B. AftD O.'S CI6AR SHAPED TRAIN
An Experiment That Promises a
New Record For Speed.
A most interesting and important
railway experiment la now Deicg con-
ducted by the Baltimore and Ohio
Railroad company with a passenger
train of peculiar construction.deBijrned
07 Frederick U. Adams formerly of
Chi capo but no" of New York. The
train says the New York Tribune is
variously designated as the "wlnd-
.oiiLLr" the ''ciear-shaped traiu""
and ot ber terms Descriptive of its de
sign. Mr. Adam6 is at a loss ior an ap-
nrnnr late name and describes his in
vention as a railway train calculated to
offer the least possible resistance to
the atmosphere. He has constructed a
train witn tbe Idea of treating the air
as If it were fluid with the sumo qua
Hies of prebsure and resistance as
water and argues that if high speeds
are to be obtained with economy as
much attention should be paid to the
lines of passenger coaches as to those
cf a steamship or yacht.
Under the Adams plan of construct
ion there is a continuity of lines from
the enerine cab to the sear car. Al
possible obstructions are avoided. The
epaoes between the cars are closed with
flexible connections which while per
mltting the flexure of the train on cur
ves and roegh tracks yet present no
opening for the air. All air for venti-
lation is admitted from the front end
of the tender below the smoke from
the locomotive and above the dust
from tbe trucks. It passes through
ducts along the car rcofs and is distri-
buted in tbe train escaping through
regleters in the floor. An ordinary lo-
comotive is used .
Six old passenger cars have been
remodeled' on these plans and a series
of tests Is now being made. It is
hoped that a means will be found to
secure higher speed with economy and
to provide some means of ventilation
other than that of open car windows.
The field is a new one and important
results are expected. The tests thus
f sr show a decided eoenomy in power
and an increased speed ranging from
seven to twelve miles an hour. Mr.
Adams ia confident that a careful study
of the construction and of the air cur-
rents will lead to far better results.
With light engines the six cars have
been hauled at exceedingly high
speeds. Tbe best runs thus far hare
been eighteen miles in sixteen minu-
tes ten miles in eight minutes 4 6
miles in three minutes and eighteen
seconds and two miles in seventy-one
seconds'. Railway officials are intent-
ly watcblng these tests. Prominent
New York and Baltimore capitalists
are interested in Mr. Adams' inven-
tions and bis train will have a thor-
ough trial on various roads in the
summer.

It was necessary to exatnine one
hundred and six men yesterday before
a jury could be secured in the Newt.
Mattnews case. A good number of
them disqualified because of the fct
that they aid not believe in tne penalty
of death being inflicted as a puoisn-

were excused on the ground that they
had beard the facts in the case and had
already formed an opinion.

"We have lived out here in Oakwood-by-the-Lake
for five years" said Jen-
kins at the breakfast table "and I
know just exactly 13 people outside of
my own family. I've always thought
that people were sociable out in the
suburbs. But they aren't. There's
Brown and his wife and Mr. and Mrs.
Elliot and the three Edwards sisters
and young Sharp. And If you count
John and Nellie Best and the Strocg
family yon've got 'em all. Just IS."
"Bat the 'trouble is John." said his
wife "that you go down town so early
that you don't see anything of anybody
here in the daytime and you know bow
hard it is to get you to go out in the
evening. Now if you would only join
one of the cinch clubs and go out with
me one evening a week you'd soon find
that you knew a big lot of nice people.
They are sociable enough John. The
fault Is with you."
The next week Jenkins told bis wife
to put in their names for membership
in one of the card clubs.
"Pick out the biggest one" he said.
"I want to see some new people for a
change."
On Tuesday evening he came home
early from the office. His wife met
him at the door.
"Where is it going to meet?" he
asked.
"Over at Strong's tonight. You know
It meets at the houses of all the mem-
bers in turn."
Jenkins and his wife were a little
late in getting to the party. The mem-
bers were already seated at the card
tables when they came in. Mr. Strong
introduced them.
"Ladles and gentlemen" he said "let
me Introduce our new members Mr.
and Mrs. Jenkins."
The club members rose and bowed.
There were Brown and his wife Mr.
and Mrs. Elliot the three Edwards sis-
ters young Sharp John and Nellie
Best and the Strong family.
"I think you know them all Mr. Jen-
kins" said his host.
"Yes" said Jenkins "I think I do."

The subjoct of the illustration pre-
sented herewith is a guard wbi-h oau
be applied to any vertically sliding
window which is attached to and
moves with the lower sash and which
Is so constructed that it can be readily
opened whenever it may bu desired.
The primary purpose of the puard is
to provide means for preventing chil-
dren from falling out of the window
says The Scientific American.
In the construction of the window
guard lazy tougs are employed carried
by a frame which is screwed to the
lower sash. The sill of the window is
provided with a slot communicating
with an opening into which the lazy
tongs and their frame can pass when
the window is closed.
It is evident that when the lower
sash is raised the lazy tongs guard Is
likewise raised to cover the open space
and that when the sash is lowered.
COMBINED WINDOW GUARD AND FLY SCREEN.
the guard is likewise lowered as the
dotted lines of our engraving show.
When the guard is in its uppermost
position the lower bar completely fills
the slot so as to prevent the accumu-
lation of dust.
Most window guards are defective in
so far as no means are provided for re-
moving the guard in case of fire. The
objection has been very simply over-
come in the device under consideration.
The lazy tongs are pivoted to one side
bar of their frame and are adapted to
be secured to the other side bar by
means of a hook and keeper. By re-
leasing the hook the lazy tongs can be
folded together so as to leave au un-
obstructed passage. The construction
therefore does not interfere with the
closing of the shutters.
In connection with the guard a fly
screen is employed which is attached
to the upper and lower bars of the lazy
tongs frame. The fly screen Is con-
structed so that it can be readily raised
and lowered independently of the sash
and Is provided with a catch engaging
the upper bar of the guard frame by
means of which catch it is held in
raised position. The fly screen and
guard can be used either separately or
together. The device is also applica-
ble to the windows of high speed rail-
way trains.
I'mtlnfc tbe Color Stue.
An improved lantern has been de-
vised for testing the color sense of em-
ployees in the railway or. marine serv-
ice who use colored signals by night
says the Chicago Record. On the front
of the lantern are two movable disks
the lower having five green and five
red glasses of different shades one
yellow one blue and one white glass.
Tbe upper disk has London smoke
glass of three different shades and
some clear openings. By rotating tbe
disks by hand any of the colors can be
shown either alone or in combination
with the smoke glass. Between the
disks Is a movable diaphragm which
regulates the size of the colored area
shown. Inside the lantern are two
pieces of ground glass which can be
placed before the light when desired
giving the effect of a fog. There are
two separate burners so that two col-
ors can be shown at the same time in
contrast if necessary. In this way red
and green two reds or two greens of
different shades red and white etc.
can be shown at the same time or any
color can be shown by itself. Each
glass has an illuminated number or
letter which can be seen by the
person making the examination but
which is screened from the person
tested. By this means a record can be
kept of the color shown and a name
given to it. It is claimed that this lan
tern will detect cases of defective color
perception which are not discovered by
the worsted test.
Ozone In industry.
Ozone is now used for a number of
industrial operations and one of tbe
most important is its application to the
bleaching of yarns. A plant has re-
cently been started in Silesia for this
purpose and it is likely to be followed
by other works where cotton wool and
silk will be treated. Ozone bleaching
is said to be superior to sulphur bleach-
ing as permanent whites are produced
which do not disappear upon washing.
There is also no Injury done to the fab-
ric by the process.
Veils and Red Ifoaea.
O. Rosenbach has noticed that a great
'majority of the women who wear veils
In winter had circumscribed areas of
iredness generally at the point of the
nose and cheeks.
