PAT 6AQRETT
Wrlttt'n Up Ien7th By m
The Denver Times publishes a three
column story of the career of Pat (lar-
rett. sheriff of Dona Ana county
who it says is about to retire from
public life.
The article is illustrated by the pic
ture of a young; dude wearing a stand
ing collar and fedora bat which is la
belled "plucky Pat Garrett.
Garrett's great virtue as a sheriff
says the story lies in the fact that he
"draws the qulcKest bead in the South-
west." He Is the quietest softest-
speaking man in the territory and
the deadliest shot. When he was young
and his manner of handling a gun was
not yet known he was tenderly . tak-
en aside by afriendly desperado (who
was not "wanted" at the moment) and
advised to resign and escape to Texas
where peace and quiet reigned at least
at intervals.
"This country is too warm for the
like o" yon." urged the desperado "and
you'll not last through the summer."
"Thanks." drawled Pat Garrett.
can stand considerable beat an I
guess I'll stay."
Pat Garrett has his own peculiar
method of handling a gun. admirably
suited to a country where when you
need a gun. you need it quick. It is
a simple method according to an ad
miring friend who says:
"Pat's the most sudden man with
a six-shooter that you ever saw. He
can pull his gun quicker ii a fly will
move when ye take a swat at it. He
never takes aim when he shoots. He
doesn't waste valuable time that way
He jutt shoots and his bullets go
where he wants them to."
Garrett gave the first demonstration
of his skill with the pistol for the lien
eflt of a western gentleman indulging
In a little western saloon merriment
The gentleman one Greenfelt. with a
weakness for other men's torses was
amusing himself in a saloon making
a couple of men dance by shooting at
their feet. A third whose terpsichor-
ean skill or bash fulness had met the
disapproval of the horse thief lay on
the floor with abulletinconveniently
concealed in his person when Pat Gar
rett casually dropped In.
"Three hands round." whooped the
horse thief shifting his pistol to
ward Garrett and almost on the last
word he lunged forward on his face
with a bullet through his heart. The
last sound he heard in thin world
was Garrett's drawling comment:
"You're a poor caller."
Pat Garrett further convinced the
border folk that be was at home in
their "warm" country by interrupting
the flight of three Mexican bandits at
I .as Tablas. While on their trail they
ambushed him. He dropped behind
his horse and while they were pop-
ping away at him he shot from un
der the animal and picked them off
losing his horse in the battle.
BROTHERHOOD OFST. ANDREW
Holds Annuil Election Of Of dears
and Public Meeting.
The brotherhood of St. Andrew of
St. Clement's church held its annual
election of officers last night yesterday
being St. Andrews' day. The following
were elected:
Director. William M. Driscoll; vice
director. Charles Rokahr; secretary
and treasurer. Dr. J. F. Edgar.
A public meeting in the church fol
lowed the election and after a brief
service Messrs. F. S. Jones and Bert M.
G. Milliams were admitted to member-
ship in the brotherhood.
Addresses were made by T. Si. flrls-
coll. Charles Kokahr. Dr. .1. F. Edgar.
11. M. G. Williams. H. R. BufTham and
the rector. Rev. M. Cabell Martin.
The brotherhood of St. Andrew has
been in existence seventeen years hav-
ing been started in 18SX The date of
the etiarter issued to St. Clement's
Chapter No. 441 is May 1. 1890. The
following as to the object of the broth-
erhood is taken from the handbook.
"The sole object of the brotherhood of
St Andrew Is the spread of Christ's
kingdom among young men. It was
formed in recognition of the fact that
every Christian man. Is pledged to de
vote his life to the extension of the
kingdom of Christ on earth. It is com
pulsed of young men who are under
stood to have acknowledged the re-
sponsibility as resting upon themselves
and who are ready to strike like St.
Andrew to bring their brothers to the
knowledge of eJsus Christ. Personal
allegiance to him: loyalty to his king-
dom: a conviction of individual re-
sponsibilty and the spirit of Christian
fraternity. These are the fundamental
principles on which the brotherhood

Y4QUIS SAVE AMERICAWS

A special to the Globe-Democrat
from Phoenix. November 28. says:
Private advices today from Guaymas.
sate of Sinaloa. Mex.. says four Amer-
icans at a settlement 180 miles south
of there near Tora. were imprisoned
on a charge of killing a Mexican and
that only fear of Yaqui Indians who
threatened the Mexicans if the Amer-
icans were molested prevented the ex-
ecution of the prisoners. A large gang
of Mexicans are at work there on a
dredge together with five Americans
and several hundred Yaquis. peaceful
members of the tribe now warring on
the Mexican troops.
The Mexicans resented the atten-
tion of the Americans to several na-
tive women in the camp and frequent
quarrels ensued. Ten days ago one
American. Wells engaged In a fight
with Ramon foreman of the gangs.
On the next day a derrick fell on Ra-
mon killing him Instantly. Wells
and another American were in charge
of the derrick and the Mexicans be-
came fttriofcs. claiming the Americans
had planned Ramon's death. The lat-
ter protested that the killing was ac-
cidental but they and two others were
thrust into Jail. The fifth man. Dav-
idson escaped.
That night the Mexicans drank heav-
ily and resolved to shoot the two
Americans who were in charge of the
derrick that killed Ramon. The Yaqui
workmen who had been befriended by
the Americans heard of the plans and
decided to protect the Americans. They
surrounded the jail and guarded it all
night.
Several shots were fired but the
Yaquis were in such numbers that the
Mexicans feared to attack them.
Meantime Davidson made his way
to the plantation of an influential
Spaniard and. accompanied by him.
returned in the morning to the camp.
After much persuasion the Mexicans
released the Americans on condition
that they leave the vicinity at once.

A CURIOUS CASE
IT IS SAID THAT A MA1LRIDER
HELD UP THREE TRAVELERS
And Then Reported After Killing
One and Wounding Another.Tbat
He Had Been Attacked By High-
waymen. It appears that the table has turned
on the Mexican mail rider who claimed
that three men attempted to rob him
near Corralitos station on the Sierra
Madre road last week.
The account of the affai.v was pub-
lished in The Herald at the time and
as the information was gathered here
it would appear tnat the three rene-
gades attacked the mail rider and he
killed one and wounded another. When
the mail rider and the wounded man
were taken to Casas G ramies a sen-
sation was created in court by a decla-
ration from the wounded man to the
effect that he and his companions were
not molesting the mail man when he
drew his gun and ordered them to hold
up their hands. Instead of obeying
they attempted to escape and he shot
at - them killing one. wounding an-
other and the third escaping. The
court took his testimony and imme-
diately ordered an investigaUon.
A party went out from Casas Gran-
des to search over the ground where
the conflict was pulled off and .there
they found that none of the three men
were armed. This bore out the wound
ed man's statement in part and they
