SCHOOL STATISTICS.
The annual report of the t-oinmiss
roner of education just made public
.-hows that during the year of 1838-99
there were enrolled in the common
?rhoo!s of Texas ."2..0:! pupils with an
JveraRe daily attendance of 30.0;.j
There were 7.4!- male and 7.1H0 female
teachers. The value of the school
property of the state at that time was
J7.490.2OO.
l-AKE lir.VT KKCAM-EI).
The pet panther which was used near
Austin last winter to give W. J. Bryan
a taste of what he thought was a real
wild panther bunt was shipped to San
Antonio Sunday wheie it is to be used
as an attraction in a saloon. Bryan
went on his fake panther hunt about
the time that he and Ex-Governor
Work were Indulging in the sport of
ndtne; Mr. Hogg's pet ostriches and
laying plans for a public race on the
hacks of the big biid.s.
LABORERS WANTED.
The great demand for cotton pickers
ha almost depopulated the towns of
northern Texas of laborers both male
and female and help is hardly to be had
at any price. The work on the Sher-man-Denison
Interburban Electric line
is progressing slowly because the con
tractors are unable to secure laborers.
The are offering from I.7 to 12 per
day and are unable to get them. Thou
sands of negroes went into that part
of the state to pick cotton and as a re-
sult hare introduced small pox into Na-
varro county. An effort will be made
n keep them from entering the town
when the picking season ends.
ARIZONA.
IHOKNIX INDIAN SCHOOL.
The enrollment of the Indian school
at Phoenix for the present quarter is
the lamest in the history of the school
there being enrolled 70ti pupils. Dur
ine; the month of September there was
a total of eighty-eight pupils admitted
ti the school. All the dormitory ar
commodations are now occupied but
Superintendent McCowan has so far
established a precedent of having re
fused no Indian Itoy or girl admission
to the school.
LAKE SIPERIOH MINE.
Rich ore has Ikk ii struck on the Too
fool level or the ltke biiperior near
His bee. Tin; ore is good and the drift
is all ore. Assays of theore have been
madeand the results were satisfactory.
A new hoist of the latest pattern has
been ordered for the mine. The shaft
will be very extensive in thre e com-
partments and will take an enormous
amount of lumber. The I-ake Superior
will add fame to the distrct in which
it si located as it has all the prospects
nf a rich mine with exhaustible ore
bodies and the development work is
carried on with system and skill un-
der good management.
AH ARIZONA MYSTERY.
The body of Francisco Ipez. a 14-year-old
boy of Tucson was found last
Saturday night in thevicinity of Sla-
Ten's gulch in the Dragoon mountains.
It was first reported that he had acci-
dentally killed himself or committed
saicide but at the coroner's inquest
there were developments that aroused
suspicions that he had been foully dealt
with. The belief was so strong that
the coroner's jury refeused to return a
verdict of suicide or accidental death
hat instead returned a verdict that de-
ceased came to his death by a shot
from a gun in the hands of some un-
known person. I.opez was a member
of a party of Mexicans at a wood camp.
Hi.-J three companions testified at the
inquest that he left camp to hunt some
game with a six-shooter. A little later
ih?y heard a shot anil going out the
found bini d ad wit h a hole through his
heart. The location of the wound
where the bali entered and the fact
that the clothing was not powder burn-
ed makes the theory of suicide or ac-
cidental death unreasonable. The au-
thorities have the case in hand and are
trying to solve the mystery.
MEXICO.
ft is r-Mrted that the Corralito
otnnany will close the road from Nu-
era C-isas Grandes west. In that case
people traveling west from that town
wil have to go around by Corralitos
town and thence to Janos. This will
increase the distance from the railroad
station to Oaxacu and other Sonora
points ft is raid that the reason of
this action is that people camp near
watering pl-ices and wild rattle are
kept from the water by them and also
prairi fires are often started by them.
AHCMAIlA AGAINST GAMBLING.
Gov. Aluiiuada has issued an or-
der prohibiting gambling in the city of
(Thiuuahiia. T'-e oriier will probably
be extended to embrace all the cities
of the state. Tbiee years ago M. I--leTouchie.
. ennil-ss Tin k. who had
arrived in Ciudud Chihuahua with a
(lerformitig bear applied for anil was
granted concession giving him the
exclusive right to conduct gambling
staAlishinents in Chihuahua. In less
'han. three years lie had accumulated
a fortune of $1.0oo.0oo. When the gov-
ernor's attention was drawn to this
fart he decided that the Turk had don"
4e toiichie" act about long enough and
issued the order prohibiting gambling
in Cinuahua but he has applied to
other states for gambling concessions.
SANTA MARIA
GUN CLUB
Has Achieved hxtraordinary
Success So Far.
ONE HUNUFUD MEMB RS
And there ere Twenty Five Appli-
cants For the First Vacancy
Club House Afmo-t Ready
The Simla Maria Rod and Gun club
held a meeting last night at the office
of Horace H. S -evens the secretary-
treasurer. The arrangements now under way
for making the club house and conven-
iences at the hunting grounds first-
class in every respect were fully dis-
cussed. The club authorized the treas-
urer to purchase six Mullin's pressed
neel duck lKats and he will place the
order immediately so that they will
reach Guzman by the time the club
house is completed which will be about
Novemler K.
The club house-will le in charge of
a steward and members who go there
for an outing will be assured of every
comfort and convenience and excellent
table board. The table will always be
supplied with venison snipe quail
ducks fish and other kind of game
abounding in vicinity of the club house.
The surface of the water of Santa Maria
lake Is already said to be swarming
with wild ducks and geese and it is a
safe guess that the sportsmen from this
city will be plentiful just as soon as
the club house In finished and equip
ped.
There are now 98 bona fide members
of the club out of a possible 100 and for
the two remaining vacancies there are
tw.ntv-nine applications already on
file.
The membership roll contains the
names of men in all walks of life from
bankers to doctors and from real es
tale men to United States consuls. The
secretary was astonished by the num
ber of people eager to join the club and
and he found it far easier to obtain the
requisite number of members than he
had anticipated. This is inn a measure
accounted for by the fact that the
Santa Maria club Is the only Ideal or
ganization of its kind in the city and
has the most desirable spot for hunt
ing in this part of the country.
The list of members is as follows:
