioh
closed ob June 30th last they were
several million dollars above the esti-
mates. The following table shows the
custom house collections during the
last fiscal year as compared with the
previous fiscal year and it will be seen

Recent statistics relating to Mexico
show tbe prlnolpal haciendas number
8101 of which 3400 are devoted to the
raising of cereals and 1560 to cattle.
Both of these classes of .haciendas are
well distributed throughout the re-
public tbe big northern states na-
turally leading in the number of cattle
ranges and the states of the central
plateau having the largest number of
grain farms. Theresare seventy-three
in Veracruz and fifteen in Guerrero.
Tabasco heads the list in the number
of cacao plantations with 124 while
Chiapas has 181 coffee estates Vera-
cruz ninety-eight and Oaxaca forty-
one. Yucatan leads in the number of
benequen plantations boasting 348 the
forty-seven remaining haciendas being
located In the state of Campeche.
Veracruz has forty-five tobacco planta-
tions Sonora thirteen and Tobasco
twelve. Hidalgo holds the record in
the production of -pulp " with 128 ha-
ciendas devoted to the cultivation of
tbe pulque maguey. Jalisco has forty-
five estates devoted to the mescal ma-
guey. Chiapas counts 244 haciendas
devoted to raising sugar cane Nuevo
Leon 226 Veracruz 106 Yucatan 94
