CANANEAS
PROPERTY
A Most Interesting Story Of
the Famous Mine.
BAmtS AND MURDERS
Kavo Resulted From tha Various
Disputes Tbat Have Come Up
With Regard To Titles The
Troubles May Nut Be Over Yt
"The dwision jul rendered by the
supreme court of Mexico. Riving W. C.
!rpene clear title to the Cananeaa
mining property in Sonora." said J. E.
Onthninte yesterday. "recall to me the
interentinR history of that niuh fought
for property.
"I remember distinctly when the
property was first opened by Ameri-
cans in IS79. and have watched the
fiht with interest up to the beginning
of this suit. The property was work-
d by the Spaniards or Indians long
before an American had explored that
country but for some unknown reason
the mines had been abandoned. In
1X79 Dick Jacobs. Payon and the
Karnes brothers opened the mines and
worked them extensively for three
years. The low price of copper caused
their failure and all four of the men
lost all they had. Starvation staring
them in the face they left the camp
and returned to California to begin
their career anew.
"The property was then forgotten for
two years but in 1884 an old prosiec-
tor named George Kitt located the
mines again while going over the es-
tate of Governor I'iscaro. then gov-
ernor of the state of Sonora. With
two associates. Bennett and Henham.
he organized a company of Ohio peo-
ple and again liegan developing the
property. This was during the excite-
ment at Tombstone. Arizona when
that section of the west was making
history. The greed of prospectors and
speculators the imperfect mining laws
and hundreds of other things kept the
country in constant trouble and Can-
aneas had its share. Fights riots and
even battles were not uncommon and
many a man "crossed the river" in
bis efforts to have his way.
"Hennett anil Henham put in a smel-
ter at the Cananeas and legan opera-
tions on an extensive scale. At times
when conper would rise in value It
looked like they had struck it rich.
They had several hundred men em-
ployed. In the spring of 1XS1. just af-
ter Bennett anil Henham took hold of
the property riots were almost every
day occurrences. On one occasion an
American teamster struck a Mexican
'fv with a whip and the result was
the calling out of the Mexican troops
by Governor Fiscare. The Mexican em-
ployes became indignant and mai- an
attack on the teamster. He escaped to
the ramns of the Americans and there
a battle ensued. There were anout
fifty people on each side and the rum-
ber of killed and wounded is not
known to this day. Governor Piscaro
called out the troops and ended the
disturbance and for a time at least
all was quiet. It was later renewed
however and nothing like peace was
known then for years.
"Henham was a rather proud east-
erner and never knew how to handle
Mexican labor. He brought a fine
team to Cananeas and spent much of
his time driving over the hills. One
day he told a Mexican to take his team
and exercise them. The Mexican
nleyed and gave the team more exer-
cise than they could stand. One horse1
died from the effect. Henham en-
raged at the act reprimanded the Mex-
ican and was in the act of punishing
him when the Mexican grabbed a shot
gun and emptied its contents Into Ben-
ham's head. He died Instantly and his
v-'fe shipped his remains to his eastern
home.
"With the death of Henham trouble
began again and has not ended yet.
In IKS'! the company failed on account
of the low price of copper together
with bad management and the mines
were deserted for the third time. They
bad built a big smelter but before they
left the smelter was taken piece by
piece to Tombstone and sold. Just
here a piece of history not confirmed
comes in. It is said that a stranger
took up the property but being unable
to work hired a Chinaman to watch
it. He came back several years later
and the Chinaman demanded his mon-
ey. The stranger refused to pay and
the Chinaman killed him with an ax.
The mines were forgotten again until
W. C. Greene came along in 1894.
"Greene was once a cowboy running
around Tombstone and was then a
typical western customer with the
small fortune of a horse and saddle.
He made a trip into the Cananeas
country and found the mines over
which so many men had been killed.
He returned to Tomlstone and mar-
ried a rich widow and with her money
began the development of the mines
again. He interested eastern capital
and put up another smelter but whn
he was readv to operate the mines ex-
tensively old owners of the property
came in and began worrying htm. The
rest of the story' is too fresh in the
minds of th public to be related as
an old story. Greene received a I'M"
to the property in the supreme court of
Mexico last week but has several suits
In the courts of Arizona and the out-
come of it all is yet some distance
in the futnre."

expense of putting io a sewer and tbat
they have told city authorities so nut
they nan not get them to make any
move toward putting It in. From the
Matemeot of the people residing In
that neighborhood it seem that truly
there should be something done for
them not only in justice to tbern but
for tbe good name aod sanitary condi-
tion of tbe city. There people pay the
same taxes for sanitary purposes as
