A NEW SMELTER.
The Copper Bell company at Tur-
quoise. Ariz. will immediately com-
mence the erection of a fifty-ton smel-
A RICH COUNTRY.
A Blsbee paper says that within a
radius of eighty miles of Tucson there
is the greatest number of the richest
mineral deposits to be found In any
eaual area in any state or territory
of the United States.
ANOTHER NEW PLANT.
The Copper Hill company which has
mines about forty miles from Tucson
have developed a large district and a
new plant 13 being installed. This
property with the plant in connection
will be one of the leading copper in
dustries of the territory.
NEW COPPER PROPERTY.
iiin Unlman si Perkins who have
opened up a new copper property ad-
joining the old yueen mine iu mo i -nal
district of Arizona have a car of
high grade ore on the dump ready to
ship. They have already shipped a few
cars and made money on them.
ALGODONES SMELTER.
The smelter company at Algodones
in the Sandia mountains of New Mex-
ico has commenced work on their new
200-ton smelter. The completion of
this smelter will make a great conven-
ience to the miners of the Sandia dis-
trct. SANDIAS OPENING UP.
'. So many properties are being opened
up and the shipments have become so
frequent from the Sandia mountains
that the attention of outsiders is being
attracted. A large number of Colo-
rado mining men are in that district
trying to get hold of some of the prop-
erties. THE COPPER QUEEN.
Phelps-Dodge & Company's Copper
Queen Mine at Bisbee seems to be
rightly named. This property is pro-
ducing 500 tons of rich copper ore
daly. The plants of the company
are converting it into copper matte
for shipment east. Over 1600 men are
employed at this property In the
FINE CYANIDE MILL.
The Mammoth Gold Mining company
having mines located about fifty miles
from Tucson have a seventy stamp
mill at their Mammoth mine with
which they have a wire tramway and
at their Mohawk mine thy have a
thirty 8 tamp mill. Their plant for the
cyanide process is said to be one of the
very finest and they have a most suc-
cessful property in their Mammoth
mine.
ANOTHER BREAK DOWN.
Another break down occurrred in the
Ray mill In the Pinal district of Ari-
zona last Saturday but it has been re-
paired and the mill is running again.
There is ore enough on the dump at
the mill to keepe it running while the
new machinery which is to be added
is being installed. It is probable that
the mill will be kept running till all
the ore on the dump is worked. The
output of the Ray mine is 300 tons per
day.
A GOOD PAYER.
Burt Dunlap. of Wilcox. Ariz. is de
veloping a good mining property in the
Dragoon mountains not far from Co
chise station. The ore from this mine
carries lead silver and copper and
yields handsome smelter returns. He
has - already shipped mree car loads
and they have brought him a good
profit. He has now In sight ten more
car loads of good rock with develop
ment work constantly pushing ahead
and discovering a large amount more
of the same character and quality.
A COMING PROPERTY.
Fourteen miles southeast of Wil
cox. Ariz.. Is a fne copper property
which is fairly well developed in pre-
liminary work. It is the Don Cabez-
as. A ten fot body of 25 per cent cop
per and a sixty foot body of 3 per
cent copper constitute the discoveries
in this property at present and it is
thought that these are stringers of the
main body for which a tunnel is now
being driven. The tunnel is 7x5 feet
and has been carted in 740 feet. A
lower tuunnel cuts in at the 275 foot
level but the workings are not yet un
der the apex where it is expected the
large body is. Altogether 1720 feet of
development work .as beeen done. In
the long tunnel three shifts of men
are working with Rand drills.
A GREAT PLACER CAMP.
Old miners declare Cape Nome to be
the most wonderful placer camp ever
discovered. Fabulous stories are told
of the riches found in the sand of the
beach and in the gulches and creeks
thereabout. One miner named Lind-
bloom. who returned to Seattle a few
days ago. cleared up $100000 during
the present season and has refused
$800000 in cash for his holding. A
single nugget worth $150 was taken
from one of his claims recently. An-
other man from Sioux City la. has
brought down to Seattle with him $8.-
000 n dust taken from a space forty-
five feet square on Cape Nome beach.
The storekeepers at Anvil City are said
to have refused to accept any more dust
as their vaults and safes are full.
WANTS OF THE MINER.
He wants a "false set" of teeth for
the "mouth of the tunnel." and a girl
of experience to paint and powder the
"face of the drift."
He wants a fore-in-hand tie for the
"collar of the shaft." and a boot for the

When seen by a Herald reporter Sel-
lock was asked what ' he had to say
about the charge against him.
"There Is really no charge against
me. I was caught in the act. It was
on the night of June 19th and a crowd
of us got out and got drunk. I left
the boys about 1:30 o'clock in the
morning and when passing the post-
office I broke a window and crawled
in. I did not get anything and as I
came out the night policeman arrested
me. I have been in Jail In Roswell ever
since and as they have no United States
court there they are taking me to So-

throw myself on the mercy of the
court.''

Carroll Case.'
The Carroll case is attracting more
attention as the evidence in going in
and when the defendant was placed
on the stand this morning it was plain
to be seen that he keenly felt that be
was on the stand for his life.
He is very nervous and could not
keep still a second. When on cross ex-
amination J. M. Dean asked him point
blank "Didn't you fire the shot that
killed Newton Stewart?" Carroll look-
ed at his attorney and with a forced
laugh said "No" but it was evident
that the question hit him hard and for
some time he would not look at the
jury nor at the district attorney.
It is generally conceded that the case
against Carroll is the strongest made
against any of the soldiers and many
believe today that he will be given the
verdict of hanging.
At the time of going to press the
attorneys were arguing the case and it
will go to the Jury late this afternoon.

T. N. Cousen. the contractor who
built the club house at Lake Santa Ma-

to Casas Grandes this morning.
He says the club house Is complete
and now ready to receive the sports-
men. A good road has been built from the
railroad to the lake and many other
small Improvements made.

MADE HER ILL.
Could Not Stand Harsh Criticisms of
: Her Book.
Hallie Erminie Rives the beautiful
young southern authoress is seriously
ill at her stuido in Fifth avenue. It
may be necessary to move her to a
sanitarium. She is suffering from
nervous prostration caused by the ad-
: verse criticism of her book. "A Fur-
nace of Earth."
Not since "The Quick of the Dead."
by her cousin Amelia Rives now the
Princess Troubetskoy has a book been
handled so sharply by the critics.
J Two months ago Miss Rives arrived
j from Europe where she was the guest
'of Mrs. James Brown Potter There she
was hailed as a new type of southerner.
Her Virginia cousin is of more robust
proportions but Miss Rives who comes
from the blue grass regions of Ken-
Itucky. is wan and willowy. She has a
complexion paler than the magnolia
and a mass of red hair.
Miss Rives occupies the studio for-
Thompson. the animal painter. It Is
luxuriously fitted. There are tiger
skins and other jungle effects scat-
tered about. There was a nurse In
attendance last night. Strict orders
were given that the invalid must see
no one.
Miss Rives's attack was hastened it
said by a condemnation of her book
by Father MacMahon. director of the
Cathedral library who not only or-
dered the book stricken from the rolls
of the institution but issued a man-
date forbidding all Catholics to read
It.
