Albert Sterrin was escorting Miss Cuni-
ford from service to her home as he had
done so faithfully for many Sundays.
Helen suddenly exclaimed under her
breath "Oh Albert here comes Hugh
Ladd!"
Did that "oh" indicate a flutter at the
approach of Ladd who was stroke of the
Ilalvord crew and the hero of all the
pirls who know him and many who did
not?
Ladd the magnificent passed and bow-
ed fascinatingly.
"Isn't he superb!" lie said enthusi-
astically. "I hope his crew wins next
Wednesday! Father is. going to take me
to see the race."
Sterrin wondered within himself
whether it profiteth a man to be rich and
a rising lawyer rather than the stroke of
a varsity crew. Hut he said:
"I'm sorry I can't see the race. I
should like to see Ladd win. But I've
got to go to Philadelphia on Wednesday
and I shan't return till"
"But you've taken seats for the theater
Thursday Allx-rt" she reminded him.
"I'll be back Thursday noon. I had
not forgotten so much pleasure in store
for me."
"You're not tired of taking me to the
theater then?"
"I'm aevcr tired of you" he answer-
ed earnestly.
"Well here we are at home" she said
weariedly. "What! You cannot dine
with us? Very well Albert till Thurs-
day." "She didn't seem very disappointed"
he mused as he went on his way. " 'Isn't
he superb? "
The audience was streaming out of the
theater. Helen and Albert were among
the first. The comedy had been dull.
She seemed in haete to get away. He
felt also to his bitterness that she had
found not alone the comedy uninterest-
ing. To augment his discomfort he had
lunched at the club that day with a
friend who had spoken quite unwittingly
of the "stroke Ladd was pulling with
Banker Cnmford's daughter." Laddhad
gone home 'with them The "evening of the
race.
"It's so close Helen" Sterrin ventured
at length. "Don't you think you'd like to
stop at Calyard's for some ices?"
At Calyard's all tables but two were
occupied. At one of these they sat.
"There's Hugh Ladd" she whispered
almost at once "having ices all by him-
self in the corner. Think of it! He won
the race yesterday. Did you ever see
such a champion? Ho is going to dme
with us on Sunday" she said finally.
Sterrin felt that the ax had fallen. He
was not displeased when he saw her
nearly ready to leave. He felt for his
wallet and then remembered that he had
put it in his outer coat. He stood and
reached the pocket. It was gone lost or
picked! For an instant he thought to ad-
mit tbe mishap. This it seemed was the
final maladroit shock to his hopes. Then
desperate he found inspiration.
Taking his handkerchief as though it
had been the object of his fumbling
search he suggested to Helen: "Let mo
ask Ladd over here a moment. He looks
quite alone."
"If you wish so" she assented with so
little concern that he wondered.
"Ladd" whispered Sterrin hoarsely as
he gave the champion his hand in the
most easy manner "I'm in a deuce of a
fix! I've lost my wallet. I said to Mis9
Cumford I meant to ask you to our table.
As an enormous favor will you Insist on
our coming here? I'll see you later at
your hotel and"
"Certainly Mr. Sterrin. I'm at the
Bolingbroke. Meanwhile I'll sit here
like glue."
Wheu they were all at Ladd's table
they had a merry chat. Helen laughed
Immoderately at Ladd's account of the
funny side of the race. Sterrin sat aa
cheerful as a man on a pincushion.
They left Calyard's together. Ladd
took care of the waiter's check and
adroitly contrived to chase the clouds
from tbe face of the one who had first
served Sterrin. The conquering hero
bade them good night aa soon as they
were outdoors and jumped on an up town
car.
It was 1 o'clock when Sterrin was
shown Into Ladd's room at the Boling-
broke. lie was all in a fluster and laid a
bill on the table mumbling "You've done
me a wonderful service Ladd."
"Nothing dear fellow" " grunted the
champion. "Accidents will happen."
"You'll be very happy Ladd" Sterrin
went on confusedly.
"I'll do my best. Join me. What shall
It be? Have a high ball. You look tired."
He touched the button. "Smoke?"
"I'm going directly" said Sterrin as
the boy came for the order.
"Oh let's smoke and drink and talk.
No one can sleep in this weather."
"Ladd Ladd don't make fun of me"
said Sterrin with unaccountable vexa-
tion. The athlete stared at him. The boy
went out.
"Why should I make fun of you Ster-
rin my boy?"
"You you beat me out."
"What do you mean you bet the
wrong way?"
"You beat me out of Hel of Helen."
The words were uttered iu slow agony.
"You're dining with her Sunday. You've
talked to her. I spoke to her tonight.
She's always the sumo indefinite sweet
woman. Now I know why."
Sterrin sank shamefacedly into a chair.
"Let's drink to her like men?" said
Ladd solemnly.
Sterrin never knew how he got the
drink down but he did.
"She's a sweet indefinite little girl"
said the champion staring into his emp-
ty glass. "Have a smoke Sterrin. I
dare not. She refused my proposal yes-
terday after the race. The dinner on
Sunday is a 'diner d'adieu.' "
Sterrin studied him unbelieving hold-
ing the lighted match and his cigar apart.
Ladd poured himself another drink.
"Sterrin I drink to her and to you.
Here's happiness!"'
When the cards for the Sterrin-Cum-ford
wedding were sent out a month lat-
er people said it was time. Nobody
knew what Ladd said. He was coursing
through France on a wheel. Exchange.
