> Sam Rayburn at
Dallas Banquet
Sam Rayburn of Bonham,
speaker of the National House
of Representatives, was honored
by fellow Texans at an appre-
ciation dinner in Dallas Tues-
day night.
The banquet was the largest
ever assembled in Dallas. At-
tendance totaled 1,500, an-
nounced Toastmaster R. L.
Thornton.
Outranked only by the Presi-
dent and Vice-President in his
^pwer and responsibility at
Washington, Rayburn's record of
public service, starting with his
election to the Texas Legisla-
ture at the age of 24, was re-
viewed and praised by speak-
ers at the dinner.
Speakers frequently referred
to Rayburn as presidential tim-
ber, and he was placed in line
for the backing of Texas Demo-
crats for the presidential nom-
ination in 1944.

j While 93 per cent of the cot-
ton farmers in the 19 cotton -
! nroduring states of the nation
were voting in favor of quotas,
| in Texas the majority was 88
per cent with 225 out of the
234 cotton-<?rowin<r counties
i having reported. Out of a to-
tal vote in the state of 152.922.
| unofficial returns showed 134.506
i in favor of quotas, 18.336 oppos-
ed. Election committees chal-
lenged the eligibility of 80 vot-
ers. The final tabulation was
expected to show a total vote
of about 155.000 with the per-
centage unchanged.
In last year's referendum, the
total vote in Texas was 169,859,
with 139,205 favoring quotas, a
majority of 82 per cent.
The outcome of the refer-
endum was interpreted by E.
N. Holmgreen, administrative
officer in charge of the AAA
in Texas, as an indication of
the satisfaction of the farm-
ers with the AAA program.
Mexican Artist
Sketches Publisher
FRED I. MASSENGILL
The above is a true likeness
of Fred I. Massengill, veteran
editor of the Terrell Tribune.
This picture was made by an
artist at the Reynosa banquet
tendered to the members of the
Texas Editorial Association at
their recent meeting in the Rio
Grande Valley. The Mexican
artist at the request of Editor
Harry P. Hornby of Uvalde,
drew this picture of Massengill.
Hornby told him the price
should be low because there
was so little to work on. The
picture was so good that E. B.
Neiswanger, who was seated
by Hornby at the banquet,
said he would be glad to have
a plate made and copies fur-
nished to the visiting editors.
