EL PASO UAIIY HERALD WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 3 1900.
THRILLIN'. STOMY
Of the Rescue Of Lieutenant Gllmo e
n the Philippines-
In McClure'B Lieutenant Glllmore
telln of his nine months captivity
among the Filipinos during which he
twice crossed the island of Luzon
with his captors and was finally with
bis fellow prisoners abandoned in
the northern mountains by the
guard who had disobeyed their or
ders to kill the captives. On the thtru
riar after their abandonment the
wretched party was rescued by Colonel
Hare. This is the sailor's account of
the joyful meeting.
Next morning we were up early
Some of us were tinkering at the
rafts; others were cooking the morn-
ing meal. We heard a loud yell and
around a bend of me rlver.mnning rap
idly across the stony beach charged a
body of men. We dropped our work.
an some of us cried out."The savages!
The savages!" Instinctively we be-
gan picking up stones with which to
defend ourselves. Another yell from
the advancing squad and it seemed to
me there was something familiar about
it. The tones vibrated In my soul.
I felt my flesh flush hot; my heart act-
ed queerly; my muscles were a-twitch-Ing.
A third yell! Yes. those are the
voices of our countrymen; and now we
were able to see the blue shirts and
yellow khaki of the American sol-
diers as they swung down the beach.
"Americans lie down!" they cried
rushing nearer and nearer. They
thought we were under guard and
"wanted us to get out of harm's way
in case or battle. Heeding not their
cries we leaped toward them. We held
out our hands; we embraced one an-
other rescued and rescuers. They
eyed us closely because we were so
pale weak and disheveled. We felt
like children who had escaped danger
and reached our father's knee. . It
seemed good to get close to them.to
feel their strength their protection.
Colonel Hare put his arm around me.
and I didn't want him to take it
away. He called for three cheers for
n. His lusty men woke the echoes
there among the rocks. I then
asked my men to cheer the soldiers;
the volume of sound was now thin
and weak by contrast but the hearts
of a score of grateful happy fellows
were in it. For some time we stood
thus shaking hands exchanging in-
quiries cheering now and then. I
remember the .regret I felt because I
could not yell louder.
Our rescuers laughed till they
cried as they sat watching us eat
and encouraging us to take more. Of
course we were eager to learn how
they had been able to find us and lit-
tle by little they told us the story. I
had known Colonel Hare's father
Judge Hare in Vashlngton. and the
last thing the old gentleman said to his
son when the latter sailed for the
Philippines in March was: Find
Gillmore find Glllmore and send him
home." The Colonel had always
borne in mind his father's injunction
but It was not till December that he
struck our trail. That was at Vigan.
ColonI Hare and Lieutenant-Colonel
llowze were ordered lu follow lli in-
surgents toward Bangued and when
this place was taken the Spanish pris-
oners told them how the natives had
started us off to the mountains. Pur-
suit was instantly begun but Colonel
Hare could learn nothing of the direc-
tion in which we had gone. For three
r four days Colonel Hare and Howze
and their men marched from village to
village north of Bangued. seeking
news of us. By this time so many of
the soldiers were ill through heat ex-
haustion and scant rations that it be-
came necessary to call for volunteers.
Every officer and man able to stand up-
on his feet offered to leap into the wil-
derness. Colonel Hare picked 150 men.
and in light marching order carrying
almost nothing but rifles and ammuni-
tion struck into the mountains. How
they managed to follow us. how they
climbed crawled pushed swam fought
their way through canons streams
forests and jungles encumbered as
they were with weapons and camp
equipment must ever remain a mys-
tery to me. But they did it. and as an
American sailor I take off my cap to
the American soldier; no more gal-
lant lad than he walKs the earth.

of the land office of the department of
the Interior is in the city enroute to
the White Oaks country.
He stated thai he had lately lwri
transferred from Oregon back to New
Mexico where he used to be stationed
and said "you can state that Cali-
fornia. Oregon and Washington will
all give McKinley a big majority ll.'s
year and that the democrats in Colo-
rado will not bet even money on their
own state going for Bryan."
Captain Mathers tells an amusing
story on nimself of an incident which
transpired in this city two years ago
during one of his visits to this section.
At that time El Paso was infested
with bunco men and sharks of all
Kinds even to a greater degree than at
present and one of them grew so
bold as to write the captain's son in
Washington and ask for money sign-
ing Captain. Mather's name to the let-
ter. The money was sent but inter-
cepted and returned.
While stopping at a hotel here Cap-
tain Mathers happened to speak of his
son and afterwards wrote him a lette
which he left in the hotel mail box!
where anyone might see the address.
A week or so later the young man
received a letter from his father ask-
ing that 34 be sent L!m immed-ately

The money was sent promptly but in
the meantime the son visited his i.ioifj .

no mention of the accident.

Last week after the killing of Del-

Mexicans got to much booze so they
shot up the town. The shooter was
caught and got three months in the
county Jail. This week there was an-
other shooting up the town but the
Mexicans vamoosed. A few nights ago
a trio of Mexicans thought McMahon
had too many windows so they broke
some and the next day paid the dam-
age and costs. Deputy Sheriff Mase

STATE ASSOCIATION
Of Kflilneis Clubs Favored By San
Antonio
The following reply has been receiv
ed from the secretary of the Business
Men's club of San Antonio to the circu
lar letter sent out by the El Paso
chamber of commerce suggesting the
organization of a t-late association of
city commercial organizations:
" San Antonio. September 28.
"Mr. S. J. Freudenthal. President of
Chamber of Commerce El I'aso
Texas.
"Dear oir: President Aubrey is ab
sent in the east and not knowing just
when he will return. I take the liber
ty of answering yours of the 26th to
him in regard to federating the busi
ness organizations of the state. I
answer the letter in question without
any hesitancy as I am fully familiar
with President Aubrey's views on that
subject.
"Last November we federated the
business organizations in south and
west Texas and encouraged the organ
ization of Commercial clubs in every
town of any prominence. Mr. Aub-
rey was elected president of the feder
ation and although we endeavored to
convince them of the necessity of be
ing active in all matters relating to
commercial interests in section named
with a few exceptions that degree of
interest was not manifested necessary
to make the federated clubs the power
they would have been if more were
displayed.
"He canvassed the situation to de
termine the cause and decided that
where an organization was not strong
enough to pay a secretary liberally
for continuous services the work de
volving on a few of the most zealous.
Interest rapidly declined small details
were ignored meetings were rare and
they were never heard from unless
something of moment turned up in
which they were especially Interested.
"Mr. Aubrey has made up bis mind
that a state organization of commer-
cial bodies is very necessary that ev-
ery town of any importance should be
encouraged to organize a commercial
club believing that united action on
tne part of such an organization will
not only aid materially in developing
the state but force other states to ac-
cord us the distinction due us as a
most important factor In commer
cial circles in all matters of national
interest.
"Your generous proposition that El
Paso be elected as the place for a
convention for the purpose of federat
ing state organizations has this one
drawback you are too far from the
center and I think some place should
be selected which would equalize as
near as possible the time and expense
that would lie Involved. Of course we
would like to nave the convention
here but would not antagonize Waco
or even Dallas if the indications were
that a greater number would be pres-
ent by electing those points.
"If we can be of any service to von
in originating sufficient Interest to
make the move a success don't hesi
tate to call on us.
Yours very truly.
(Signed) Clias. N. Kight.
Secretary."
